Hello and welcome! 🌸 Call me Robin. Currently on summer break! Making little dudes, writing The Strange Redemption of Thaddeus Thawne, and becoming more of a human and less of a feral cat. ALWAYS sobbing about androids, clones, monsters, and other little guys. Ceramics sideblog at @robinsceramics! 💌

If I had a nickel for every time someone told me they thought I was writing an epic novel to be published years from now only to find out that it’s actually a fanfiction and you can read it any time you want, I would have two nickels. Which is not a lot, but hey, it makes me think that I should mention it! It’s free to read any time on tumblr or archive of our own.

this pinned post now comes with a clones explanation!

I love that the books are called The Murderbot Diaries. Not the Murderbot Journals or Records or Logs or anything else that might sound serious or scientific or professional. No, these are diaries, purely intended for writing love letters about your friends and/or furious complaints about your friends and petty rants about your job and capslock yelling about your shows. This is for FEELINGS, not necessarily for facts. That distinction is very important to me.

I’ve never thought about this that much but you're SO right. I think it's definitely kind of a play on other media that's called The X Diaries, because usually that's a lot more light and fluffy, you know? (Personally I associate it with like, middle grade realistic fiction. I think I knew of or read several series that were styled as someone’s diary in elementary/middle school.) If you throw ‘Murderbot' into that framework it doesn't match, and makes you think “oh? what's a murderbot and why does it keep a diary??” Taking the sci-fi killer robot and put it in an almost cutesy sounding title formula subverts expectations. I had forgotten this, but I remember finding the series title funny when I first heard it, because of those subverted expectations, and I think that’s the idea that Wells (or whoever came up with it) was going for. It actually does a really good job of capturing the vibes of the books imo. It’s telling you right up front: this killer robot main character is going to be telling you about all its feelings, of which it has many.

…hmm. You know what else makes a diary different from a journal or a log? A diary is private. Secret, even. You put a cheap little lock on it or hide it in a shoebox under your bed. That really is the perfect word for what TMBD is, isn't it? The place where murderbot writes down all of the thoughts and emotions that it has to (or feels it has to) keep secret. (I’m having a bit of an emotion about this now.)

Does doing art feel too hard? Can't bring yourself to start even though you want to?

Lower your standards

And more importantly, Lower your expectations

Just start it. You can just put down some colors, or just sketch, or just do lineart. It doesn't have to be more than this. Even starting is enough. Don't think about all the work you need to put into it. Don't set unnecessary expectations for your art.

If you get some sketches going but decide to do something else, that's perfectly okay. If you get to coloring but leave it halfway, that's perfectly okay. There's also no wrong way to start an artwork. And don't second guess what to draw first, because you can draw whatever you want and you can always draw other things some other time. You can start on an idea and abandon it, or move onto the next idea. You can always come back to unfinished artworks. But you don't have to do that either. An unfinished work isn't a failure. It's just a memory

If you want to draw, just draw. It doesn't need to be more than that

actually, you know what. let's do a quick psa, because i periodically see people who write fanony/batfam fluff fic ask if the girls should be around at this point, and the answer is almost always YES:

  • helena (huntress) and steph (spoiler) show up very soon after tim becomes robin. they both remain on the outside of the bat dynamics for a long time, but strictly speaking they predate the formation of the 90s/modern "batfam".
  • (here is where you would put knightfall -- bane breaking bruce's back and the saga of azbats -- as well as dick's first, brief stint as batman, if you chose to.)
  • the 90s batfam begins to crystallize: babs works with bruce and tim, dick works with babs, dick bonds with tim, dick moves to bludhaven. helena has an uneasy relationship with bruce but bonds with tim and, to a lesser extent, dick.
  • (here is where you would put no man's land -- the catastrophic earthquake.)
  • cass (batgirl ii) shows up during the catastrophic earthquake. she bonds with bruce and, later, babs and becomes part of the general family dynamic.
  • afterward: the birds of prey form, around a babs/dinah/helena core. steph dates tim and forms a bond with cass. here is where you would put her brief stint as robin and her death, as well as jack drake's death (war games; identity crisis).
  • jason only shows up after all of this. his initial confrontations with bruce (utrh) and tim (titans tower) occur very soon after steph's death.
  • kate debuts as batwoman after jason's return but before damian's arrival. (in post-crisis she is not related to bruce, and remains on the outside of the batfam.)
  • there's another gap of time before damian arrives. shortly afterwards, bruce apparently "dies." dick becomes batman, damian becomes robin, steph becomes batgirl, so on and so forth.

tl;dr: steph (and helena) show up well before cass, who shows up well before jason, who shows up well before damian.

Pearl and Shawn!

Ahhh, interesting characters! You've picked the two clowns who are perhaps least biologically human out of my whole double armful of characters. You'll appreciate Pearl's interesting body situation, I think, and Shawn's whole wonderful rodeo thing.

Here is the premise of the world for anyone who doesn't know about it! Basically, when a human clown entertainer dies, a whole new being (whose personality and appearance is based on the human's clown persona) pops into existence as a fully-formed adult Clown. This clown has full language skills, but no memories and no possessions.
