Pinned post - F/F Fic Recs

  Anonymous asked:

Hi, I've see you saying that you're reading a lot of fic lately and I was wondering if you could rec some? I so trust your taste and I think we have so many fandons in common...

Hiya! So first, what I was reading over the summer were some new fandoms that I'm still mulling over. Those ships and fics, I'm not ready to recommend anything for, I'll come back to them later.

As you know, I find it hard to pick out faves and recommend things but coincidentally, some time back, when I hadn't read fics for years, I decided to see which I could easily remember. It’s not close to being an exhaustive list, I just noted down whatever came to me over a few hours, and almost all are pretty old, often from my first go-around in each fandom, but it’s a fair number. I've read other great ones that might not be as easily remembered for any number of reasons, like if I was in a particular frame of mind or if I read too many good ones at once so none really stood out, if I read them in between other things going on in life, etc. These ones slotted into the ole memory bank but that doesn't say anything about those left off.

I'm not sure how many of these are fandoms you're into, but when I'm in a real fic-reading mood I'll often try fandoms I don't know, so hopefully you can still give some of them a shot. I tried to organize by fandom though they're mostly in the order I remembered them, so it's not alphabetical or fave first--though it did end up being pretty chronologically backwards. I was literally going back through the years and I don't think I've read some of the anime ones in like, more than a decade? And while for my own list, I often was like oh, all of that author's fics for this ship and would know what I meant, here I tried to narrow it down to one fic per author, since it can be hard to know where to start, but definitely give their other fics a try if you liked that one.

Added a cut for length. All stories are f/f and complete unless specified. As I go through some of these, let me come back here to add that it’s worth keeping in mind as you read these that they are products of their time, some more than a decade ago.

“oh they’re not taking away chronological dashboard, well everything’s okay then” they also said in the post they’re making reblogs collapsed (like comments on twitter) so you won’t see the full conversation in a post. they also won’t get rid of tumblr live despite it being an annoying and cancerous data-miner that isn’t legal in much of the world. they won’t even let you opt out of tumblr live for more than seven days. they implemented a terrible photo viewer that mimics tiktok and makes it so you can’t zoom in on images. they took away the ability to view prev tags. they’re making it so you have to sign in with your email to view almost any thing on tumblr. they’ve already made it so you have to sign in to send asks, even on anon. they’re slowly phasing out custom blog themes.

the things that make tumblr at all usable and favored by us– the older web blog features, the anonymity– that is still being taken away. it HAS been being taken away for some time now. i am urging you people to reveiwbomb the tumblr app. force them to acknowledge that users do not like these changes.

Getting emotional thinking about how Ah Toy doesn’t have to pretend and be all dressed up with Nellie. She’s the only one who can see the real Ah Toy behind her mask 🥺 Though she won’t complain when Ah Toy does dress up because her wife is smoking hot!

Some scenarios that live in my head rent-free:

  • Ah Toy and Nellie bonding with Lai and their girls
  • Ah Toy and Nellie slow dancing in their cottagecore kitchen.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie sharing stories about their lives.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie planting tomatoes together, to honor Ah Toy’s grandmother.
  • Ah Toy still likes to keep in shape with her sword. Nellie likes watching her.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie relaxing in a bath together.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie getting a bit too tipsy while sampling their wine.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie adopting a pet. Cat? Dog?
  • Why haven’t we heard any pet names for them?? Things like “darling” and “honey” and “my love”.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie having a keepsake that remind them of each other when they’re apart.
  • Ah Toy having nightmares about that night at the brothel. What if she wasn’t strong enough and Nellie got killed?? Nellie holding her and comforting her when that happens.
  • Ah Toy and Nellie just looking at each other when the other doesn’t notice. They’re both thinking “God, how is this my life? How is she real?”
  • Ah Toy and Nellie saying “I love you” for the first time (bonus if they’re speaking Cantonese)

Awww, this is such a cute list. These would make for great vignettes in a fic.

And you know, even though they're currently separated, they still hold true and make sense because they've broken up for such external reasons that are tied to Ah Toy's seasonal arc, I don't think it's at all impossible to hope that the successful completion of that arc would lead to a reunion, if not sooner, obviously. And if not this season, then as long as they're alive, after. They still seem to be two of the more caring, responsible people on the whole show.

God, Dickhead is the WORST! Threatening to out them and the Page Act which deported Chinese women for being prostitues. YIKES. I really enjoyed Nellie telling him "fuck your railroad" in the politest way possible. Despite knowing it wouldn't end well. Ah Toy lost everything when she came to America, and had to deal with so much shit! She literally built herself up from the ground. Now this rich white dude thinks he can take it away from her? Oh, she'll get her revenge! But hopefully not at the cost of her relationship with Nellie.

Whoops, I'm a bit late to answer this so we've already seen that at the moment, their relationship hasn't survived this. D:

It was definitely nice to see in the moment Nellie telling him no, but I fear that's how it's gonna be for the next 4-5 eps, minor victories followed by big losses. There's so much against them, Buckley, Douglas, the new police chief, the secret service, Leary, whatever rebellion's brewing in Mai Ling's tong. No doubt Ah Toy's gonna get pulled into at least some of it.

SPOILERS for Warrior Episode 4

Where to fucking start with this episode? The beginning of the episode broke my heart all over again. So much death and destruction! Even worse is the rift it caused between Ah Toy and Nellie. Ah Toy blaming Nellie and herself for indulging in this fantasy that was too good to be true. It’s easier for Nellie to be optimistic with her privilege as a wealthy white lady. In season 2 she pushed Nellie away because it wasn’t safe in Chinatown. Now she’s pushing Nellie away because it’s not  safe for them outside of Chinatown. Ah Toy leaving after telling Nellie “Happy mean nothing if you are dead.” Fucking hell.

Ah Toy going back to Chinatown and immediately throwing herself back into work. Staring in the mirror, the bruises on her face. Covering up her wounds and trauma with makeup, wearing her dress like armor. Back to square one again and it sucks. It was sweet when Ah Sahm came to see her though. We also see the darkness in Lai rising again, poor baby. I guessed that Ah Toy’s line was gonna be the title, “In Chinatown, no one think about forever.”

Finally, Nellie is crushed when that judge took her away their land as “imminent domain.” She starting to see the limits of her power as a wealthy white woman, because of sexism. The fucking audacity of Dickhead to be like “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Nellie was unhinged and dragged his ass in front of everyone. Flashbacks to Penny and Buckley last season…please don’t throw her in an asylum! It wasn’t surprising that he bribed the judge. If he did that, then what’s the point of attacking the vineyard and killing innocent women?? Male ego and pettiness, that’s what!

I hope we’ll see Ah Toy and Nellie  together again next episode. They need each other more than ever now! Ah Toy will get revenge eventually, so Dickhead better watch out!

Yeah, the opening was brutal, and the thing is, normally I'd think Ah Toy is reacting more to her internalized fear and indeed, punishing herself for daring to wish for more, for herself, but in the end she's right. Usually Nellie WOULD be able to use her lawyers and money would win, but you can't win against someone who's just as white and wealthy as you and also male and who wants power and uses that to influence others. It's such a good point, why attack when you were already going to get the land? Just plain evil.

Indeed, now, I'm not sure what the plot is for Nellie going forward. They probably won't repeat something from before, but her role on the show is tied so strongly to Ah Toy, what is there for her if they're separated? And as much as I wish they are back together in the next ep, I think this is the part of that review where Ah Toy is going to be depressed, because in effect she has lost Nellie. If she were to get that support again, I feel like that would help resolve her arc too quickly. I think there's more of downward spiral in store for her, for all of them, until enough is enough.

But, you know, that actually makes me more hopeful for Nellie's future, at least at the moment. It's absolutely very possible that she does die in the next eps, but there's no narrative weight to it now, she's already lost everything, and she and Ah Toy are already separated. Its biggest impact would have been when they were happy together, so in ep 3, actually. Now... I'm just not sure.

That scene of Ah Toy putting on the makeup was so good! Sad but very effective and honestly, kind of beautiful. Although, see, that's where I think it IS her punishment for herself and inability to accept she deserves more that stops Ah Sahm, because, well, why not assassinate him? They've done it before. But I guess that's literally her season's arc. It'll happen, hopefully, even if later on, that's the "getting even" part the review addresses.

bb have you watched dead ringers? i'm a huge rachel weisz lover and i do enjoy unhinged characters, i know there's lots of queer sex scenes there , but im scared it'll be too horror?

I have not, I might, I like Rachel Weisz, Britne Oldford, and f/f, but it seems grotesque to me in a way I don't think I can handle. I'm bad at body horror stuff. :x Especially when it involves pregnancy.

Anonymous asked:

have u watched las pelotaris 1926

I did! I ended up quite liking Ane and Itzi, but the ending felt cruel, in so many ways! I think my last reply about it was before the season finale, I didn't expect nothing about them. So now I'm a little miffed with the writers, but of course there needs to be a second season to fix everything, including this horrible new situation they're in. Dunno if we'll get it, but, you know.

Anonymous asked:

they canceled bienvenidos a eden 👎🏽, with Netflix’s track record I’m sure this isn’t surprising news (I was actually surprised it even got a second season)

I’m gonna go to my happy place and pretend that bel and zoa got to live happily on Eden together free of the crazy alien cult

And another anon:

Welcome to eden has been cancelled as well. I never watched but it's still kind of annoying...

Honestly, I AM a bit surprised, given that it was an international show but I also didn't hear much about people viewing it, so in that respect, yes, even a s2 was unexpected.

I'm definitely conflicted about it, on the one hand, I worried about Bel and Zoa through the hiatus and and season 2 and it feels almost impossible that they'd survive season 3, but on the other hand, they did surprisingly so well with them over two seasons, why not give them the benefit of the doubt for a third? And it's DEFINITELY annoying to lose a legit wlw lead, especially on a show like this, not to mention all the other queer rep too.

And on a cliffhanger too! It'd really be so smart of them to come back for so many of these shows and just wrap them up with at least a movie, so at least they'd be watchable in the future for new audiences, instead of simply being dead in the water.

I've liked Kate Box in other stuff but... something about Dulcie is incredibly attractive to me. Is it her competence? The uniform? Her apparently endless patience for idiots? Who can say.

All those things! And her voice. Although, not just the uniform, she looks so good in just slacks and a shirt. That last scene, my god, they knew what they were doing! She could not have been styled to look more of a dreamboat.

But I really do love her character, the by-the-book earnest helpful kind leads are always my weakness.

Anonymous asked:

You're so right about the genuine drama in Deadloch. The satire and jokes are great, but I was hanging on every word of the argument between Dulcie and her wife as if it mattered more than the murders. It was meaty stuff, such satisfying relationship drama for a show with so many piss jokes!

I was trying to answer this last night before the season finale dropped today, so I won't say anything about it, and also because it was really great and I don't want to spoil anyone, but right, and then the next ep just stepped it up?? The convo with Cath had me going oof, and then in ep 7, the interrogations got like, bleak.

I remember thinking to myself how effective it was that they started to get serious with Vic, since she'd always had a bit of gravitas that the others didn't, and so it felt so much more real with her, and it was so real, the subject matter, and then the usually very clownishly OTT Aleyna and Vanessa, it was really well done! It's such a smart show in terms of humor, in terms of drama, in terms of setting up a mystery, but in its emotional intelligence too, knowing when to back off the gag and when to press home. Whew.
