Kintsugi: the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold-infused lacquer. The practice adheres to the philosophy of treating breakage and repair as natural parts of an object’s history, rather than incidents whose evidence is to be concealed (x) Repaired Heart, Kintsugi Study #4) and Kintsugi Study #2 by TJ Volonis
New Yorkers would grow to love Concorde like no one else. As soon as they started flying passengers at supersonic speeds in January 1976, it became the goal of Air France and British Airways to quickly establish what would purportedly be a lucrative service into JFK Airport in New York City. To much fanfare, Concordes from both airlines arrived at JFK for the first time nearly simultaneously on April 19, 1977. Concorde 210 G-BOAD had the most flight time of any Concorde with 23,297 hours and 25 minutes. After 8406 takeoffs and landings and 7010 supersonic cycles, she made her final flight into JFK on November 10, 2003, then was transported to the Intrepid Museum in New York City where she now rests on a pier between the Hudson River and 12th Avenue. This airframe is the perfect ship to display here because she made the fastest Atlantic crossing by any airliner, from Heathrow to JFK in 2 hours, 52 minutes and 29 seconds, wheels up to wheels down.
Make Sail !
Hoist Sail! or Make Sail! or Set Sail! This a single command for the following: “Let Go the Halyard, Sheets, and Braces. Slacken Braces and Sheets. Haul Halyard. Sheet Home the Sail. Make All.” If the sail is furled, the sail is first unfurled by releasing the furling gaskets. The brace and sheet lines are then rigged to their appropriate cleats. Note that if the sail was properly furled, the sail can be unfurled by spilling all of the furling gaskets, then unwinding them from about the sail. The furling gaskets should not be removed from the yard.
Sheet Home! Haul both sheet lines until the sail is taut and the flat. Used when first setting sail and sometimes before lowering sail. This is the same as “Let Go the Sheets! Haul the Sheets! Make the Sheets!” The correct amount of tension will depend on the force of the wind. In general, the sheets should be taut enough to keep the sail from fluttering, but not so taught as to pull it too far aback.
I dig this James Bond console-pops-out-of-the-coffee-table setup.
PDP-8 ASCII Art Photo Booth – David Gesswein - VCF East XVIII
People really liked this one, which hasn't been seen for a few years. This PDP-8/E was setup to take portraits using a vidicon tube camera in black and white, which would then be digitized slowly (as fast as the PDP-8/E can go), line by line vertically. The image is then available either as an ASCII art printout on a large chain drive line printer, or in tricolor separation, which could then be emailed to you after the show. I went for the monochrome portrait printout. The PDP-8/E in question was having some difficulties on the first day, and needed to be debugged at the show before it was ready to run, but once it was running again, it was a hit!
Am heutigen Tag der Schreibmaschine zeigen wir euch in dieser Galerie einge besonderen Schätze aus unserer Sammlung! On today’s Typewriter Day, we show you some special treasures from our collection in this gallery! In the GDR, typewriters were in short supply, so many people waited a long time for them. The most famous brands in the GDR were »Erika« and »Robotron«, which produced both for the office and for private use. Which do you find the most beautiful? 🤓

This is the third movement of the Concerto n.8 for Violin and Strings in B minor. The first movement had been published on April 29.
- As always, for better listening I suggest the use of headphones
- It would be nice if the "Like" symbol became visible only at the end of a listening…

Repository: A Typological Guide to America’s Ephemeral Nuclear Infrastructure by Elizabeth Ellsworth & Jamie Kruse In the absence of a permanent facility for the disposal of nuclear waste, ephemeral and mobile storage structures have been built throughout the United States. These structures exist to temporarily isolate and contain nuclear materials until more enduring facilities can be constructed. Our research contributes to the development of a visual typological guide to this provisional and largely unknown nuclear infrastructure. We consider structures designed to temporarily contain nuclear waste, such as dry casks, cooling pools and storage tanks, and mobile infrastructures designed to transport waste between sites. Presently, humans have virtually no models for how to design and maintain infrastructures capable of safely containing nuclear materials for the millions of years necessary. We aim to address this overlooked topic directly and communicate it to diverse audiences through an aesthetic, accessible work.
