most recent update in "brian plays video games sometimes"...finally got around to playing OMORI, and I loved it instantly; like, we're talking "reminded me why i fell in love with JRPGs, invoked memories of playing Mario RPG and earthbound for the first time" sort of stuff

absolutely incredible work from all involved

just finished "what remains of edith finch" for the first time

these walking simulator games can be a bit of a mixed bag; I like 'em for the most part, but sometimes they seem to fall a bit short...this one, though, I thoroughly enjoyed!

great atmosphere, great story, very touching at points...I can see why this one resonated with so many people...I'm probably going to be thinking about it for a while myself

I was a bit wary of it before starting, because I heard a lot of people decry that there wasn't much gameplay to speak of, but, like, you know what? Call me crazy, but that didn't really bother me much; it was certainly interactive enough for me to justify being put in a video game format

It was just a great time all around...if there's any Neil Gaiman fans out there that haven't played this yet, I'm sure you'll get a lot out of it

So, in yet another example of "Brian doesn't try things for at least 5 years", i finally sat down and played "Stardew Valley" for a few hours, which is strange because some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around playing Harvest Moon 64 and Back to Nature...Stardew Valley isn't "influenced" by Harvest Moon, it IS Harvest Moon...like, it plays identical; it's nuts one guy made this

I think the main reason I put off playing this so much is because I knew I'd probably love it right away and I didn't want to get sucked in...fancy that; just had to force myself to close Steam

Because I've been thinking about it all damn day, here's some more stuff I liked about Night in the Woods:

  1. The soundtrack is incredible; not since I played Undertale for the first time did I find a soundtrack to a newer game that resonated with me this much
  2. The fact that it's essentially 2 games in one; Bea's storyline is heartbreaking and reaffirming in the best possible way, and Gregg, well, need I say it? I will anyway: GREGG RULZ OK
  3. Platforming elements? In MY adventure game? I like it!
  4. I'll be honest, the art style kind of turned me off for a second, but as soon as I read somewhere it was based on Richard Scarry, everything sort of clicked
  5. The sheer amount of side quests and NPCs and other non essential stuff there is to do in this game; it's a really impressive length for a game of this genre
  6. I loved all of the dream sequences? I know some people could take them or leave them, but man, they were some of the more striking parts of the game for me
  7. All of the main characters are great and really likeable; nuanced in a way you don't see in video games too often, either

I don't know, you guys...overall, the hype is real; I don't know what I was doing in 2017 or why it took me so damn long to play this

This past month has done a LOT toward reminding me why I love the adventure game genre as much as I do
