David comes across to me like the kind of kid that definitely fell for the war on drugs propaganda and has therefore been firmly against any kind of recreational drug since he was a kid and even believes weed is a "gateway drug." This is, of course, until Max becomes a stoner and he has to work through his own fears and anxieties to both 1. Protect His Son, and 2. Make sure to not alienate Max because of his new hobby
Of course, eventually he learns that weed really isn't that bad, and while he doesn't want to encourage breaking the law... once it's legalized, he finally gives in and lets Max convince him to try getting high... He has a blast, he's super giggly and cries over how much he loves nature. His first trip he finds a "family of ladybugs" and ugly sobs over how much they must love each other
"Yeah," Max said without heat. "I hate you."
He wished that he could believe it.
(He wished that he'd told the truth, instead.)
David laughed softly under his breath. "Okay, Max," he replied in a tone that said exactly how much he believed that. He reached down to ruffle Max's hair and was shrugged off.
