So the other day I got overwhelmed and heartsick because the world is a lot, so I made a list of charities and sites to donate so I could share it with my friends and family but I figured I might as well share it here too as a donation masterpost of sorts, tho of course it is noncomprehensive

a grad student at NYU, Alía Warsco, has created a free and open-source library of Quechua and Andean-related materials (and other global indigenous resources), called Runakunaq Bibliotecanku (The People's Library). i highly suggest checking it out

This guy is my new hero. I LOVE learning about native food plants that just grow everywhere without human help.

The database is a little clunky to use (especially on a phone), but still loads of excellent information.

Here’s their website - Food Plant Solutions - and they can use volunteers! And $ of course. What they really need help with is connecting with NGOs/groups on the ground already working in countries, to get them access to the database. They also need help from formally trained agronomists, people good with website stuff, and people good at marketing / getting the word out about their project.

for anyone who didn't know, there's currently several wildfires ravaging british columbia. one of the most affected areas is the ʔaq̓am reserve. as of now, seven homes have been completely lost to the wildfire and it continues to rage on. thankfully no deaths have been reported so far, but the scale of damages is already huge and still growing. i can see the smoke from where i live, over 100km away. it's terrifying.

Holy SHIT. I just finished reading a related article, and y’all, this was so corrupt OTHER SFPD COPS ARE STANDING WITH THE KIDS.

Like basically their take is “yeah, some kids were being unruly. Y’all handled it ENTIRELY the wrong way and there is zero reason this should have happened.” There was an official meeting (I think like a monthly town hall kind of thing? I forgot to take note when I read it) and the cop who’s in charge of internal conduct investigation was there and he. Was. PISSED. And inviting parents and teens involved to give their testimony on the specifics of the rights violations they experienced so he could follow up and make full reports.

It’s like a normal library. Libraries can upload ebooks there and let people check them out through openlibrary if you have an openlibrary account, or it can point you to nearby libraries that have physical copies of the book for you to go and check out. If you check out books via openlibrary it counts towards the count of books checked out from the library that uploaded the ebook, and they can use it in their reporting and funding and stuff.

There’s like 150 libraries partnered with openlibrary so far.

They also have copies that you can check out if you are print-disabled.

You can also ‘sponsor a book’, which means you pay the cost of the ebook you want openlibrary to acquire, and then they can add it to their collection and let people check it out.
