The real problem with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl getting tropified is that it's so strongly rooted in being a uncomfortable caricature of that one autistic girl you knew in high school that when people who actually are autistic write autobiography they get accused of Manic Pixie Dream Girling themselves.
I don't think it's just a matter of people taking the term out of its original context, either. Sure, that's part of it, but the thing you've gotta recognise is that the media archetype that the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" was created to criticise has always been a caricature of neurodivergent women. The criticisms that coined the term never seemed to fully recognise that, and often conflated female characters being invented to facilitate a male character's emotional arc and female characters being depicted as neurodivergent like those were the same thing. That poison has been there right from day one – popular culture getting hold of the term just made it worse.
