weird little brain tweak/reframing that helped me out. i Often find that advice that seemingly helps Everyone Else doesn’t make any sense to me, in ways that are hard to describe, and it can be really frustrating. but when i find a way to explain it to myself that finally seems to break through and make it click, it feels really good

there are some autistic “traits” that people find really annoying but that are inherently kind

like overexplaining. a lot of autistic people didn’t have certain things explained to them because “everyone knows that.” so when an autistic person overexplains something it’s not because they think you’re stupid it’s because they know how it feels for someone to assume you know something you don’t and just not ever explain how or why. it’s a kindness. autistic people aren’t annoying or stupid for this. they’re kind.

pratchett wrote a lot of fat women in his books and like 95% of them are admirable and inspirational characters who are very loved by the people around them but its the scene in the fifth elephant thats like "hey growing up as a Big Girl is really hard and theyre taught to make themselves smaller and endure countless indignities and their only option to avoid ridicule is to be unbelievably nice to their tormentors and sometimes that doesnt even work. dont you ever want to go apeshit. like dont you ever want to fucking lose it look sybil has a iron bar and shes so mad shes gonna knock out a werewolf and grab another one by the neck for never exchanging christmas cards" for me

if you’ve never read Terry Pratchett ... consider

My therapist: just because you made a plan doesn’t mean you’ll always follow it perfectly, and that’s okay. It’s better to follow a plan cursorily than not at all.

Me, sobbing: THAT WAS AN OPTION???

Oh, this is super important.

When trying new coping strategies or learning a new habit, you’ll fail. Possibly many many times.

But that’s alright! No one just PICKS it up immediately.

You’re trying to learn to do it sometimes, and then occasionally, and then more often than not, and finally every time!

Similarly, you might fail in any plan or timetable you’re trying to use.

But that’s alright!

As OP’s therapist said, it doesn’t have to be perfect! In fact, no one can pick it up immediately.

Doing things OCCASIONALLY is better than not doing it at all.

Doing things LATE is better than not doing it at all.

Doing things PARTIALLY is better than not doing it at all.

Also don’t aim for perfection. Just aim for as best you can, ideally a little better than last time. But? There will be ups and downs. That isn’t a flaw in you or your techniques, it’s just how people work.

Indeed.

Let me also post OP’s tags cause it had another good point.

Writers, it's okay:

  • to be proud of your own writing
  • to write something self-indulgent
  • to celebrate your achievements
  • to have a bad day of writing
  • to hype up your own writing
  • to be kind to your characters once in a while. ok? it's ok

Addendum: it is also okay...

  • to write and publish something that isn't perfect
  • to make mistakes
  • to receive criticism and incorporate it for the future
  • to ignore criticism
  • to get excited about your own work
  • to grow out of things as a writer
  • to save some stories for yourself
  • to write the thing
  • to not write the thing
  • to be gentle with yourself
  • to be honest with yourself - about the bad but also about the good (there's probably more right than wrong with your story)
  • to like your own work

Add it on in the reblog, kids!

"be not afraid"

  • demanding
  • you have no right to control another person's feelings
  • does not provide a productive alternative

"when you hide behind that rock I feel as though you don't appreciate the fact that I came all this way to deliver the word of god"

  • statement of fact
  • not pushy
  • opens conversation to productive compromise
  • emotionally aware

the biblically accurate angels Facebook group I'm in will get a hoot out of this

Said Facebook group is apparently actually a thing, and called “ah, yes, the Biblically accurate angels.”

starting a phrase with "be" is holy syntax, "be" bestows power on the words which follow it =P
