Hey guys! As a writer myself, it’s hard to have a lot of resources for writing in one place. That’s why I decided to create this masterpost, and maybe make more if I find future resources. I hope you like it, and expect to see more masterposts like this in the future!

Websites and Apps

For Writing

  • ZenPen: A minimalist writing website to keep you free of distractions and in the flow.
  • The Most Dangerous Writing App: A website where you have to keep typing or all of your writing will be lost. It helps you keep writing…kind of. You can choose between a time or word count limit!
  • Evernote: An online website where you can take notes and save the product to your laptop and/or smartphone!
  • Writer, the Internet Typewriter: It’s just you and your writing, and you can save your product on the website if you create an account.
  • Wordcounter: A website to help check your word and character count, and shows words you’re using frequently.
  • Monospace: An Android app for writing on the go when you feel the inspiration, but you don’t have your laptop on you!

For Productivity

  • Tide: An app that combines a pomodoro-esque timer with nature sounds and other noises! (Google Play / Apple Store)
  • ClearFocus: An Android app with a pomodoro-type time counter to let you concentrate easier and stay productive.
  • Forest: An app with a time counter to keep you focused and off your phone, and when you complete the time limit, a tree grows in your garden! (Google Play / Apple Store)
  • SelfControl: A Mac downloadable app that blocks you from distracting mail servers, websites, and other things!

As international women’s day is approaching, please let us all remember that ADHD in women is still underdiagnosed. With many not getting diagnosed until adulthood or at all. (By the way, the general percentage of adults living with undiagnosed ADHD -men and women- was as high as 90% in 2012 according to Barkley.) “These are people significantly underachieving and who end up going the depression route, mostly the result of life failure. It’s like they’re running life’s race with lead weights on their ankles”. Leading to low self-esteem and a deep-seated sense of personal failure.

  • “Women with ADHD were also more likely to report a history of depression and anxiety. They had also been in psychological treatment more often and had received more prescriptions for psychotropic medications than had women without ADHD.“ So while other mental health problems (that are often caused or accelerated by the untreated ADHD!) may or may not be spotted, the ADHD often goes unnoticed. As a result, treatments do not work as effectively as they could have had the disorder been recognized. And although there recently has been a notable increase in women taking stimulant medication for their ADHD, do not make the mistake of thinking that this solves the problem. Yes, awareness is getting better but there’s still more that needs to get done.

Things that I learned in my first year at university

1. Some people are not there to work, they’re just joking around. Don't waste your time with them and try to meet the people that really care.

2. One semester passes at the speed of light. Start from day one and try not to let anything unrevised for too long (one week is considered too long).

3. Your teachers will be your saviors. They are the ones who know everything so make sure you have a good working relationship with them (let them see you know stuff and are willing to work) and then when you’re having more trouble learning something they will gladly help you.

4. Be consistent with your routine. A routine helps you get started more easily and defeat the inertia and laziness. Organizing my day as a working day, with study starting at 10 in the morning and classes in the afternoon, helps me focusing on the things I have to do, not waste time, and also have tiny pieces of time during the day to treat myself.

5. Treat yourself. Sometimes I take the bus instead of the metro because I like to watch the views. Sometimes I buy a cake for lunch. Sometimes I take a break in the park and, at the end of the day I go on a walk. Make sure you don’t forget yourself in the middle of everything. You’re the most important thing!

6. Find things that motivate you. A nice looking library, a park, a playlist, everything is valid as long as it makes you ready to work.

7. Choose your group wisely. When making group projects make sure you choose the people who really want to work, and if they don’t talk to your teachers, they will advise you. Also, don’t be afraid to make a group project on your own. You will survive, trust me! And you will learn a lot!

8. The front seat is the best. Choose a good seat in class where you can see and hear your teacher and they can hear you. The front seat is my favorite because it is easier to ignore everyone else and focus on the class.

9. Exercise. Really! Do something like walking every day, or yoga, or whatever you prefer, but make sure you move. It helps your brain and your body.

10. Have fun. At least every week or twice a month, go somewhere you like or visit a new place. Play the tourist and take your mind away from the work. That’s the way to keep your mind sane.

Sea otters and giant river otters are like if someone got two artists to design a giant otter, but ended up with two very different ideas on what they should look like cause one draws hello kitty fanart and the other was a nihilist.

Ok, but like… seriously.

this looks like sea ottters reacting to the incredible violence of a river otter

You’d think the sea otters would be hardcore and the river ones would be peaceful cuddlefluffs

Interesting Russian Websites

Here are a few Russian sites that I enjoy reading. Some are a bit more technical than others, but they all offer interesting articles.

  • ПостНаука: This website offers great articles on several science topics. Their linguistic videos, however, are my favorite thing on the website, such as this video on the Bashkir language.
  • Arzamas: This is possibly my favorite site on this list. They offer several courses on history, literature, and culture. Their 18-minute video on the Russian language is a must-see.
  • Год Литературы: You can learn about new books that come out in Russia as well as education news. They also do literary projects such as #читаемОнегина where they read out Eugene Onegin.
  • Мел: They publish short articles on different topics such as school, fun facts, and rules of the Russian language.
  • Foreigncy: This website provides news articles and videos based on one’s language level. It’s a quick way to improve your skills
  • Кот Шрёдингера: A pop-science magazine. The articles are not hard to follow and they often have fun articles such as this one.
  • Zelenykot: Articles about outer space! You can choose to read different topics such as the moon, astrophysics, Mars, and other things.
  • Элементы: For those with a science background, this website has great articles about scientific news. It often includes the data from scientific papers as well as the source in case you want to read more.
  • Котонавты: A pop-culture website as well as a podcast that mostly focuses on movies. It also has the cutest art shown below.

Thank goodness! This is so much better than that horrible mess of apostrophes they were going to use before. And it is, I suppose, elegant that they’re only using one kind of diacritic, even if it’s used to mean different things on different letters. My only real complaint is that the capital forms of dotted and dotless I are the same - couldn’t they just have used an acute accent, like with the rest of the letter variants, if they didn’t want to have a capital dotted I?
