Two Cloaked Figures

Two cloaked figures at the end of the street

Sneaking and lurking in the dark of the moonless night

Beware of their nimble hands, lest there be knives in their robes

How would we know they don’t possess knives but only scars?

Scars from their bondage and resistance, hollow trust enveloping like second nature

A path to choice they seek, to a free nowheresville and to life

Two cloaked figures at the end of the street

Sneaking and lurking in the dark of the moonless night

Beware of their fiery spirits and eager appetites

I would know that they’d steal your hearts and make you want to fly

Two cloaked figures at the end of the street

Two lives inspiring hundreds, if only we would see

‼️  EMERGENCY COMMISSIONS ‼️

REBLOGS APPRECIATED!

Hey everyone,

Im opening emergency commissions to help cover the cost of vet bills for an animal my friend and I unexpectedly rescued last night. I’m willing to share details via DM for anyone that wants to hear more, but I don’t want to put the details on this post.

The final charge could be as high as $3,700, and seeing as how both my friend and I are technically unemployed this is not an amount that we can possibly fund on our own. On top of that, it’s a completely unexpected amount of money since it involves a rescued animal. We also were hit with the after-hours fee due to the timing of the event in question. The final amount will be due very soon once everything is taken care of at the vet’s office.

I am reopening some of my comic style commissions, but my medieval manuscript commissions are also still open, which can be seen here: (link).

Pricing for comic style commissions is as follows: Half body: $15 (extra character +$7) Full body: $25 (extra character +$10)
I am able to sell prints of completed pieces via my print store (privately uploaded to inprnt) for anyone who would be interested. Previous commissions seen in medieval & comic style can be viewed in my #commissions tag on my blog.

If you’d like a commission, please DM me and we will begin the process from there. Image references are appreciated (and don’t have to be anything fancy). Payments preferably made via PayPal. I also have cashapp and ko-fi.

Tips are also greatly appreciated though of course not necessary.

If you’d like to send anything our way without a commission, everything helps, and my kofi can be found here: https://ko-fi.com/boneshit

Tiny update: I think the final portion of the fee is going to be ~$600, maybe more because we can’t get that sum until two days from now so they may add a holding fee and we can’t pay until we pick up.

All commissions are still open and I’m appreciative of everyone’s help and kindness.

“People always say that sunflowers track the sun. So I watched the sunflowers grow and saw that they did not.

The young plants did trace the sun from East to West, but when the blooms finally opened, they would cease to chase the sun.

One day, I would also like to gain my independence from the sun.” - Linus

Why does Disney's Esmeralda have green eyes?

If you've read Hugo's book or seen any other adaptation of Esmeralda you've most likely noticed that she always has either black or brown eyes.

So why does Disney's Esmeralda have green eyes?

Why would they make her eyes green when in the book it specifically states that her eyes are black?

The answer is simple and there are a couple of reasons why Disney made this bold decision.

1. La Esmeralda means emerald in Spanish.

In the book,Esmeralda got her name from the necklace that she always wore. This necklace had a large green emblem that resembled an emerald.

However,Disney's Esmeralda doesn't have this necklace.

So instead, they gave her emerald green eyes. This was done in order to justify her name.If her eyes were black, and she didn't have her green necklace-there would be no point in her being named Esmeralda.

2. Iconic and memorable design.

Disney is well known for their colourful and memorable character designs.Esmeralda is no exception.

She was designed in such a way that makes her stand out.Apart from Clopin,Esmeralda is the most vibrant and colourful character in the movie.

Moreover,in case you hadn't noticed,Esmeralda is the only character in the movie who has green eyes.Even Quasimodo's eyes are a mixture of blue and light green, but still lean more towards the colour blue.

So Esmeralda is the only character with green eyes. This was done to make her stand out,as well as to make her design even more colourful and hard to forget.

3. History behind green eyes.

Image

I don't really know if Disney did this intentionally or not,but it would make perfect sense if Esmeralda's eyes were green, considering the time and story she's in.

The story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame takes place in the 15th century France.More specifically in 1482.

Back then, green eyes were seen as evil and a sign of witchcraft and sorcery.

So it makes perfect sense for Esmeralda to have green eyes, since she is seen as a witch and sorceress by Frollo.

Not only would she be seen as a witch and a demon because of her Romani background and her shameful dances, but also because of her green eyes.

So yeah,i don't know if this was intentional or not,but it's certainly an interesting concept to think about.

Gonna say that the, “Hard to forget” line stands so strong with me. I’m also gonna be honest. She was actually the reason I checked out the Disney version. Because she is simply...stunning. Also other reasons too.

But in all seriousness with all of this info and possibilities of why they were made green. These are honestly perfect. Overall good post. :)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it🥺💖

I can't exactly remember why I first watched the Disney movie, but I think it also had something to do with Esme. Anyway, she's my personal favourite Disney girl of all time😔💖

These are all great points! If I may add on...

1. Esmeralda's eyes not only stand out in the character design because she's the only character with them, but also because they are the only pops of green on her person. Quasimodo's eyes blend in a lot more because their greenish hues match his tunic, but Esme's stand as a point of sharp contrast to her outfit and as such, the audience's eyes are drawn to them.

And 2. Disney most likely did this intentionally, seeing how so many of their past villains have green eyes, or associate themselves with green in some way, like with Ursula's magic or Dr. Faciliers voodoo-slime-thing. Also of note that the only official Disney princess with green eyes, and she also has magic powers. So I would say that it's very likely. It would definitely fit in to the theme of not judging people by their looks, albeit much more subconsciously.

Great points! I mentioned that whole 'she's the only character with green eyes in the whole movie' bit but I didn't exactly elaborate on that. Thank you for adding more points and expanding some of the already existing ones😊💖

I found this very interesting!

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

Licherally in the midst of drawing a guy and crying at how bad the arms are. Thanks Tumbles

I only ever saw the part where people started drawing the limbs outrageously long and genuinely wanted to know how to fix that, so I’m really thankful to see the rest.

@purplexiasphinx heres but how much extend for ya

how much extend

I always struggled drawing arms! This will come in handy!

How to Draw and Design Gryphons and Hippogryphs by using photo references of eagles, lions and horses?

Avatar

Draw everything individually, from multiple angles.

How to draw horses || How I practice anatomy || Gesture drawing

It's like juicing up for a very tasty dream by consuming your favorite genre, characters, settings, etc and hoping your subconscious combines them.

If the final result is your target, and you see your drawing arm as a gun taking aim, then references are your bullets. Fill the chamber with reference unless you want to play roulette.

Your first step in reference gathering is to be specific. Know what you want and stick with it. I searched specifically for African Lion and Gold Eagle. Being specific helps you observe detail more accurately, and it already puts you one step ahead of generic designs.

I'm only going to tackle Lion + Eagle today for simplicity, but you can use this advice to combine two, three, or dozens of animals including horses.

Get your reference, and start practicing. Keep it simple and undetailed, only drawing the essence of the photo, rather than exact position and proportion.

Use action poses to practice! Even though they're more challenging, they will infuse your final result with action as well. Look up things like hunting, fighting, walking, running, landing, etc to get action reference.

Practice most on the creature you're having the hardest time with. That was Lions, for me. I even did a separate page where I studied the structure of their manes, since I wanted that in my griffin design.

Remember: you can trace photos as part of study! This is helpful for correcting proportions and anatomy. Make sure you are tracing mass and bones, not outlines.

Now that you're weapon is loaded with reference, you'll be able to design freehand without copying a photo. This is IDEAL because you won't be slowed down by anatomy. Now what we're here for: Design.

Creature Design Masterpost || Splice Vs Blend

This is going to be yet another visit to Splice vs. Blend technique, so strap in. Here's some guys I drew after I finished studying. No photos needed at this stage because I've eaten them all.

The most common creature design technique is something I call Splicing. You take pieces of animals and graft them onto each other with stitches. Griffins are notorious for this with their bird talons on the front legs and lion paws on the back. That's a creature that was formed through magic, not evolution. This automatically makes your griffin less believable. And probably a bit awkward in the walking department.

So here's a new challenge: Blending. Take bits of each creature and put them in a mixer, letting the ingredients land all over the place and amongst each other. What if we had a lion skull, with an extra-thick bird beak in place of the jaws? What if the lion chin was still there in the form of a tuft of fur? Maybe the tear duct from the lion, and the eyelids of bird? Let's give it lion ears with the furrowed brow so typical of raptors.

It already looks like a new life form, rather than a photoshopped amateur hour of recognizable animals. I could cover it in either feathers or fur and it would still be distinct as a new species. I want the classic lion mane in some form, so I'm taking the shape and turning it into long, fluffy feathers.

Don't stop there! Try identifying what traits make an eagle and eagle, or a lion a lion, and sticking them between each other.

Keep combining! Challenge convention! Add and omit parts and pieces to your heart's content.

Take this practice to all parts of all creatures. Throw new stuff in a blender instead of stitching it together. This especially includes color! You see a lot of spliced markings in novelty griffins, with a specific cat and bird. Artists get stuck on copy-pasting animal patterns because they're afraid the ingredients won't be recognizable, or they're just lost in the sauce of loving tigers they forget to actually have fun with it.

It's still recognizable as tiger and peacock, but much more compelling, wouldn't you say? Go for something unique rather than staying with what feels "safe." There's a million griffin artists out there, but only one You.
