On Twitter there are currently a lot of Christians and Muslims getting really angry about ways that Jews work around restrictions on work during Shabbat, and, like, honestly I do not understand why they care? Just a lot of non-Jews telling Haredim they’re doing their religion wrong for no reason.

Attention all gentiles who are for some reason getting mad about something that literally has nothing to do with you: it’s a little known fact that every Shabbat-safe innovation was personally approved by Hashem. We asked him and he said they’re all kosher, as it were

Anyone who gets mad about this doesn't understand something much bigger, which is the real underlying point: Shabbat creates an island in time - a sort of alternate world wherein we rest specifically from acts of creation. Humans having been made in the Divine Image tend to create extremely naturally and sometimes that creation is easier for us than refraining from creating. But the point is to appreciate the world as it is, to rest from our usual labors and to focus on our communities, our davening, and our appreciation of the world as it is.

The things we do to avoid creating on Shabbat in order to preserve the holiness of Shabbat while also keeping it a reasonably restful and comfortable day are very much in the spirit of Shabbat. It's a day of rest for creation, but we are also allowed to find ways to make it pleasant, joyful, and restful for our bodies as well as our souls.

I can't speak for Islam of course, but I do know that the very premise of Shabbat goes against Protestant ideas of work ethic and so I would guess that's at least part of the culture clash. Shabbat is about as anti-capitalist as you can get, and so people who have grind culture embedded in their religion are naturally going to balk at something that both (a) has such strict rules against work, and (b) also has "loopholes" to ease the unpleasantly stringent aspects of the day and therefore not even have good 'ol suffering to offset the pleasure of a day of total rest.

[Source: was raised in a protestant household that was very Calvinist in this particular regard. 🙄 Learning to appreciate Shabbat has taken a lot of retraining of my basic instincts because of this]

Anyways maybe they should read The Sabbath by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and maybe they'll calm down.

in light of so much sorrow and some of the betrayals happening, let us remember this energy: if anyone tries to make you sacrifice your authenticity or relinquish your Jewish spirit, if anyone makes you feel like you have to hide, then it’s not a fair or nurturing space or relationship for you, and you don’t have to bend to those demands. so many of our ancestors had no choice but to change their names, outwardly assimilate their culture and selves to survive. we can honor them by not having to, by holding pride and love for them, our community, and ourselves. your Jewish identity is beautiful.

Had to unfollow this one person on here cause they just would not stop making posts about how transfems on e getting periods is just made up symptoms and like, I don't have definitive proof I only have my and others experience but like how do you, as someone who is not on e, who has access to the same amount of studies looking into this with decent sample sizes as I do (none), feel so confident to say it's all just placebo and made up ? What makes you so confident ? Cause I gotta say after almost two years of nearly right on the dot once a month suddenly feeling nausea all week, taking the most unbelievable shits, feeling all my organs cramp, and having mood swings out the ass which always just so happens to line up with when the two people with uteruses in my house also get their periods, I feel like I have more data to work off of than you do

Karpov had cemented his position as the world's best player and world champion by the time Garry Kasparov arrived on the scene. In their first match, the World Chess Championship 1984 in Moscow, the first player to win six games would win the match. Karpov built a 4–0 lead after nine games. The next 17 games were drawn, setting a record for world title matches, and it took Karpov until game 27 to gain his fifth win. In game 31, Karpov had a winning position but failed to take advantage and settled for a draw. He lost the next game, after which 14 more draws ensued. Karpov held a solidly winning position in Game 41, but again blundered and had to settle for a draw. After Kasparov won games 47 and 48, FIDE President Florencio Campomanes unilaterally terminated the match, citing the players' health. Karpov is said to have lost 10 kg over the course of the match. The match had lasted an unprecedented five months, with five wins for Karpov, three for Kasparov, and 40 draws.

okay, yeah this is pretty funny

(…) [Trudy] didn’t like Anne Frank. At first I couldn’t absorb the sentiment, couldn’t really believe my ears. It was like hearing a Catholic say she wasn’t fond of the Virgin Mary, that she was sick of all her tiresome bragging. Virgin birth – big deal. But then I realized that Trudy’s distaste for Anne Frank the person – whatever girlhood tiff set it off – returned the Holocaust to where it belongs, in prosaic human history. It’s not a myth, or a sacred narrative, with demigods and martyrs and supernatural heroines. It’s not a biblical story, a tragic moment pointing to redemption. It’s a story of girls and boys, Annes and Trudys, and their brothers and sisters and parents, murdered and tortured the way humans have murdered and tortured since time immemorial.
But the next day, at lunch, I discovered that Trudy’s Anne Frank induced scowl wasn’t merely personal (it was mostly personal).  “Of course, she was a mean girl – like you see today in the movies, yes?” Trudy said.  “A mean girl. That was Anne. But that wasn’t really her fault. It was her father, you see, who spoiled her, and, well, never mind, I’ve said too much. But to me, what became insufferable was her optimism. ‘I know in my heart that people are good.’ That was from her diary, yes? People are good? Do you think she believed that in Bergen-Belsen?”
I’m not sure she realized it — she didn’t follow Jewish intellectual arguments — but Trudy had stumbled onto one of the key controversies surrounding Anne Frank’s diary: its supposed optimism. It was actually the hit Broadway play that highlighted Anne’s line about the essential goodness of the human heart; both the play and the movie end with the quote. The diary itself includes the line, but also Anne’s observation that the world would be better off without any people. Critics of the play, including Cynthia Ozick in an influential Commentary piece where she half-wishes the diary had never been found, accuse the playwrights and their supporters of using the diary – and therefore the Shoah – to promote an anti-Zionist, anodyne universalism that negates Jewish national concerns.
But Trudy wasn’t responding to the diary’s politics, or to the political uses others made of the book or the play or the movie. She was just pissed off at Anne Frank because, in her opinion, Anne got it wrong: People aren’t basically good. For Trudy, the Shoah was never a rhetorical weapon or a political tool – it wasn’t up for grabs to the loudest shouter. It was her personal story. To me, it felt like Trudy longed for Anne to have survived, just so that Trudy could have told her off, survivor to survivor, person to person.
I cried a little the day Trudy’s daughter emailed me that her mother had died; she was a friend, and I will always miss her. But a deeper gloom hit me the next day, when I realized that as the last of the survivors pass away, the Holocaust is truly up for grabs. Without the grounding of Trudy and her contemporaries, we’re free to hurl the term “kapo” at whoever doesn’t share our politics, free to spin the Auschwitz narrative whichever way suits our ideology, free to twist and bend and stretch the Shoah so that it speaks to whatever issue is on our mind. Trudy is gone, so there’s no one to shame us into stopping.

This is genuinely one of the most well-written things I’ve ever read about Anne Frank and the universalization and dehumanization of the Holocaust and its victims.

I like this, because I also find her annoying, but like, she’s a child. I very much like the point about the Holocaust not being a story of heroes and martyrs but about real people, and real people are allowed to be annoying. I think of all the times I’ve seen Anne Frank’s name or photo — the one where she looks like she’s superhumanly sweet and innocent — used to make some kind of point about some ongoing political tiff by people who don’t care about Jews at all, and it’s like you can tell that they see her as a symbol, some object they are free to take and use however they want, rather than a real person who existed and suffered and was kind of a brat but also deserved to have lived in peace. Because as soon as any Jew does something those people don’t like, they’re “one of the bad ones” and suddenly they don’t care if they’re thrown under the bus. Like oh, we’ll put pictures of Anne Frank on our posters at the Womens March and compare Trump to Hitler and tear our shirts appropriately in public but we’re not gonna defend people calling Gal Gadot a baby-murdering kike because she’s Israeli so that’s ok. Or Jared Kushner is a bad person so it’s ok to say he’s a lizard person who controls the strings of the world, who cares if that trope hurts more Jews than just him. If they ever thought of Anne Frank as a typical spoiled preteen who was sometimes selfish and sometimes insecure and sometimes a jerk then they would write her off, too, but there’s no danger of that because they will never see her as a real, flawed person. To that kind of person, Jews are just ideal victims for their political metaphors, but the thought of having to think about Jews existing in front of them is just distasteful for them. The victims of the Holocaust weren’t martyrs; they didn’t ask for it or volunteer, and no good came out of it, nothing was preserved because of it, they were murdered. But if you think of them as saintly martyrs, it makes it easier to distance yourself from the horrors of the Holocaust and to freeze these people in this idealised capsule where they can be used however you want.

If Anne Frank were still alive, people would hate her. There would be as much normalized online hate and smears against a living Anne Frank as there were against Elie Wiesel for the last 20 years. It’s like when wingnuts hold up Martin Luther King as the good black guy to be contrasted with all the ones they see as troublemakers today. The most famous and well-liked Jews are Jesus and Anne Frank, and for the same reason.

LGBT activists have been vocal about intersex issues for several decades, because establishing the legal right to bodily autonomy for intersex persons is basically inseparable from establishing the right of trans persons to that same legal autonomy over their own bodies. many intersex persons prefer not to be grouped together with LGBT causes; however, the vast majority of LGBT activists would agree that performing “corrective” surgery on intersex infants - to force them to adhere to a largely fictional gender binary - is pretty fucking evil.

There’s a lot of bullshit around the gender binary and the “basic biology” arguement that breaks down the second you look in any college-level textbook. The amount of people born intersex clocks in at 1.7% of the world’s population and people try to pretend it doesn’t exist because of that low percentage. However, following that logic, they must also believe that people born with naturally red hair, 2% of the world’s population, must also be fictitious. Except that clearly isn’t the case. One hundred and thirty-two MILLION people are born intersex and the vast majority of them have their bodily autonomy ripped away. That shit has to stop.

(There are just as many intersex people who very much do “prefer to be grouped with LGBTQ+ causes,” btw. Our bodies and lives exist at an intersection of queerphobia and ableism. A lot of people push very hard to try to have us decide whether we’re one or the other.)

Antisemitism Required Reading

I get a lot of ignorant comments & tags on my posts about antisemitism, and I’ve already spent way too much time & energy engaging with them. So to preserve my sanity, I’ve made the decision not to engage too deeply with any commenters who haven’t at least read all of these in their entirety:

If you’re not Jewish, please read all of this literature before adding anything to my posts about antisemitism.

Jews, please add any books you think should be on the list!

List updated!

really recommend getting a partner with a different religion than you and very little knowledge of your religion because the opportunities for explaining things to each other are just exquisite

yesterday she told me some story about the Buddha's wife and child and I was like. Wait. He fucked? And she was like yeah of course he fucked, why wouldn't he, he was the most attractive and loveable and and wise and etc. person who ever lived. why would he not fuck.

this morning she looked perplexed in the kitchen at me and said "did Jesus not fuck?"
