Lord Leviathan, coiled in the blackest depths of hell,

make my thoughts like the rushing river,

quick and cool.

King Leviathan, draconic heart of the great grey waves,

release my troubles as the bubbles of breath,

fleeting and fragile.

Great Leviathan, of silver eyes and night sky scales,

grant my heart the ocean tide’s serenity,

limber and reverent.

Grim Leviathan, He Who Knows the Labyrinth’s End,

let me love like your abyss,

fathomless and yawning.

the soothing prayer for leviathan

polarising fires and seas

raging within your chest

i come to you, mighty leviathan, pleading

that you put my drowning emotions to rest

they consume me, yet too, they burn me

under this weight i may break

with your grand talons, reach into me

the intensity please, leviathan, please take

take it away, help me let it go

so that joy, and gentleness

may once again, within grow

thank you for listening, lord leviathan.

Demon-Working Baby Steps

So I’ve noticed that a ton of people who are interested in working with Demons are not looking to set up huge summoning circles because they lack the space or the time. And that turns a lot of people off demons and things (if you’re not counting the whole “ahhh real demons” factor). So I wanted to list a few totally viable ways to work with demons without breaking out the chalk and hebrew.

  1. Their Sigil. Every single one of the demons listed in the Goetia have a sigil. This is used as a calling card, and very commonly used as a way to keep you and the demon on equal terms. If a sigil is worn during a summon, it is a sign of respect. The beautiful thing about this is you can use the sigil however the heck you want. As an example, a veterinarian wore the sigil of Camio to help her better understand her patients, as Camio is a demon that aids in animals.
  2. Metals, Colors, Elements, and Incense. Just like most other beings, Demons all come with correspondences! In the case of metals, many people will get either a disc or a piece of that metal and inscribe the sigil on it. if you’re like me and work with a King and don’t feel like getting a gold hunk of anything, you can paint clay gold, or something to the sort. In the Daemonolatry Goetia, Connolly lists with each demon a color, metal, element, incense, and even a set of dates they fall under. all of these can be used to dedicate to them.
  3. Demonic Enns. These are a set of sort of nonsense words created to help you get closer to the demon during summoning. I think these are best used for a simple evocation, especially when drawing out the sigil. they’re short, sweet, and easy to remember. Plus, you can get a PDF list of all of them for free!

those are the three simplest ways to start working with demons, but I’d say the most effective thing to do is to learn about the ones you’re drawn to. Does your demon love Science and the Arts? Maybe you could write them a poem and dedicate it to them. Do they have a form that may be easy to work with? Buy a trinket that reminds you of them and stick their sigil on/in it.

just because huge summoning circles exist doesn’t mean they are the only way to work with demons.

Demon-A-Day: Vepar

VEPAR – Duke

  • Color: Green
  • Incense: Sandalwood
  • Metal: Copper
  • Planet: Venus
  • Element: Water (Under Amaymon)
  • Demonic Enn: On ca Vepar ag na
  • Date (Connolly): May 11-20 (Night Time)
  • Date (Runyon): Oct 18-22
  • Archangel: Raphael
  • Origin: ?

Original Text from the Ars Goetia:

The Forty-second Spirit is Vepar, or Vephar. He is a Duke Great and Strong and appeareth like a Mermaid. His office is to govern the Waters, and to guide Ships laden with Arms, Armour, and Ammunition, etc., thereon. And at the request of the Exorcist he can cause the seas to be right stormy and to appear full of ships. Also he maketh men to die in Three Days by Putrefying Wounds or Sores, and causing Worms to breed in them. He governeth 29 Legions of Spirits, and his Seal is this, etc.

Other citations of note:

In an initiatory context, Vepar is a spirit who is of the Leviathanc Spirits, of the subconscious and water. In this, Vepar appears in dreams as a fluid-like gray mermaid who has deep blue or black eyes. Vepar may gather and guard servitors who go forth by the dreaming gnosis, and reveal secrets of the self long buried.

From the Luciferian Goetia by Michael Ford

Vepar is an excellent deamon to invoke if you want to explore your emotions or behaviors prior to making a change. Good for cursing toxic emotions as well.

From the Daemonolatry Goetia by S. Connolly

Vepar is a great water demon, and can ensure safety when you’re out and about in her domain. She can also work in more figurative affairs, and helping you understand your emotions and protecting you when you feel like you’re out in unknown territory. She’s also pretty good at keeping men away and at bay. She also goes by Vephar and belongs to no other demonic hierarchies.

Demonic Ranking System: Fabulously Dangerous

So she’s really into making men suffer, which is fabulous and all, but that probably means she could fuck you up if you mess things up. She’s great for keeping you safe and making you feel good, and also for fucking up other people. So, mess with at your own risk, and you should probably cover up any wounds with some festive band aids. Just in case.

A Witch’s Ingredients: Sand

Sand is an abundant resource that can be found across the world including along the coasts, through deserts and even in many people’s yards and gardens. Sand is rather easy to obtain and natural making it ideal for witchcraft. Though some types of sand may be harder to obtain, and more costly, than others, let this post be a guide on how to utilize it for its magical properties.

Types of Sand & Their Correspondences

  • Beach/Coastal Sand: calming, grounding, cleansing, connecting to the sea, self-love, protection and warding, motivation, memory, spiritual clarity, purification of the heart, easing pain, physical and spiritual strength, can represent both the elements of earth and water
  • Ocean Sand (from the ocean floor/deep sea): primordial energy, banishing negative emotions and energy, grounding, mental clarity, psychic clarity and strengthening, divination, guidance, ancient wisdom and power, connections to the sea and primordial waters, birth, creation, can represent both the elements of earth and water
  • Desert Sand: curses and removing energy from others, weakening, draining, banishing, grounding, mental clarity, physical health, enduring hardships, “drying up” love and past emotions, healing heartbreak, burying the past, often related to burial ceremonies
  • Volcanic Sand: destruction, intense energy, strength, death, rebirth, banishing, secrets or hidden messages, warding, baneful magic, offensive magic, often represents both earth and fire at once
  • River Sand/Silt: fertility, procreation, movement, flowing energy, travels, change
  • Lake/Pond Sand: the present, calmness, serenity, inner focus, self-reflection and meditation
  • Swamp/Wetland Sand: mystery, secret keeping, silencing lies and rumors, binding, curses related to becoming lost or emotional heaviness, often represents both water and earth at once, often related to animal magic specifically those that live in swamp land
  • Unearthed/Buried Sand: grounding, hidden power, addressing past issues and mistakes, overcoming controversy, self-discovery, introspection, emotional healing, moving on from past scars
  • Biogenic Sand/Bone Sand/Shell Sand: healing, moving on emotionally, remembrance but letting go of the pain and loss, honoring those lost (often at or to the sea), close connections to necromancy
  • Black Sand: protection, warding, banishing, relates to necromancy and spirit work
  • Pink Sand: love, beauty, youth, harmony, adjusting to change, remembering the past and lost loved ones, rebirth, emotional and mental healing, forgiveness of self and others
  • Red Sand: strength, courage, valor, relates to fire rather than earth
  • Yellow Sand: divination, focus, improving memory and skills, mental health, grounding and centering, represents both earth and air elements sometimes both at once
  • White Sand: purity, cleansing, protection, wisdom, preparing for change, physical and emotional balance, harmonizes all aspects of oneself

Combinations of Sand and Other Ingredients

  • Sand and Soil: grounding, balance, cleansing, protection of loved ones and family
  • Sand and Salt: change, growing power, dreams, purification, warding, protection, longevity
  • Sand and Ash: remembrance, the past, divination
  • Sand and Clay: change, mental fortitude
  • Sand and Kelp/Seaweed: beauty, youth, birth, fertility, the ocean

The History

Not much history on the use of sand in magic from what I can find that is a reliable source, but I was able to find some bits about its use.

Sand has been used in connections to rituals for the dead and in burial practices in many different cultures to a varying degree. In some sand was used for burying the deceased such as very early Ancient Egypt for its mummification properties before better mummification methods were invented and utilized. Placing sand into graves or coffins of the deceased somethings as a means to connect them to their homelands if that person was traveling into foreign lands or countries. Some stories speak about mixing the ashes of the dead with sand to be kept in the home. Other stories tell of people mixes ashes from fires or the hearth with sand and casting it out into the sea for lost sailors who could not be brought home.

Sand was also used historical in some types of spell jars and vessels. In some places sand was put into jars and bottles and given to sailors to keep them connected to home even when sailing. Others said carrying sand could protect one from being lost at sea or from disaster, likely where the history of sand being used for protection properties came from. It has also been used in witch’s bottles and for burying spells for varying purposes. Some cultures would bury offerings to deities into the sand of beaches or deserts.

Modern Use

Sand is still a common ingredient for many sea witches and worshipers of ocean related deities to utilize in their craft and in their altars. Deities commonly related to sand are Poseidon, Aphrodite, Psamathe, Thalassa, Aegir, Neptune and Veles. Sand is also often used in altars to represent either earth or water when representing the cardinal directions or the 4 elements. Some will use sand to represent both in cases of smaller altars.

Modernly, sand is often used in spell jars and bottles when used in spellwork or as a vessel to charge, cleanse and bury objects or tools such as crystals, poppets, amulets and trinkets. Sea witches or witches with accesses to large amount of sand will often use it for grounding and circle casting. Some will use it for runes and sigils as well.

Storing Sand

For those wishing to store and use collected sand ensure that there is nothing undesirable in it - garbage, sharp bits of glass, decomposing fish or animals, insects etc. Shift it thoroughly to ensure anything that could be potentially dangerous is removed and if needed properly disposed of. Once the sand has been shifted ensure it is dry before you seal it into anything.

Wet sand can house bacteria and mold - which can also smell quite foul when the container is opened again. You can use the sun to dry it or indoor heaters at a safe distance. Spread it out thin and flat to help ensure it is thoroughly dried if it is damp or wet.

Once dried the best way to store sand is inside of glass or ceramic vessels. Jars and bottles are the most ideal. Ensure that they are sealed tightly to ensure no spillage or condensation can get inside.

🕯 Jewish Entities 🕯

Many folks know that Judaism is a closed practice, but don't always know how to spot appropriation. Here is a list of Jewish entities that aren't shared with Christianity, meaning they are closed to non-Jews.* This list isn't fully-comprehensive, but I've marked some of the more popular ones. (For Jewitches, this could also be treated as a list for Jewish spirit workers who want to reclaim some of these entities as part of our own path!)

*Note: Some of these entities ARE shared with Islam (another initiatory tradition,) so they would still be open for our Muslim friends to work with but still restricted to the general public. Those entities are marked with an asterisk*.

Tips for landlocked sea witches~

☾ Thrift stores are a good places to look for sea shells or ocean related items, especially if you aren’t going to a beach anytime soon or you don’t want to purchase online. You never know what you might find! If you’re worried about bad energies that may come with your purchase, there’s always spells that you can cast to fix this.

☾ Can’t find any sea shells? Or any shells that speak to you? Items, even crystals, that remind you of the ocean count as well. This includes jewelry or even your favorite blue sweater! Whatever makes you feel closer to the ocean and your craft~

☾ If you’re curious about the closest tides near you and their high and low points each day, there’s a free app called “Tides Near Me” on the app store for your phone~ it’s pretty cool and simple.

☾ If you’re into moon phases, there’s also a free app called “Luna Solaria” and it gives you a pretty illustrated look at what’s going on up there. :)

Working with Water

Air rules me but so does water. I am split down the middle between the two. Water is chaotic and memorizing, and there is much you can do because it is one of the two elements that you can actually touch. Just like my other post, Working with Air, we will be exploring different ways that  you can connect more deeply with water. Enjoy dearies!

Here is a list of different ways to work with water:

  • We must drink water to survive, so when you are about to grab a glass of water (whether purified, tap, or bottled) before you pour it in your glass or before opening your bottle, enchant it by holding your hands around the glass/bottle (with your eyes closed or open) then say something along the lines as “I am one with the running waters of the Earth.”
  • Go to the beach. Collect seashells, rocks, and sand. Dip yourself in the ocean. Feel the powerful waves crash against you. NOTE: Be careful of any animals that live within the ocean, be respectful. Don’t collect anything that can be harmful for your health or illegal. EX. feathers
  • Showers are powerful. If you are one who likes to take showers in the morning, imagine the water energizing you for the day ahead and see yourself conquering all that lies before you. If you are one who likes to take showers at night, imagine the water rinsing off to cleanse you from long day you had and see yourself washing away everything so you are fresh and new. No matter what time you take a shower, allow the water to freshen up your spirits.
  • Baths are very calming and relaxing. When one cannot go to the beach, this is an excellent way to substitute. Fill the tub, surround yourself with blue/purple candles, seashells, and crystals that relate to water. Put in herbs or essential oils within your bath to connect you to the ocean waves of the deep, vast blue. Bonus, you can put on ocean sound music to set the mood. NOTE: Do your research, do not put in herbs or oils that are harmful to your health. Do not put crystals around the tub if they can be toxic or if they deteriorate in water. Your health is always most important.
  • When it is raining, go outside and let the rain fall upon you. Close your eyes and let the water cleanse your being. Then if you would like, play. Splash in puddles, run around. Enjoy yourself.
  • Make a sigil that means “I connect with the waters of the deep, beautiful sea.” or something along the lines. (Again, I am not a sigil maker but something I would like to include for others who are) Wear the sigil on you as you go to the beach or are working at your water altar.
  • Make a special water altar, preferably facing west. Fill it with mermaid items, chalices, colors of dark blues and purples, seashells, etc.
  • Research mermaids. Merpeople swim in the deep depths of the sea. They are beautiful, alluring, and mysterious. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any sources on how to communicate with them so here is a small list of ways I have personally used to connect with them.
  • Go to the beach, sit in front of the water and sing. Whether it is a mermaid song (like Jolly Sailor Bold) or your all time favorite song, just sing your heart out. If others are around you on the beach, sing quietly or have your headphones in. If you are alone, then sing as loud as you want.
  • Collect seawater in a jar, then when you get home make an oil using essential oils and herbs that mermaids love. Then before you go to sleep, take a small inhale, then fall asleep. Let the mermaids come to you in your dreams. NOTE: Do your research, do not use oils that will harm your health. This is more for aroma, not placing on your skin.
  • While you are at the beach, leave the mermaids small offerings that you feel they would enjoy. NOTE: Do not leave anything that is harmful to our environment, like jars filled with items. Be respectful to our Earth.
  • If you cannot go to the beach, take a bath and surround yourself with mermaid items; like statues, mirrors, seashells, etc. Fill the bath with herbs and oils that relate to merpeople then while you are bathing, sing. Look in the mirror if you would like, allow yourself to become one with them. NOTE: I don’t really care that I repeat myself so often but for real, do you research. Do not use herbs or oils that will harm your health.
  • Be careful as you would communicating with any kind of spirit. Protect yourself and be respectful while you contact.

Types of Witches series:  💦Sea Witches💦

Sea Witches are witches that mostly work with the ocean and its energy. You don’t need to be near an ocean to be a sea witch. Sea witches work with water (duh), salt, sea spirits, and anything with a water correspondence really.

a S E A W I T C H guide

💧 for those wanting to start out with sea witchery

Firstly a knowledge of the ocean and conservation efforts is essential. Basic books on marine life you can find at a library. For the actual magick part, I incorporate a lot of myths and legends into what informs my practice- sirens, mermaids etc.

🐚 pirate lore has helped me a lot as well with understanding the workings of ships and seafaring. Read up on Captain Kidd, Henry Morgan, Stede Bonnet, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

Now you’re probably like- this sounds lame what do old timey violent pirates have to do with sea witchery. You want to IMMERSE yourself in anything ocean themed. You’ll start seeing the imagery and items that will hold power for you- coins (pieces of eight), treasure chests (magick boxes), the idea of the name and figurehead of a ship being magickal, maps as magickal tools, sea shanties.

🐬Write and incorporate your spells into sea shanties and sing them. Listen to David Coffin for inspiration.

🐬Check out mariner’s knots on Pinterest and practice them. Knot magick is powerful and can be used for a lot.

🐬Lastly, collect shells, sand and sea water. Those are your bases for any spells. I like to grind up shells and use the powder. Shells can be used as spell containers or enchanted as charms. Sea water is used for purifying.

🐬Tap into the element of water. It’s ever changing and fluid. Take lots of baths and meditate. Have a dish with salt next to your bath and chuck in a handful as you run it. I’d suggest making a playlist of ocean sounds, harbor bells to play while meditating. (and cannon fire weirdly works for me too, I live in a coastal city where they fire cannons to tell the time a lot like in the olden days)

🐬Get you an oracle deck with mermaids or sea creatures. I love Magical mermaids and dolphins by Doreen Virtue.

🐬 There are a few apps you can get that track the tide. Plan your magick around the high or low tide. High for manifesting, low for banishing. Similarly, the moon pulls the tide so know your moon phases and meanings off by heart.
