My personal top 5 Billy and top 5 Steve portrayals in fic/art (mostly harringrove but not exclusively) because I’m travelling to Manchester tomorrow and I’m fucking exhausted

Top five Billy portrayals

Take me home tonight by @heck-in-a-handbasket Humanise. Sex. Workers. Billy is almost painfully real in this and he doesn’t take shit lying down. There are definitely upsetting scenes around Billy’s character in this but the end makes it extremely worth it and you can tell how much respect there is for the character in every page of this fic.

Lord Billy by @adelacreations I think we’ve all got Lord Billy brainrot atm but like I love Billy who’s just allowed to be a bit of a menace. Let him brood in a castle covered in blood. He’s earned it.

Serrated (again) by @shieldofiron (and that’s not just because Saf let me be Billy’s handwriting) Again this Billy doesn’t pull any punches and there are a lot of potentially upsetting scenes that he has to go through but you can tell how resilient Billy is and you’re cheering for him the entire way though.

Any of the tumblr ficlets by @hargrove-mayfields EJ has such a magical way of humanising particularly a disabled Billy that’s just incredible to read. He’s given the opportunity to leave Neil and heal with people who love him and it’s always a beautiful, heartwarming read.

There’s nothing wrong with me (loving you baby) by @toast-ranger-to-a-stranger again I like it when Billy is allowed to be a menace. This fic made me cackle the entire way through just at the absolute ridiculous nature of Billy’s antics.

And my top 5 Steve portrayals

Scottish Steve by @ratbastardbilly I have such a soft spot for Scottish Steve, probably because as a Northumbrian I live so close to Scotland myself, but there’s just something about Steve who’s allowed to really embrace his culture and is completely unapologetic in who he is. Also Italian Glaswegian Steve is just lush.

Any tumblr ficlet by @bigdumbbambieyes I know that I’m very much preaching to the harringrove choir with Bambi’s fics but I’m just so, so in love with the way she writes Steve and popular doesn’t mean that it doesn’t deserve individual recognition. I’m just obsessed.

Any tumblr ficlet by @thissortofsorcery I love how sweet Steve is in Gabi’s ficlets. He’s someone who clearly deeply cares about the people in his life, especially Billy and it’s a pleasure to watch him just exist in her world.

DJ Steve by @half-oz-eddie Ivy literally only wrote this yesterday but I am SO hooked on DJ Steve playing Duran Duran on the local radio

shout out to Heartstopper for not allowing Nick's sexuality get steamrolled in the name of avoiding awkwardness or some other crappy excuse. Thank you for allowing him to correct people because respect for his identity matters more than avoiding whatever awkwardness may follow the correction. I have seen too many occasions where bisexual people will just accept people calling them gay or straight out of the desire to not cause tension.

I don't give a shit if you thought it was repetitive or cringe or whatever the fuck when Nick would say "I'm bi, actually." As someone who has been out as bisexual for a good number of years, shit like that means the absolute fucking world to me.
