You know the old saying, you don’t get to choose your parents? The truth is, you don’t really get to choose your kids either. If I could, I’d choose you, mijo.

On My Block Season 3

“You know, the worst part about growing up without a father is having to be a father to a brother without ever being a son.”

Don’t mind me just crying on the crowded subway watching Oscar tell his dad how hurt he still is having to raise himself, alone.

*Spoilers (I guess)*

I think for me what makes them killing off Oscar hurt so much is that he was promised a good life by fast forwarding 2 years into the future. This shit isn’t supposed to happen 2 years into the future. Shit like this is suppose to happen right after all the dirt was done. Right after the body is buried and him getting jumped out and taking a beating for him and Caesar so that Caesar would be protected.

But instead you give him two years out of the life where he finds love, gets a job doing what he loves and about to open his own business, having a daughter on the way, and finally convincing his brother to leave Freeridge and move with him to Portland and then you take it all away from him. He deserved to have all those things, but if the writers didn’t want to give him all those things the one thing he definitely deserved was to at least get to see his daughter come into this world. Couldn’t be at least have that?

He deserved the world and so much better than he got.

First Wes Gibbins in How to Get Away with Murder and now Oscar Diaz in On My Block. This horrible trope of building a character to their best life and then killing them off at the height of their happiness has got to end. It's not shocking, it's not clever, it's not entertaining. It's just plain cruel. Spooky could've died a member of the gang he fought so hard to get out of if he had to be killed. He didn't have to get jumped out, fall in love, get clean, get married, build a life and plan a career in another city just to get gunned down right after he finally convinced his brother to start over with him. Just typing it pissed me off.

What's crazy is no one even expected Spooky to work that hard to change his life. It was such a welcome surprise in the s3 finale to see in the flash forward that he had changed and was genuinely happy. And in the midst of all of the kid's drama the writers decided to toss all of that development into the fucking grave and leave his pregnant wife widowed and his unborn daughter fatherless. And for what? Drama points!? Shock value!? Who the fuck knows. All I know is that it was such a disappointing development that I hardly enjoyed the rest of the season, which is sad bc those young actors are really, really good.

I'm glad On My Block got to wrap and I wish the young cast the best in their careers. But the death of Oscar "Spooky" Diaz practically ruined that entire season and that is no exaggeration

Cesar repeatedly crying not my brother just really reminded me that he’s just a kid. That every stupid decision he made, all the bad things he did was because he’s just a stupid kid that still needs his older brother to help him.

And that Oscar was probably younger than Cesar is now, when he became responsible for raising his brother just makes my heart hurt for him. He was so villainized in the first season because he was the reason Cesar would have to join the Santos but everything Oscar did in his life was for his brother. He made a lot of mistakes because he was also just a stupid kid but he was never allowed to just be a kid. He tried so hard to make Cesar better than him and he did such a good job with what little they had. Then finding out that Oscar got Cesar jumped out too, even after his death he was still taking care of Cesar. He would have been an excellent father because he had already been such a good one to Cesar.

I’m just heartbroken for how his story ended. He deserved more.

I don’t understand how with these dumb ass decisions he keeps making Cesar is still alive. Natural selection should’ve taken him out a LONG time ago
