... Star Wars #1
In 1978 I was born into a post-Star Wars world. Like so many of my contemporaries, I grew up in a time when Star Wars was the biggest things in pop culture. It's kind of hard to remember now in a world where blockbusters are normal and everything in pop culture is "huge" for about 5 minutes, but in the late 70s-mid 80s, the only thing bigger than Star Wars was Michael Jackson (more on him and the "concerts" I would perform for my grandparents another time).
Of course I grew up loving it. I watched the movies on a loop (on my VCR that weighed a metric ton, of course), I wore the clothes, I listened to the music, I played with the toys. And when it had it's revival in the 90s, I was thrilled. Seeing a New Hope in the theater again in 1997 was one of the most exciting nights at the movies I can remember.
I say all this not to proclaim myself as some sort of super fan, but simply to make it clear, I love Star Wars. And yet... I have always had a hard time getting into the Expanded Universe novels and comics. Something was always missing. Maybe the music. Maybe the effects. I don't know what exactly, but they never worked for me.
Enter Star Wars #1, the relaunch at Marvel. I'm a big fan of both writer Jason Aaron and illustrator John Cassaday. I was still skeptical, though. I shouldn't have been.
The comic works from page one where it says "A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away" in that very familiar font. It feels like Star Wars. The characters sound like themselves. The action is fun. It is exactly what you imagine a story between A New Hope and Empire might be like. This is the Star Wars comic I've been waiting for. If you're a fan, check this out. It'll feel more like catching up with some old friends than any other Star Wars project since Jedi came out has.
