Wait a minute I'm just reading that in Daichi's first appearance he was else is to be Takao's cousin from his mother's side (their mothers are sisters)

Why did they get rid of that??? that was perfect and their relationship is such cousin culture! it's so surreal to know my headcanon was the original canon.

That was for the game only. When Daichi appeared in the manga and later anime, he was unrelated to Takao probably because it’s odd that Takao’s mother having a sister was never mentioned. Plus in the manga Max’s and Daichi’s parents are good friends and Daichi’s mother would likely have mentioned her sister at some point, which in turn makes Max never hearing of Takao prior to meeting him kinda strange

Then the anime had Daichi take on Takao because he was world champion, and that ties in to Takao’s arc in G-Rev much better, since if this kid can challenge him, how is he supposed to defend his title against Kai, Rei, or Max.Plus, with Daichi being a kid that just showed up one day, it makes their relationship better, since Takao has to learn to work with people other than his former teammates

Really Daichi and Takao being unrelated gives us two things. First, it avoids continuity errors. And second, it improves Takao’s arc in G-Rev

The way I interpreted it was that Takao and Daichi’s mothers might have not been on good terms with each other/distance was a factor that lead to a break down in communication something like that.

With Daichi’s father passing it may have made her realise that Daichi needs to meet his other family members so she tells him about his cousin and then he realises that his cousin is the world champion, the same person he needs to defeat.

Also I believe Daichi and Max’s mothers were only friends in the newest Manga for the original series I don’t think it was part of the original manga.

One of the things I really liked in the manga was how protective Takao was of his mom’s flowers. So I imagine he would pay attention when it comes to that (to everyone’s shock). :p
