They had not been seen together in the museum galleries for quite a while. Monet’s “Women with Umbrellas” are once again side by side in the Impressionist gallery.

The First Mourning, 1888, by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905)

The First Mourning, by French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau, depicts - well - the very first mourning. It shows the aftermath of the biblical murder of Abel by Cain. Here we see humanity’s very first experience of grief as Adam and Eve find their son’s body. They suffer from losing a loved one, and murder at that, a murder committed by their other son.
