Acipenser sturio, known colloquially as either the European sea sturgeon or common sturgeon, was once an abundant species that flourished all along Europeβs coastlines (save for the Baltic regions, which have their own dominant sturgeon species). Today, this fish averages around 4 feet in length, though this average is reflective of strain on the species and would have been larger in antiquity. This lady is on the classic sturgeon diet β worms and crustaceans! She locates these tasty morsels with her highly sensitive, whisker-like barbels. European sea sturgeon have brownish-grey backs and paler, yellow underbellies. Overfishing for caviar, habitat loss, and commercial bycatch have placed the European sea sturgeon on the IUCN Red List as critically endangered. It is estimated that there are less than 800 mature adults in the wild today. Conservation efforts are underway, however! From 2012 to 2015, 87 captive-bred European Sea sturgeon were released into the Rhine.
