Quick redraw based on this post made by @aisaki-emiru because the idea was way too adorable to slip up.

(I wanted to do this a long while ago but didn’t feel like it since we hadn’t seen WO just yet, so I’m glad I waited, though the hair colour will def turn out wrong doh!)

The trait Hajime has, that sets himself apart from all the other “I don’t quite feel special” protagonists out there is despite his insecurity, he carries an air of narcissism. He actively seeks out a chance in the spotlight. He doesn’t just not want to be normal, he thinks he’s BETTER than all the other normals and that he deserves to be at Hopes Peak. Notice how in the beginning of the game he carries an air of thinking he’s above everyone else. The big deadly sin that made him take the Kamukura project was pride, in thinking he deserved to have talent and to be revered. This dual trait of insecurity and narcissism is extremely complex and it makes him more than just another protagonist who’s not sure of themselves.

op are you kidding me rn. We just throw the word narcissism at literally anyone who wants to feel special. Are you for real. Do most people not want to feel special sometimes. He literally LITERALLY does nothing of the sort. Nothing he says at the beginning of the game indicates believing he’s better than everyone else. Him wanting to be better is not fucking narcissistic. It’s normal. It is normal for people to want to be special. 

Narcissism is like. A word with meaning. If you’re a narcissist in the conventional sense it means you value yourself over everyone else. You think you’re the most important person in the room, and you get offended and hurt by anyone who threatens that. It must always be about you. When does Hinata do that? At any point? What kind of horrific take is this?

Hinata lives in a society that places people with talent on this massive pedestal, and fuck everyone else. The reserve course and HPA is just microcosmic pinnacle of this mentality. What is he supposed to do? If the world only treats you as important if you’re shsl, then you’re going to want to be shsl. It’s an obvious societal problem that’s severely impacted the self worth of Hinata. It’s not even just Hinata, Komaeda’s got a warped version of this too.

You are calling Hinata a narcissist for wanting to feel special, as if that’s the defining attribute of a narcissist is just horrifically ignorant. Hinata did not sign up for the Kamukura project out of vanity. Hinata signed up for it because he felt like absolute garbage as himself. He felt that being his untalented self makes him not good enough, because the society around him treats him like so. He just wants to be good enough. It’s not about what he thinks he “deserves” holy shit. The flaw that leads Hinata to take the project is not him believing he deserves more. It’s that his ability to love himself has been so thoroughly incapacitated by a society that refuses to value him that he’s desperate enough to try and find it elsewhere. 

You’ve assigned Hinata an entire character trait he does not have to explain why he’s interesting, when the backbone of what makes Hinata an interesting character is that he’s insecure and throughout the game learns to accept and love himself for who he is. Chapter 6 literally spells this out for you when Nanami is like “be confident in yourself bitch” and you meanwhile are throwing the word narcissism out there just nbd. 

…anyways hajime held an air of narcissism that was equally tied to his crippling self-doubt/worth that lead to his downfall.
