You know, the more I revisit levels in the Game Gear Sonic titles, the more I realize what awesome ideas a lot of the zones are.

Take Sonic 1 for example and Sky Base. An airship distinctly different from the sorts of sky fortresses the doc would later be infamous for and it’s combined with a floating metallic base.

Sonic Chaos also had an awesome zone concept in the form of Mecha Green Hill Zone. Robotnik goes and mechanizes an ENTIRE ZONE, transforming the soil, trees and even the flowers into machinery according to the JP manual.

Sleeping Egg is original in just how nondescript and bizarre it is, being set on a floating island with illusory elements.

Triple Trouble had Sunset Park, an abandoned amusement park-turned railway with the third act taking place entirely on a train. Robotnik Winter is an ice stage that shakes-up the snowy level concept by having it be entirely unnatural, the icy conditions caused by one of Dr Eggman’s weapon tests.

I can name more zones that feel incredibly original but I’ll just cite those most notable examples for now.

Reala I drew in the stream with @kaleidraws recently!  She did one too, and was far more successful in the “creepy” factor.

I’d like to actually play NiGHTS Into Dreams one day.

so i was on weibo and i found something interesting. the shinjuku breakup aka chapter 78 actually took place in one of most famous areas of old-fashion back alleys in japan, which is omoide yokocho (思い出横丁). omoide yokocho is referred to in english as the "memory lanes" of shinjuku, tokyo.
