bizarre to me that star trek is always having ships that can dock with one another as if there’s this universal docking port design that somehow these species who have never been in contact with one another both got their hands (or other appendages) on. i think they should be mechanically isolated* and therefore unable to connect. there should be more flying of shuttlepods into launch bays bc the hatches on a ship/pod don’t align.

Example of Star Trek Addressing Social Issues - Mental Illness
This scene got me right in the gut when I first saw it. It was revealed earlier in the episode that Garak suffers from extreme claustrophobia, experiencing a severe attack just a few scenes before this one. I was already expecting Martok and Worf to dismiss Garak’s mental illness, especially because the Klingon Empire prides its people on physical strength. I was waiting for them to call him a coward, not “getting over it” like I’ve heard so many times in my own life about mental illness. But as seen above that’s not what happened, the exact opposite does. Its moments like this that make me love Star Trek, even for all its flaws. Sometimes I get to see past my conditioned reaction of the worst, and get to see the best in people instead.
TDLR; Star Trek may be about aliens in the future, but it connects to me on a human level - more than most modern shows do today.

Is that why it’s so good?

Thoughts on eyeline matches, TOS, and communicating romance to the viewer
Eyeline matches, very simply, are a cut from an actor looking off screen to some disconnected object that was not frame. The cut communicates that the person was looking at the object. Note, not all cutaway shots are eyeline matches. The geometry and framing of the shot impacts this in complicated ways---but needless to say, if you've seen anything with two actors in different frames talking back and forth, each of those cuts are eyeline matches.
In TOS, attraction is generally communicated by eyeline matching an observer (typically male, in TOS usually Kirk) to a (often panning) shot of a person (typically female). In TOS this technique is often combined with a Gaussian blur over the woman to really hammer home that we're seeing her through Kirk's eyes.
The impact of this edit is so strong that it totally overrides acting choices. For instance, in Elaan of Troysius, we get a very blatant camera panning shot up her body despite Shatner not acting particularly attracted to Elaan (compare his reactions to Edith, or Areel, or, as we'll discuss, Spock).
And the flip side here is that the absence of this also overrides acting choices. It's very hard to deny from a still frame of Kirk looking at Spock that Kirk is attracted to him. We've all seen the gifs, there is very little difference in the way Shatner acts opposite Collins (Edith Keeler) as he does Nimoy.
But there is a difference in the edit! We don't get a panning shot up Spock's body every time Kirk sweeps his eyes over him (one exception: The Motion Picture). We see Kirk being love lorn, but we don't experience it, and so the uncareful viewer does not intuit that Kirk is displaying attraction to Spock.
All this is to bring me to my point: imagine TOS, as-is, but every time Kirk looks at Spock like that there's a cut away shot of Nimoy with the Gaussian filter (maybe the soft strings, too). Just imagine how that would play. No other changes, just inserting those missing eyeline matches.
I am making my loneliness small. So small it fits on a postcard a baby rabbit could eat. The sun sets like an expensive fragrance. Like the memory of a neck.

IF YOURE AN ENGLISH SPEAKER HERES SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW:
IN THE ORIGINAL ITALIAN, DANTE'S INFERNO RHYMES. THE ENTIRE THING.
THE ENTIRE DIVINE COMEDY RHYMES.
HEARING MY ITALIAN PROFESSOR READ THE FIRST CANTO OUT LOUD IN THE ORIGINAL ITALIAN WAS A FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE FOR ME.
I COULDNT UNDERSTAND A WORD OF WHAT WAS BEING SAID BUT EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE ROOM WAS HIT WITH THE SUDDEN AND INTENSE FEELING THAT THE PERSON WHO WROTE THESE WORDS WAS A MASTER OF THEIR LANGUAGE.
IT IS FAIR TO CALL THE DIVINE COMEDY TRANSCENDANT IN ITS BEAUTY.
* not just rhyme its uhmm all lines have 11 syllabes and it rhymes like ABA BCB CDC etc etc etc for EVER very good
ITS A POETIC FORM CALLED TEZRA RIMA THAT IS FAMOUSLY DIFFICULT TO USE WELL
AND MOST ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS DO KEEP VERY CLOSE TO THE ORIGINAL 11 SYLLABLE METER
NEVERMIND POST CANCELLED
NOTES OF THIS POST:
50% AWESTRUCK ENGLISH SPEAKERS
40% BAFFLED ITALIANS
9% PEOPLE WHO DONT UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RHYME AND VERSE
1% HUMAN PET GUY
... are u telling me that English translations don't follow the original rhyming
TRYING TO MAKE THE DIVINE COMEDY RHYME IN ENGLISH WOULD ABSOLUTELY BUTCHER IT
MOST ENGLISH POETRY IS BASED OFF ALLITERATION AND STRESS RHYTHMS BECAUSE ENGLISH IS A FRANKENSTIEN LANGUAGE WITH SO FEW RHYME GROUPS THAT RHYME OFTEN COMES OFF AS AWKWARD AND SING-SONGY
ITS WHY SHAKESPEARE IS SO IMPRESSIVE HE ROUTINELY MANAGED TO BEAT ENGLISH INTO SHAPE LONG ENOUGH TO RHYME FOR TEN WHOLE LINES WHILE MAKING IT SOUND PERFECTLY NATURAL
Although, to be fair, Shakespeare often did this by making up new words. Because, fuketh iteth
Actually, hating kids is actively harmful whether you think you're subtle about it or not. I was one of those annoying, loud, attention-seeking kids, and I knew instinctively when adults/teenagers hated me (and kids in general), and all it did was convince me that I couldn't tell any adults about the abuse I was experiencing at home because they wouldn't care or listen to me. Once again I am saying there is no good reason to hate all children, and if you do then you need to actively work on that because you share society and public spaces with children so the odds of you having to interact with them at some point are very high, and they don't need to internalize your weird hang-ups just because you refuse to get over yourself. Kids are at the mercy of adults and the adult world around them. You do not have to make growing up any harder than it already is.
How do the people this post is about keep missing the point this badly
Do you ever lie awake wondering how the heck Gimli knows what a nervous system is

tired: legolas took gimli to valinor with him because they were bffs/in love/etc.
wired: legolas took gimli to valinor to prove the world was flat after arguing with him about it for decades
Sorry it’s what to elves
So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth). But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven. To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk. So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.
This is why Legolas can see for such great, almost impossible distances. The Earth does not curve for him.
Legolas said fuck the horizon
listen people are starting to realize tumblr isn’t dead we all need to be as cringe as possible for the next few months, it’s vital to our survival
I love that op said “be as cringe as possible” and my main man Tumblr replied with giffs of Superwholock in that exact order. I love you all so much.
