scary leftist blog sharing stuff about mental health and human rights rubbish

On this day, 20 December 1973, Spanish fascist prime minister who was hand-picked as general Francisco Franco’s successor, Luis Carrero Blanco, was assassinated in Madrid. Basque separatists ETA had spent five months digging a tunnel under a road he went down to attend mass. They then detonated a bomb as he drove over, shooting his car 20 metres into the air and over a five-storey building, earning Blanco the nickname of “Spain’s first astronaut”. His successor was unable to hold together different factions of the government, and so this action was credited by some for helping accelerate the restoration of democracy after Franco’s death. The Chrome browser exists to show you ads and track where you go so that Google can show you more ads. Please stop using Chrome. Firefox is open source, and while Mozilla is not perfect, it isn’t actively fucking evil the way Google is. It has a bazillion plugins, including various (FREE!) ad block plugins (I recommend uBlock Origins, which will even block YouTube ads – you can watch videos without interruptions again!). It will also function very effectively with a lot more tabs open than Chrome. I’ve got around 800 tabs open right now (not loaded, of course, except for maybe 2 dozen; it’s been a heavy browsing day), and my wife has between 2k and 3k at any time.

We are in the New Browser Wars. This time there’s a helluva lot of money up for grabs, because a lot of it is about running those ads. Monopolies are bad for consumers.

Firefox plugins I 100% recommend if you don’t want to be tracked (and want to cost corporations money)

AdNauseam is an adblocker that generates false clicks on the ads it blocks, which costs the corporations that pay for them money.

Privacy Possum messes with the tracking data collected about you, rendering it essentially useless

TrackMeNot generates random search terms across sites, meaning that any data collected about things you actually search is buried in a sea of random bullshit. Makes it very hard for people to figure out what you’re actually doing. You can block terms in the options, which means it won’t search for anything incriminating on your behalf (I think the word bomb is blocked by default)

WhatCampaign replaces tracking analytics used in website code with data that can’t be used to track you. I’m pretty sure it replaces it with “fuck off” by default.

I’m not adding links because tumblr will not show this up if I do, but you can search these on the Firefox addons site and they’ll come up.

I've never retweeted something quicker in my life

Pretty much. If you transition slowly, people call you a trender and they question your validity, but if you do it quickly you're a bad influence onto other people who are transitioning. Yeah, it's all excuses to be transphobic. Go at your own pace, not anyone else's.

Chrome extensions I actually use as a mentally ill university student

Making websites easier to digest:

  • Dark Reader - Changes any webpage to dark mode.
  • Mercury Reader - Simplifies the layout of any webpage to eliminate distractions and irritating formatting.
  • Podcastle AI - Turns any article into a podcast. This is a lifesaver for being able to process what I’m reading, to be honest.

Spelling/grammar:

  • LanguageTool - Spelling and grammar check for those of us who regularly type in more than one language.
  • Grammarly - Spelling and grammar check for those of us who only type in English. Can be used with LanguageTool installed, which is what I do.
  • Google Dictionary - Define any word on the webpage with a double-click.
  • Google Translate - Translate an entire webpage or even just a short segment.

Misc:

  • AdGuard Adblocker - After trying quite a few adblocker options, this is the one I find the best.
  • The Great Suspender - Automatically suspend inactive tabs to help with performance.
  • Honey - Try coupon codes automatically to save money on online purchases.
  • Built-in Chrome tab grouping - Group your tabs to keep organized and minimize distracting clutter.

amazon’s entire schtick is to run other businesses into the ground by undercutting prices then ruling over their peasant customers.

FedEx just refuses to deliver to my house. It’s too rural. They just won’t do it. The USPS is gutted. If I need supplies or food or any emergency anything, am I going to risk the package being destroyed or never getting to my house, or grit my teeth and go with the chaotic evil monsters who will nonetheless give me the food or medicine I need?

And guess what? Amazon is directly and indirectly responsible for both the state of FedEx and the state of the USPS. They were allowed to create a monopoly and they were PREPARED for the further gutting of the USPS we’ve seen in late 2020. In my rural area, with a pandemic on? I think people don’t understand what I mean when I say I have no choice sometimes, the same as I have no choice but to buy Comcast internet even tho it’s overpriced and unreliable.

It. Is. A. Monopoly. By. Design. We’re being given no choice. The solution isn’t to attack the consumers; it’s to force the government to undermine the company and to actually support its citizens with things like the USPS.

Ethical consumption is a luxury afforded to the rich.

There is no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism.

im losing my mind, stop defending cops, i literally dont care how “progressive” or “pro-lgbt” you think kamala harris is, she’s guilty of defending capital, she’s guilty of upholding white supremacy, she’s guilty of perpetuating state violence, she is a class traitor, and she is guilty, and i will not stand by and watch you people try to rehabilitate her into some kind of fucking hero. what part of all cops are bastards was lost on you? what made you look at the suggested reading of the past year and go “it’s different this time”?

"Lgbt people are actually more hateful than anti lgbt groups"

Joanne’s hatefulness is literal the reason why puberty blockers are about to be banned in the UK. Your poorly written children’s book is not as important as actual trans children’s lives

Let's not forget it's also deeply racist

“Diagnostic manuals such as the DSM were created to provide a common diagnostic language for mental health professionals and attempt to provide a definitive list of mental health problems, including their symptoms.

The main findings of the research were:

• Psychiatric diagnoses all use different decision-making rules

• There is a huge amount of overlap in symptoms between diagnoses

• Almost all diagnoses mask the role of trauma and adverse events

• Diagnoses tell us little about the individual patient and what treatment they need

The authors conclude that diagnostic labelling represents ‘a disingenuous categorical system’.

Lead researcher Dr Kate Allsopp, University of Liverpool, said: “Although diagnostic labels create the illusion of an explanation they are scientifically meaningless and can create stigma and prejudice. I hope these findings will encourage mental health professionals to think beyond diagnoses and consider other explanations of mental distress, such as trauma and other adverse life experiences.”

Professor Peter Kinderman, University of Liverpool, said: “This study provides yet more evidence that the biomedical diagnostic approach in psychiatry is not fit for purpose. Diagnoses frequently and uncritically reported as ‘real illnesses’ are in fact made on the basis of internally inconsistent, confused and contradictory patterns of largely arbitrary criteria. The diagnostic system wrongly assumes that all distress results from disorder, and relies heavily on subjective judgments about what is normal.””

Reblogging again because you know why.

The dsm is politically and financially motivated and it’s frustrating to have to work within its constraints. Hope y’all are ready for a wall of text.

“What’s more, the DSM remained culture-bound and unable to cope with the complexities of gender and ethnicity in a multicultural world. […] But the DSM clearly wants to shape the wider practice of psychiatry. There is no ICD equivalent of the DSM casebook, which shows how the DSM can be used in diagnosis and treatment. Neither is the ICD implicated in the jostling between pharmaceutical companies, the health insurance industry and the psychiatry profession, as each haggles with the other over the existence or the extension of particular illness categories.Nor is the ICD a cash-cow for the WHO, unlike the DSM, which is a highly profitable enterprise. Indeed, the DSM is most certainly not disinterested.”

“Epistemologically, the expert group concluded that mental disorder categories should not be treated as natural kind categories but as constructs that have a causal impact on those who are classified. Sociologically, the group observed that diagnostic classifications tend to legitimise organisational structures and protect psychiatry from pressures to change. Moreover, the literature suggests that a biomedical approach does not, as hoped, reduce stigma and discrimination. Clinically, the group concluded that common diagnostic categories lack validity, reliability, and predictive power. Additionally, these do not tally with new conceptions of health, defined by the ability to adapt despite biopsychosocial obstacles.”

I’ve always been a big believer in case formulation over diagnosis.

“Formulation can be defined as the process of co-constructing a hypothesis or “best guess” about the origins of a person’s difficulties in the context of their relationships, social circumstances, life events, and the sense that they have made of them. It provides a structure for thinking together with the client or service user about how to understand their experiences and how to move forward. Formulation draws on two equally important sources of evidence: the clinician brings knowledge derived from theory, research, and clinical experience, while the service user brings expertise about their own life and the meaning and impact of their relationships and circumstances. […]  Unlike diagnosis, formulation is not about making an expert judgement, nor is it based on deficits. Instead, a best-practice formulation draws attention to the service user’s resources and strengths in surviving what are nearly always very challenging life situations. Most important, and in contrast to psychiatric diagnosis, psychological formulation approaches all expressions of distress with the assumption that “at some level it all makes sense” (Butler, 1998, p. 2). From a formulation-based perspective, the work of every mental health professional, whatever their training, should be based on this principle: that however unusual, confusing, risky, destructive, overwhelming, or frightening someone’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are, there is a way of making sense of them. The central task of all mental health professionals is to work alongside service users to create meaning out of chaos and despair. Formulation is a powerful and effective way of doing this. “

sarahschauer: not what I usually post but worth sharing! Credits go to @/ dollarfor on tiktok, this video has already been deleted once by the platform, so I just thought l'd share before it goes away! the health care system in America is horrendous, all my international followers who like to gloat that they get free health care, can you hold off commenting for a second - americans, please watch this.

Wait, shit, other people living in the USA......you didn’t think you actually had to pay those bills did you?? They still show you the bill, maybe even send you reminders in the mail, but they can’t pursue it. This was common knowledge for my friends and family but I’m seeing some shock over this. When you're hurt or sick and need some prescription strength medicine but you can’t schedule with a regular doctor soon enough, just go to the ER. That’s advice I received from doctors themselves. The staff are paid all the same and they’ll get around to people in order of need, so no, you are not taking anything from anyone, it’s not selfish or stupid, and yes, it’s free for the vast majority of people.
