The thing about BEEF is that it shows the distorted perception we have of others. George is so sure that Amy is no longer depressed because she now deals with “emotional stress” “much better”, especially after closing the deal. And yet, he fails to listen to her cries for help; he minimizes her car rage accident; he means well when he tries to rationalize what he can’t understand but it comes off as patronizing … He seems to be attentive and loves to prioritize communication, he desperately wants to be an open book… but he only opens up when it’s beneficial to him, yet he can’t deal with the burden of hearing someone else come clean. George doesn’t talk TO Amy, he lets the therapist talk THROUGH him. So when Amy decides to break the cycle and not keep secrets, withhold unspoken truths, like her parents did, George crumbles. He falls outside the control of a narrative he tried to shape. George never cared to ask whether Amy was happy unlike Danny who poses a question of genuine interest “are you fullfilled?” … George assumes everything is fine, because everything is fine to him.
