Bunan Studies Orlesian: Name Compilation

5/28/2023: This was drafted years ago, and I will update it as I read Tevinter Nights if there are new Orlesian names to include. I wanted to get this out of drafts though.

Disclaimer: The language origins of many of these names can be up for debate, given how some can be a part of one nation with a name from another or (vice versa) can have a name from the nation in question but be affiliated with another. In addition, some of these names have no hint as to the origin of name but are affiliated with a particular nation.

These are basically just French names (Old French according to the RPG Rulebook).

BehindTheName.com and its surname sister site are used to find real-world equivalents of these names, otherwise other sources are linked. Translations are done from my own memory (I studied French for eight years and minored in it in college) and double-checked on Google Translate and WordReference.com.

I’ve felt this since the beginning of the new year but haven’t really taken the time to reflect in words. This year seems to be so much about revisiting paths I previously thought closed off, particularly interests and hobbies I used to have. I organized a bunch of scrambled sheet music I had and felt that burn to play piano and my other instruments again. I find myself wanting to sketch and draw again (and the practice is sorely needed if my sketches are any indication). I want to journal my dreams again. (I’ve been having some weird ones since I could COVID for the first time this year for whatever reason.) Even just using this website again which I used to frequent for hours years ago.

It’s refreshing in a way. I’m constantly hustling, trying to do my best to help others while chasing after every little dream I have and saving money. I’m glad I feel exhausted at the thought of how I was in the past with my time strictly regimented and scheduled in a planner. An hour to write. An hour to practice music. An hour to do sewing projects. As usual, some projects and hobbies of mine unintentionally fall by the wayside as I focus my energy elsewhere. As I get older (I have to update my age on my Tumblr bio, btw), I have even less of that now. It feels good to actually relax and let myself take naps and play more video games and read books. It feels good not to hustle so hard. I won’t say there isn’t a nagging little voice in the back of my head snapping incessantly at me going “Time is money, time is money...” But it feels so good to just rest and enjoy little things.

At a big recital I performed at, I had to miss my last dance bc I got sick out of nowhere and spent two days throwing up and having to go to urgent care to get relief. Since I had to take a couple days off and it’s the end of the school year, I’m trying to catch up on work and keep making mistakes that I should know not to make in the process, and I feel anxious everytime my boss reaches out to tell me to fix something. Whatever bug I had has made me so tired and hungry that I feel like my brain fog is even worse, and I feel down and upset with myself for not being at my best and feeling like I need approval for every move I make at work.

Kaz: *asking Jesper to participate in his new plan after Jesper moved to manor with Wylan*

Jesper from the sofa: I am too tired, sorry

Kaz: You are literally unemployed, and now you are doing nothing

Jesper: I am a trophy husband. It is a serious and important full-time job. Do you know how exhausting it is to look amazing all the time? Today I spent 6 hours trying on my new clothes!

i'm going to say this because other disabled people deserve some warning, and it sure as hell wasn't given by any prerelease or review media i saw:

the new zelda game, 'tears of the kingdom' has a major trigger for medical abuse body horror front and centre from the very beginning, all throughout the game

at the very start of the game, link is injured, and then wakes up to be told that he has had someone else's dead arm grafted onto him, without consultation or consent, as a "necessity" to "save his life"

there is so much ableist subtext i could draw out from this, but importantly, if you have any triggers with forced or unwanted medical procedures done on you, go in prepared and bracing yourself

it's not a prosthesis, or gauntlets, or magitech infusion, it is literally textually a dead arm transplant done while unconscious, and the game's gaze lingers on and highlights it and its difference from his body constantly

i don't know how this was considered acceptable in a family friendly franchise, other than the sheer ignorance of the developers about disabled peoples' medical experiences

speaking of which, since i know i'm opening myself up to shit by even mentioning this is an issue, if you have to wonder why this is a trigger especially for disabled people and why i'm treating it with such gravity:

horrifying medical procedures done on us without consent that we're only told about after waking up is unfortunately routine for people with disabilities of many kinds

and forceful transplantation of an unwanted (or even unviable) limb against patient consent is absolutely a real world thing doctors actually do in the name of making a person "whole" and "fixed" and because disability is abhorrent to them. it's not a fictional or fantastical scenario, and i know this because it was done to me, and it was living hell that i will never recover from.

so if you want to argue about it with me or tell me "well actually it's ghost magic", or tell me about your headcanons, or be in denial about the horrors forced on us that you don't want to believe are real.... fucking don't.

already getting a lot of hate from people that don't seem to understand the very basic fact that real people who go outside and touch grass can still get their real medical trauma triggered by fictional depictions....

For the record, this is not a case of "check the box next time." The rating of the game and the little black and white box that tells you the contents does not mention anything about medical trauma or abuse. Here's a screencap from the ESRB website.

https://www.esrb.org/blog/what-parents-need-to-know-about-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom/#:~:text=The%20Legend%20of%20Zelda%3A%20Tears%20of%20the%20Kingdom%20is%20rated,or%20make%20in%2Dgame%20purchases.

This should have been listed, either under "medical trauma" or "medical abuse" somewhere in the warnings but it wasn't.

Sometimes trauma doesn't care that what you're looking at is pixels. My 40 hour a week day job and the fact that I refuse to stop touching grass (I hate being indoors) didn't really do much to stop an episode of House MD from giving me a severe traumatic flashback.

Game companies please tag your shit. You had room in the rating box, that little bit of extra ink would not affect your bottom line I promise you.

“If this hurts my shows I’m gonna riot” “they better not cancel my favorite show” “this is so selfish I NEED this show” “what about my mental health now that they—“

So you agree. Show-writers are important to you and to the industry and should be compensated accordingly for their important work.
