fireflies lighting up a rural Pennsylvania field at dusk

As a european i sometimes forget furefkied are actually real and not american folklore/cryptids. Like you’ve got friendly little bugs that glow in the dark….. b r uh

in case europeans were worried: we love them very much! even tho they’re clumsy and slow and sometimes bump into you, no one swats fireflies here, or takes them for granted. even grownups sometimes reach out in the summer and gently catch a firefly for a minute before letting it go.

By “reach out” that’s meant quite literally–you just kinda. Stick your hand in their flight path and they land on you and will sit on your hand for a bit. Sometimes if you’re just walking or standing outside while they’re active you have to shoo them off you because they’ll just. Sit on you.

They’re harmless and very pretty and it’s always a treat to see because they’re out for a relatively short time each year.

Seeing people shoot raptors in other countries is fucking wild to me because we have a whole system of super strict laws governing how you can handle an individual FEATHER off of an eagle, and it doesn't have to even be a dead eagle. One can molt and you can find it on the ground and if you're caught with it the warden will fuck your entire life. What do you mean people are out there shooting them to protect a fucking pheasant. A pheasant??? That thing I have to avoid running over approximately 459 times any time I leave a major highway???

My good friend @prismaticate has asked a very good question here, and while I’m not entirely sure I’m qualified to explain it and would love some input from more qualified sources, my SUPER simplified understanding of why the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and its numerous modern revisions and addendums have clauses about this included is this:

-It’s basically impossible to tell a feather that’s been picked up off the ground from one that’s been taken from a poached bird

-This used to be a MAJOR problem when bird-feather hats and the like were in high demand back in the day, because several bird species on the edge of extinction kept getting poached in spite of the new laws protecting them since people would just say they “found” any feathers from protected species used in the stuff they were selling, and you couldn’t prove otherwise unless you literally caught them in the act of poaching

-This eventually got SO bad that they had to just make it illegal to have the feathers at all, with certain exceptions made for members of different indigenous groups, or authorized organizations that display them as part of efforts to educate the public about the species they belong to

@zooophagous is this a reasonable rundown? Was there anything I missed/any better sources you might recommend to learn more about this? I know it’s probably far more nuanced than that, but this was kind of the explanation I’d always seen floating around. 😅

That's pretty much the gist of it! Eagles and eagle feathers have more laws on top of that because of their sacred uses in certain indigenous practices, how they relate to legal falconry, and because eagles at one time were highly endangered while at the same time being a national symbol. Where a cop or a game warden may shrug and look the other way if you, say, illegally picked up a chickadee feather from your bird feeder, if they see a real eagle feather they will notice and will be VERY interested in where it came from.

Not long ago here someone was arrested and charged for violating these laws because they tried to sell a plains feather bonnet at a pawn shop, claiming they had "found it while exploring an abandoned house."

The clerk suspected it was real eagle, the warden confirmed it was, and because those feathers are so tightly tracked they were able to locate the family of the previous owners who said the item had been stolen some time ago.

If nobody knows you have it, obviously you can get away with it. But if they see it, or God forbid you try to SELL it, the hammer will fall.

Avatar

Im surprised every time people think it's a crazy sounding law, it is genuinely one of the only things preventing a lot of native birds from extinction or any asshole could kill as many as they want and just say they found them on the ground

Wait, poaching wasn’t about the meat, it was about the feathers?

The collapse of bird populations in the USA in the late 1800s thru early 1900s was very much about feathers.

At its peak the feather trade had feathers that were worth more than gold. Commercial hunters would shoot birds out of the sky and sell feathers by the pound, in literal huge crates. Egrets were especially sought after for their beautiful breeding plumage, which was used in fancy hats and accessories. This wrought havoc on the poor birds because they only ever had this plumage during breeding season, so not only were the breeding birds dying, they were leaving next generation's chicks and eggs behind to die of neglect.

Beyond hats, the gentleman's art of fly tying was also a popular art form, more for the sake of showing off one's rare collection of feathers and art than for actual fishing.

There was some meat hunting as well before the banning of commercial hunting, mostly ducks and geese, which also drifted close to extinction as they were taken to be sold in markets.

Even white tailed deer, the ubiquitous animal that's found all over north America in truly ridiculous numbers, came dangerously low. But meat wasn't where the money was when it came to birds. It was feathers.

The Lacey act banned commercial hunting in the United States, putting an end to the constant unregulated commercial killing to fill market stalls with meat (which incidentally is why you don't see venison in most supermarkets in the states. Only farmed deer is legally allowed to be sold.)

And the Migratory Bird Treaty Act made it a crime to not only kill a bird, but to even posess a single feather from one. Most people won't buy a hat that would get them arrested if they wore it outside, so the market for feathers was gutted.

Even though feather hats aren't popular in this day and age, nobody is in a hurry to amend these laws, as birds in general are well loved and popular animals and still very much threatened by other stressors such as pollution and habitat loss.

So, in the off chance you find one, what....do you do with a feather? Leave it? Report it to local authorities?

You take a picture of your cool find and leave it on the ground

My ideal street layout, wide sidewalk, wide bike lanes, and a 2 lane road that only allows streetcars on it. Yes I know this a bad drawing, I made it in a hurry

Avatar

Are those (black circles w/ small things) supposed to be eg cafe chairs?

If so, they’re posing an accessibility issue due to blocking the sidewalks. Recommend your street layout allow for outdoor seating without blocking sidewalks.

Agreed. The foundation is sound, but there needs to be plenty of space to walk by seating without getting run over by a bike. Seating that hugs the walls of the nearby structure, and open storefronts that let people and services flow seamlessly between the commercial spaces and the sidewalks would be an improvement here.

I actually shrunk the seating to make there be more space for pedestrians

If the tracked area is for trams/streetcars only, may I recommend that you make it green track?

Not only does it add much needed greenery to public spaces, but it also reduces heat at street level, reduces the running noise of trams and dramatically improves water drainage at street level. It even goes as far as reducing the damage to the tracks caused by the material expanding and buckling in high heat by simply keeping the rails cooler and better displacing heat.

It doesn't even have to be grass! Different species of plant, local species or hardier, low-maintenance species can be used, and furthermore, it tends to reduce maintenance costs of the tracks, as soil is easier to dig up than concrete or tarmac, and so the tracks can be accessed and worked on easier.

Obviously, if you want the street to be able to accept buses along with trams/streetcars, or other rubber-tyred vehicles, then a hard surface is necessary, but if it's light rail only, then green track gets my vote.

Already made the edit, I hope you enjoy the green tracks and their flowers. This image is very green

Redoing the color of the bike path to make the street less fucking green

Avatar

I love the idea of green tracks, but in this case they are not a good choice:

You still need the possibility for rubber based vehicles like Fire Cars or Ambulances to pass the streets.

You can't just put them on tracks because they need to be as mobile as possible to allow maximum efficency.

Okay removing the grass due to firecodes

Urbanism pride flag lol

we still need green so maybe put flowerpots in the middle of the sidewalk? Like rectangular ones that only take up maybe a fifth of the sidewalk width, and their intermittent, maybe one between every other set of trees.

The street planters have come in

Honestly if you want some good green space you should consider bioswales between the bike facilities and the "street", which would help replace some of the lost drainage/filtration function from de-greening the track

The bios have been swaled

@puddlebrigade Okay the tables have been moved and reduced to be more accessible and some planters have been moved

@professionalchaoticdumbass Green is back in fashion

The large dark green dots are trees

Is it too soon for this?

Yes, you aren’t even on the current version

You know the parable about how the foolish man built his house upon sand and the wise man built his house upon rock and it’s always about having a sturdy foundation well there is also the fact of location which is that the sand probably used to be rock except it’s been eroded to sediment because it’s a FUCKING FLOODPLAIN

I feel like a dumbass, but @rapidashmascot just revolutionised my understanding of that parable.

My family quotes that parable loudly every time another planned housing community on a former floodplain gets inundated with water.

I'd like to add to this post that this is the exact thing that happened today in the Río de la Plata and Delta areas of Argentina and Uruguay. Huge floods hitting capital cities.

Please help us. Just being informed helps. This is the consequence of climate change in the Global South, and colonialist exploitation.

Some links to help however you can:

Please help by tagging any big blogs you know support environmental movements and tragedy relief in the global south 💛 We're a bit desperate here

white people please just purchase native artwork and jewelry from native people i keep seeing idiot white people be like “waaah i wish i could support native creators but its cultural appropriation” girl why would beaders sell you their earrings then. just dont get a medicine wheel or a thunderbird then like damn it is that easy

If Native folks are making it to sell to white people with the approval of their tribe, it’s not “appropriation”–its support and appreciation! So yes, buy that native-made dream catcher, but not the mass produced fakes made by white people. Like, you can go to a pow wow and buy native crafts there, too.

This semester in college we’ve been working with a company in an indigenous museum to help their sales

They work with native artists in all of Brazil, so the site is in portuguese

Buying from indigenous artists is not appropriation!

i hate how you get desensitized to the cool stuff in your WIP if you've been writing it for a long time so when you read back over it you're like "this isn't as cool as i thought :(" but it still is! you just read it too many times

Gotta recirculate this post periodically just cuz

Just don't read the post too many times.

Oh god oh fuck

"Isn't it weird that [thing humans commonly eat] is poisonous to literally every domesticated animal" I mean, there's a pretty good chance that [thing humans commonly eat] is at least mildly poisonous to humans, too. One of our quirks as a species is that we think our food is bland if it doesn't have enough poison in it.

Humans have a really weird mix of mundane superpowers.

We're not fast and don't have a lot of natural weaponry but we're bizarrely tolerant to a broad range of toxins to the point that one toxin is considered a morning necessity for some to perform at work. Gotta love us.

im gonna keep wearing make up and your bitchy little "im so much better and cooler than other girls" post isnt gonna stop me <3.

Hi. You’re getting defensive about something you perceive as a personal attack and it’s blinding your critical thinking. If you skim the tags for half a second you’ll see dozens of people talking about how they feel a deep encompassing shame if they go anywhere without wearing makeup. I think it’s bad that people have been conditioned to be embarrassed of their own face. I never got into makeup, but when I was in high school I made the decision to delete Snapchat forever because it got to the point where my stomach would drop every time my face went from Filtered Face to my own face.

It’s good and healthy to develop your self esteem enough to feel comfortable around other people in public without makeup. it takes 2 seconds to look and see that’s clearly not the case for so many people. I have nothing but empathy and respect for the people who are aware they have a problem and are scared of the amounts of work they have to do to get past it.

And Odds are, people who have a healthy relationship with makeup are not people who get so ruffled by a post that states “some people are addicted to makeup” that they send anons calling someone a bitch. I think it’s worth it to consider and sit with why you had such a knee jerk reaction to an innocuous statement. Wish you nothing but the best and a good day to boot.

For real, I haven't worn makeup since high school and never wore it outside of specific events and parties, and I'm so glad I never let it be a habitual thing.

In some ways, it's like smoking, you don't want to even start because you can't "just stop."

Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare.

the reason it’s rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can’t get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. so if you see a plant as big as the one in the picture that doesn’t have any green in its leaves, it’s getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighboring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant’s photosynthesis.

albino plants are basically vampires.

For a long time, scientists thought they were parasites, and couldn’t figure out why the bigger plants didn’t release chemicals to kill them.

Turns out, the lil’ ghost redwoods benefit their hosts by filtering toxins and acting as a sort of backup immune system.

They’re vampires, and they’re commensal, symbiotic mutualists!

this is super cool! I had no idea

This is among the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Avatar

we’ve already discovered forests where trees share nutrients with young or disadvantaged trees and forests where trees can ask their neighbors for some extra food (they literally send a signal requesting aid, via the web of fungus that connects their roots) and forests where surrounding tees will keep a tree alive even when it has been reduced to a stump through some tragedy…

so, while i love the playfulness of “vampire” and i commend the specificity of “commensal, symbiotic mutualists” i think it’s worth considering, at this point, if “member of the community” might not be at least as apt

There are numerous species of plants that have just evolved to not have chlorophyll because they yoink nutrients from fungi or other plants. It’s pretty neat!

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Just had a dream that a novel exists which is written from the POV of an old man dying in the 1920s in the form of diary entries and bit by bit it's revealed it's actually a closeted trans woman who was out during her youth and forced to recloset and now I desperately want to read it

The narrator was like, referring to a girl called Sarah in all the writings, and at the start it's super unclear who Sarah actually is and it's speculated by the people around that she may be a lover from the narrator's youth, until it's noted that Sarah had heterochromia and that's the defining trait of the narrator

Oh also Sarah did actually have a lover. They were T4T and lived in a little cottage by a lake until he was drowned in it and Sarah couldn't make ends meet anymore and had to recloset

Okay a bunch of people have told me to write the thing now so I've decided if this post gets 30K I'm turning the thing into an epistolary novel.

the whole "every piece of media is abt love" nonsense falls into a category of lacking media anaylsis that i like to call "escapism theorying". people will often attribute themes like love or escapism to a work if it has themes that make them uncomfortable or challenge them – and, in an ironic twist, use the idea of love or escapism as a universal theme to avoid thinking about those other, more challenging themes. often times you'll get a super surface level reading of a work that skyrockets in online popularity because of this sort of thing and it lends to this extremely watered down textureless analysis

"it's either about love or the absense of love" is so silly also. i could just as easily say that everything is about violence or the absense of violence. everything is about hate or the absense of hate. everything is about life or the absense of life. nothing means anything.

"okay but everything IS about ___" no it isn't! there are no universal themes! i'm trying to say that there are no universal themes! even the ones you like. even the ones i like.

i could just as easily say that everything is about violence or the absense of violence. everything is about hate or the absense of hate. everything is about life or the absense of life

You certainly could! And that would be neat to analyze :3

I fucking hate Goodwill because it's a scam. My dad says the owner of the Goodwill in town takes like 10 high end vacations a year. But I desperately needed cheap clothes. I found a pair of pale green linen shorts with daisies printed on them

The evils of Goodwill aside, thrift stores, peddler's malls and antique shops are literally the best thing to come out of capitalism. Like yes so much excess and waste but what if we put it all in a cramped little shop full of strange items and objects like some sort of cursed wizard market

I can't control myself at the peddlers mall. They always have so much colored glass

Not to mention the amazing insanity that is flea markets. I don't know how widespread they are, but they're common in the southeast USA. I lived near the biggest one in the region and it was the most overwhelming labyrinth of open air market and dingy ships in old shipping containers. They sold everything from live goats to swords to shampoo to cactus fruits to antiques to illegal drugs. I only was ever brave enough to venture a few layers deep.

Last flea market a guy got a hernia from trying to carry out the granite gargoyle he just bought

It is crazy to me how when we teach animals to speak, they don't speak with a discernible accent.

Moths are only drab or ugly if you don't look closely. Most every moth is the most beautiful creature, with excellent shapes, patterns, lines and squiggles decorating the wings, fabulous fancy antennae, and elegant fluff that sometimes gives the appearance of 70's leg warmers or a luxurious fur-trimmed cloak.

For instance look at this fit from the other day. Pure class and elegance.

It's not the best picture, but maybe you'll appreciate this moth from my work the other day; she's wearing some dark lace that is *chef's kiss*

(I got her back outside after I took her picture)
