This may be the most 1970s fashion spread I have ever seen. God, I love the Vogue archive.

I can tell you right now: yes. Star Wars was an era-defining absolutely massive mainstream hit, much in the same way the Marvel Cinematic Universe had a cultural chokehold on the 2010s. May the era never return.

It was associated with nerds because it was the nerds who were *really* into it, going to cons and doing cosplay and shit.

But yes, it was mainstream. Extremely mainstream. I honest to god cannot emphasize enough how completely fucking mainstream Star Wars, and what gets derived as "nerd" culture, is the absolute gold standard hard core main stream.

As someone who saw Star Wars in first run as a child in the 1970s — yes, all of this. It’s hard to overexaggerate just how all-pervasive it was.

My (step)mom was in her early 30s with three kids when it came out and she loved that movie. It was a huge crowd-pleaser with a giant fan base that extended far beyond the stereotypical nerds.
