Brin's Convenience

@brinconvenient / brinconvenient.tumblr.com

I'm Brin. I'm bigender. I own and operate bigender.net. I have thinks and feels and I like to share them here and on twitter. I'm also the lady behind advice blog Ask Mama Brin For the record - I know the sideblogs post is a bad post - I messed up. She/her/hers pronouns.

I feel like, regarding the recent shit with the laws in FL, this is a really important time to say y'all should be for the whores and the hookers too, because y'all did not say shit when SESTA/FOSTA was goin on, y'all kept quiet when new banking laws rolled out that specifically targeted sex workers (from FSSWers to cam workers to strippers to professional pornstars) and I need y'all to understand that a straight line can be drawn between the censorship/deplatforming of sex workers and what is happening regarding legislation against trans people now. mainstream leftist orgs and individuals scrambled to distance themselves from sex workers and sex worker organizations and catch it! that's now biting y'all in the ass

“anti-trafficking” “anti-sexual exploitation” “child safety” are all euphemisms for pushing censorship and criminalization of sex education, LGBTQ+ ID and existence, abortion, anything right wingers deem unsavory; it is so easy to deplatform something by calling it "pornographic" or "exploitation" and if you give a fuck about liberation for all that needs to include the decriminalization of sex work because we (queer non-white SWers) were the TRIAL RUN; now trans people are the next step and after that it's going to be other LGBTQ+ people, and best believe that will also eventually include POC, LGBT+ or not.

you can understand the timeline of the deplatforming of sex workers by reading this thread by the amazing Ashley Lake. because believe that this is the same playbook that will be used, is being used, on other people the GOP deems "undesirable" (like trans people)

this is ok to rb btw bc as someone whose sex work is keeping my lights on and funding the MAJORITY of Decepticon Disaster Relief/Kaon City Medics rn I'm fucking tired of beating this drum, I'm the first to rock with ANYONE else who needs help but y'all don't like the yucky whores and hoes and hookers when we're the ones who need help even though our liberation is INTRICATELY entwined with y'all's so get with it

babytrans is like your starter class and you can prestige into stuff like tmilf, transbian chaser, girlfag, femboy♀️[Editor's Note: DO NOT CONFUSE WITH FEMBOY♂️ OR FEMMEBOY], etc. the gourmet genders we don't let the cis know about. you can even multiclass but you have to make sure your class alignment restrictions are in agreement or you risk becoming a Fallen Paladin (Fallen Paladin is also a gender)

Transphobia: grift, baby, grift!

Well, it’s five in the morning and I’m having a one-on-one with W. L. Weller….well, his Special Reserve, at least. You know how sometimes in wine lies truth? Sometimes it also means articulating something right below the surface, and this is not groundbreaking thought. I am a lot of things; a groundbreaking thinker isn’t one of them, unless you wanna hear my ideas about the Third Amendment, and…

"useless gay" jokes are OUT this energy is IN

I mean, this is literally how I live my life.

Anything that doesn’t naturally occur was designed and made by a person. A person who learned how to do that. If they learned how to do it, there’s a better than even chance that I can ALSO learn how to do that. So until I prove otherwise, I’m going to assume that I can do it.  This results in far more successes than failures, and the failures also teach me more than I lose.

i fucking love humanity and space. thinking abt.. thinking about the perseverence rover, lovingly nicknamed "percy" and the family portrait it has on it of the former rovers sent to mars 😭

how we sent an ounce of clyde tombaugh's ashes aboard the new horizons space probe so he could visit the "planet" he discovered.

the pioneer plaques

AND the golden record on the voyagers

us screaming out to space hoping desperately to not be alone, that we are HERE HERE WE ARE THIS IS WHAT WE LOOK LIKE.

astronauts turning into artists after their time in space,,, ooughghg

One thing hilarious about the pioneer plaque is there was controversy about the design, specifically over one small little line. A line to represent the vagina on the woman. This was seen as too lewd and pornographic. They ended up removing it for the final design.

EXCUSE ME?! PERSEVERANCE CARRIES A FAMILY FUCKING PORTRAIT AROUND MARS?!

I hope I never forget this till the day I die

Am I willing to let solidarity with people actually cost me something?

Would I fight for a cause that doesn’t benefit me, or may even result in me losing privilege?

Do I even know what that privilege actually looks like, in my every day life?

damn

Do it anyway.

THISSSSSS!!!🗣🗣🗣
And, yes, do it anyway!!!🤷🏾‍♀️💋

Remember y'all, white is not a race, it's a concept used to other anyone considered not white. Italians, polish people, Jewish people, all were at one point, and still are in many cases considered non white. Dismantling whiteness is not a personal attack on you, it's an attack on the societal mechanisms of white privilege and the othering of "undesirables"

How to Save Your Own Life, Erica Jong

  1. Renounce useless guilt.

  3. Live in the Now (or at least the Soon).
  4. Always do the things you fear the most; courage is an acquired taste, like caviar.

"Trust all joy" is fucking me up right now. God damn this is good.

i think the worst thing to come out of this site are the ‘NAZIS ARE TERRIBLE. they WILL KILL ALL JEWS in COLD BLOOD, LET THEIR FAMILIES DIE IN FRONT OF THEM, and start the HOLOCAUST 2.0!! also reblog to make a jew feel safe.’ formatted type posts

ways to make a jew feel safe and comfortable:

-let them celebrate their holidays openly around you and encourage them to express themselves religiously. if they invite you over for a holiday, go!! they’re making an effort to let you learn more about them.

-consider any different diets they might be on (ex. kosher or even if it’s passover) when you have them over at your house. a little goes a long way with this one

-if christmas is around חנוכה that year, feel free to send them a חנוכה card!! it’s not really as big of a holiday for us but we do appreciate the effort put into making us feel included :)

-educate any of your friends that might make antisemitic jokes. even ‘grammar nazi’ jokes. standing up for jewish people goes further than when theyre just around. antisemitism isnt something that only exists when a jew is in the room.

-understand that, if they practice judaism, their beliefs arent like yours, and that that’s ok! a lot of people forget that not everyone is either a christian or an atheist whenever the topic of religion comes up. (but also remember not every jew practices or believes in judaism!!)

-if they tell you to warn them before you talk about nazis, do it. It’s really easy just to give someone a heads up before you talk about people who want them dead, especially if they’re openly jewish or a holocaust survivor descendent.

ways NOT to make a jew feel safe and comfortable:

“NAZIS are EVIL. they will KILL ALL THE JEWS. that’s just BAD. they will MURDER EVERY SINGLE JEWISH FAMILY. NO JEW IS SAFE. anyway reblog to make a jewish person feel safe and loved 🤗”

also if you can goyim reblog. and if you’re jewish and want to add on feel free!

hey by ‘if you are a goy reblog if you can’ i meant ‘i highly encourage you to reblog this because i have seen too many posts that make me and other jewish people very uncomfortable and they are, to be honest, entirely surface level and exhausting to see over and over again. not only that, but they are also annoying to us because they dont make us feel safe at all, and reblogging posts about how bad nazis are isnt actual activism or showing real, substantial support for jews. if youre serious about being there for your jewish siblings actually take part in their lives. make sure they’re comfortable. make sure you make casual antisemitists uncomfortable. dont just reblog posts about hating nazis, your posts dont do shit. supporting your jewish friends by even doing something as simple as what i listed above does have an affect of us. your posts about you hating nazis mean absolutely nothing unless you care for and acknowledge Actual Jewish People’s problems and challenges. otherwise, they’re surface level bullshit and do not contribute whatsoever to improve our safety.’ :) :) :)

A mark on your forehead identifies the god you must worship to stay alive, usually by joining its local church or temple. Your mark is unknown, meaning an old, forgotten god sponsored you. To survive, you must either find an old temple to worship at, or do the arduous task of building a new one

Nobody in your small coastal village has ever seen the Godmark that you were born with. It’s a dark russet sequence of criss-crossing lines, with a vertical arrowhead on the left and a circle on the right, just over where your brow meets your temple. Some of the traders who come down from the mountain say it looks like one of the scripts used in the hinterlands, but not a language that any of them recognize.

“If she’s got the temperament for it, she should try her luck inland,” they advise. “No point her starting a temple here if she’d find her people elsewhere, with a little searching.”

At first, your parents are reluctant to send you away. Though you’re well-behaved and diligent in your chores, you’re a sickly child with no God to worship. And besides, you’ve always been the dreamy type–inclined to lose track of time watching the path of rain droplets chasing down the window, or the fronds of an anemone as it sways in a rock pool.

Instead, they send you to the temple of the Storm to learn all you’ll need for your own God. You are happy there, for a time: making up beds and serving food to the castaways who pass through, keeping vigil at the lighthouse, burning incense and praying with the loyal widows and orphans of the drowned.

One such widow, an old, old lady, touches the mark on your forehead. “I recognise those letters. We wrote this way in the town where I grew up, way off past the mountains.”

Your heartbeat quickens. “What does it say!?”

She squints, eyes engulfed by wrinkles and hidden behind smudged glass. “A… Ar… Oh, I can’t remember how to speak it. I left before I learnt my letters properly. There was a war, you know. But I remember,” she says, mistily, “the most beautiful pink and white flowers used to grow, on the borders of the wheat fields…”

You try to ask more questions, but remembering the war distresses her, and so you speak of other things. When she’s drifted off to sleep, you get to your feet, go home and tell your parents: you are leaving in search of your God.

If someone is allowed to compete, they should be allowed the chance to win.

These stories only happen when a trans athlete gets 1st place. They never run stories when they place 45th--which Tiffany has done.

I think all any athlete wants is fair competition.

They don't want to be matched up with someone they could never ever beat.

Despite the wish for people in sports to be competitively matched, there have always been outliers. People with such amazing athletic ability they can rarely be touched. And as far as my research has shown, all of those outliers have been cisgender.

People like Michael Phelps, Serena Williams, Babe Ruth, Mike Tyson, Shohei Ohtani, Usain Bolt, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, etc. They all have various biological advantages that helped them dominate their sports. Yet people do not try to ban them from playing--rather they praise their genetic luck.

Biological advantages like extreme height, insane lung capacity, giant wingspan, and whatever speed force Usain Bolt is tapped into... these advantages pop up all the time for cis athletes.

I have yet to see a trans athlete completely dominate in the way some of these outliers have done. And I don't know of any transgender athletes that have not lost to their cisgender competitors at some point.

I could only find two people who came close to outlier status with decent winning streaks. Fallon Fox did win 5 of 6 fights, but that is such a small sample size I'm not sure she could be considered an outlier. And Laurel Hubbard did win a bunch of Olympic gold medals in weightlifting, but she was only ranked 7th in the IWF's +87 kg division previous to that. Which makes me think she just put in the work and earned those gold medals through grit and determination. An Olympic story we've seen many times with cis athletes.

So you have one or maybe two trans athletes that did well above average for a short period of time.

And that means "the end of women's sports is nigh"?

The fact that no trans athlete has consistently dominated any sport as of yet, and that they are routinely beaten by their cisgender competitors, makes me think trans athletes have held up to the standard of challenging yet fair competition.

The very thing spectators and athletes crave.

I’m reading this book at the moment, and did you know that shepherds had their own counting system in parts of Northern England, Wales and the Scottish Borders?

“… let’s start with a little known, deliciously quirky, remnant called the 'shepherds' score', or Yan Tan Tethera. It’s an ancient way of counting, still used by some shepherds today, in northern England, Wales, parts of the southwest and lowland Scotland. The system is vigesimal, or base-20. It stops at twenty - once a shepherd had counted to this number, he’d mark it in some way (a notch on his crook, perhaps, or a stick placed in the ground) and then start again at one.
Linguistically, its origins are lost, but some scholars believe it may have its roots in Brittonic (or Brythonic) languages, those early versions of Welsh, Cornish and Breton spoken during the Iron Age. Individual words vary slightly from region to region, but they all share remarkable similarities. The Lincolnshire version goes like this:
Yan (1), Tan (2), Tethera (3), Pethera (4), Pimp (5), Sethera (6), Lethera (7), Hovera (8), Covera (9), Dik (10), Yan-a-dik (11), Tan-a-dik (12), Tethera-dik (13), Pethera-dik (14), Bumfit (15), Yan-a-bumfit (16), Tan-a-bumfit (17), Tethera-bumfit (18), Pethera-bumfit (19), Figgot (20).
The numbers above ten use a combination of smaller digits - so eleven is Yan-a-dik (one and ten) - it's brilliant in its simplicity and rhythmic bounce when spoken aloud.”

^ I referenced yan tan tethera just now so here’s a bit more about it. Bear in mind that a sheep counting language is inherently soporific, so do make sure that you’re in a good spot for a nap before practicing.

@thebibliosphere is this the old counting method Granny Aching uses in The Wee Free Men?

Yep!

@elodieunderglass
a sheep counting language is inherently soporific, so do make sure that you’re in a good spot for a nap before practicing.

It does have a rhythm and mellowness when read aloud... Is this where the advice to count sheep when struggling to fall asleep comes from?  Has it never worked for me because I was foolishly counting in English rather than a variant of Celtic shepherd/ess counting cant?
