“I am a monument to all your sins.”
Ok I’m gonna talk about Halo for a sec…
I want to specifically look at Halo 2 where the Master Chief and the Arbiter meet the Gravemind. For a little context, here’s the scene.
Everyone loves to fangirl about that line: “I am a monument to all your sins.” But aside from the hardcore Halo fans who’ve deep-dived the lore like they were marine biologists in the Mariana Trench, I don’t think much of tumblr.com knows the implications behind those words.
Congratulations, I’m giving you the sparknotes version of it right here right now.
Let’s get some more context: Halo lore goes back well over 100,000 years. We start with the Precursors who basically made everything except the universe (but we don’t know for sure because they are so fucking old). They made the next group we are well aware of, the Forerunners, and then they made us, humanity. They also made this thing called the Mantle of Responsibility which basically states that whomstever holds it is the guardian of all life in the galaxy. The Forerunners were to get until the Precursors started favoring us instead of them. The Forerunners get pissy about it and kill basically Precursor in this galaxy and driving the surviving ones to other galaxies where some of the Precursors lived out the rest of their days and others put themselves into stasis until they would be welcomed again by their children. The problem was that their bodies were corrupted in stasis and they eventually transformed into plague.
That plague was The Flood.
The Flood eventually finds its way back to our galaxy and starts attacking humans to test them. Yes, to test them. It’s very much implied that the Precursors transforming into the Flood was intentional as a way to test a species’ worthiness for the Mantle. Humanity get desperate in its fight against the Flood and does something interesting: We sacrifice a third of our population to the Flood by injecting them with a supposed countermeasure. To our surprise, it works, but actually we impressed the Flood/Precursors so much with our tactic that they decide that they were right and the Mantle will eventually belong to us.
All the while the Forerunners are completely unaware of this, only aware that Humanity was running for something while decimating Forerunner worlds and talking to something called the Primordial. The Forerunners fight us back, find the Primordial who is revealed to be a Gravemind of sorts, realized Humanity was running from the Flood, and build the Halo rings. A bunch of Forerunner politics comes into play during this period which culminates in the arrival of the Flood in Forerunner territories and the firing of the Halo rings, bringing us to where we are today.
Now, lets look at that line again: “I am a monument to all your sins.” The Gravemind was addressing Master Chief and Cortana directly. John (Master Chief) is frequently referred to as “Reclaimer” throughout the series by Forerunner constructs like 343 Guilty Spark (the floating light bulb thing). This is in reference to Humanity being the next bearers of the Mantle of Responsibility. However, being next in line for the Mantle means we will be tested by the Flood again. And, again, Humanity may have to prove that it is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.
The Gravemind is a monument to the past sins of the Forerunners and of Humanity, yes. But the Gravemind is also stating that its a monument to the sins Humanity will commit on the road to obtaining the Mantle.
That line not only implies the horrors that came before, but also the horrors to come. And that is why it is such a raw and powerful line.
The devs of this website are so childish and cannot respond to criticism. People are giving very elegant and verbose criticisms, without hatred, genuine criticism, and then the staff are whining and crying about it. Imagine being this hostile toward your userbase and then begging them for money; touting memes and jokes that you stole from them. And that's another thing -- nothing about the memes and jokes the staff & devs parade around is their own original thoughts. They mock the userbase they steal from then wonder why that userbase is actively hostile toward them back.
here's your fucking feedback @staff
list of problems the removal of icons causes:
- i cant see my friends
- ruins the sense of community
- can't tell at a glance who's online right now and what they're interested in
- literally cannot tell without scrolling back up who put a post on my dash if it has a single addition attached to it. or like. 2 paragraphs in the op.
- i cant click my own icon at the top of the dash to quickly view my own blog
- can't tell who someone used to be if they change their username
- squashes the margins between the menu and posts, making the whole dash feel more cramped
- ruins the quick visual cue of how long each post is and where it ends when you're trying to scroll past ones youve seen before
- people put a lot of creativity and individuality into icons, and now i never see them
- makes people who primarily reblog instead of make their own posts all but completely disappear
list of problems solved by removing icons:
- ?????
- who the fuck was asking for this
- ive never in my life seen a website or app that has profile pics forcibly HIDE them, so i guess you did it you made the dash unique again in the worst way
here's some more feedback: maybe when you run an a/b test you should, idk, actually have a feedback form people can fill out about it somewhere
my belief is that everyone who works in a restaraunt or retail should make a minimum of $25 an hour and should get a half hour break every four hours and if your boss or manager tries to make you work during your break or skips it, they get chased out of town by wild dogs
"You can't ship that!"
lol what are you gonna do, climb inside my mind and shut off the imagination switch?
This kind of response always fascinates me, so while I've got you here, can I just ask: legal by what standards? Do you mean real world standards, where laws vary from country to country, and in the case of the US, state to state? Or do you mean the fictitious laws set in place in the fictional setting of the ship? What standard exactly should we use to tell people "you're not allowed to enjoy this fictional thing?"
I know you didn't mean any harm by your response, but I feel it's important to reiterate that nothing gives anyone the right to police what people do in a fictional setting, full stop. Because at the end of the day, it's fiction, it's a fantasy, none of it is real, and so real world rules and standards do not apply. So, as long as you are not actively causing harm in a real world setting (i.e. harassing real people over fictional ships) then you do you.
a very important addition
Something that also drives me NUTS with this "uwu if it's legal" shit is like...
Y'all only EVER. Say it about sexual stuff. "Oh wow well if it's LEGAL-!" bitch my ass is out here playing DnD. I roleplay a devil-them who KILLS PEOPLE FOR A LIVING and yet I don't see y'all rushing to tell me that those thoughts are illegal and bad and noooo you can't do THAT, murder is ILLEGAL.
It's because y'all are a bunch of puritan weirdos about sex and I reblogged a post that hits why right on the nose but dear FUCK y'all need to really unpack all of your weirdness about sex. Like. Right now. Because it's all conservative bullshit.
ACAB includes the thought-police.
I litterally haven’t been able to stop thinking about this video all day
you know what? i knew this video was going to be bad and yet i can’t stop thinking about it. i feel like the modern day adam and eve. i knew just by the thumbnail it was going to be bad but it was worse than i could ever imagine once i took the bite. and now i am infected with evil. op is a serpent.
It just keeps going
[ID: an edited Calvin and Hobbes panel where Calvin sits, smiling, at a lemonade stand with a sign taped to the front of the table. It reads: It’s time to retire that other meme and replace it with this template. Change my mind. Next image is the same meme but the sign reads: Steven Crowder does not deserve a meme format. Change my mind. /end]
See this just feels so much better. I’ve read enough of those comics to know that Calvin has some really deep insights rattling around in his head. And look how happy and attentive he looks. You could absolutely have a polite, intelligent, and enriching conversation with this kid. Meanwhile Steven Crowder is so financially incentivized to always look like the smartest guy in any given room that the only way to change his mind is with a 2x4 to the side of the head. Which, I admit, would be enriching in its own way.

when i say 'i want worse graphics', some ppl assume i mean 'i want stylyzed instead of realistic' then get mad at me for saying it wrong (???) so let me be clear:
i want worse graphics. i want the models topology to be a bit off, i want the rigging to have a few verts mis-weighted, i want the final model to not be accurate to the concept art cuz it would have been too labor intensive to make the scarf that long. i want the shading to do the thing where a real time character shadow is casting on top of another baked in shadow. i want whatever eases the devs workload and prevents crunch so they can go home to their loved ones and actually enjoy their life outside of work
and im not kidding
“credit goes to the artist! :)”
well unfortunately it really fucking didn’t, is the thing
not enough people really know what credit is for, so it bears repeating:
if I see art I like and want to see more of it, Credit is what gets me to the artist so I can see more of it.
If I’m writing a novel and I see an art style that would be perfect for a cover design, credit is what gets me to the artist so I can pay them for a commission.
If I see something I know my partner would love, credit is what takes me to the website of the artist where I can buy a poster that the original artist gets paid for.
If I see Plagiarism, I need to know who to notify to stop stealing my art, and if they don’t who to report.
Most artists (even the ones with thousands of followers) have a hard time making a living off of art. Giving credit means giving a pathway to the source.

agree to pay your workers fairly and the strikes will end, it’s that easy you greedy shits!
More and more I am thinking that the reason the studios are refusing to budge is because any deal other than the workers unconditional surrender would require the studios to make streaming numbers public so workers know what fair pay is, and companies have been lying about streaming numbers so much that making the real numbers public could result in lawsuits and possible criminal charges from the investors they've defrauded.
There has been an outpouring of public support for unions the past few years I don't think the execs would refuse to even make a counter offer unless there was more going on.
