it sucks to see Lucy consistently be let down by the people in her life while trying to fight this ‘illness’. She’s done nothing wrong but other people keep unknowingly putting her in harms way. Like, she didn’t remove the garlic flowers! She kept the window closed! But her mother took them away and opened the window while she was sleeping and couldn’t protest. it’s heartbreaking.
That's the whole of her story, in a sense. She does everything she can, but every time she falls asleep, other people juggle her life, without knowing or caring about the potential cost.
Sleep, for Lucy, acts as a hyper-exaggerated version of the way her society as a whole objectifies and dehumanizes young women. I'm sure the intended implications at the time were to the effect of, "watch this pure and innocent beauty be corrupted by deeply queer and foreign influence."
But what I take away from it now is the immense tragedy inherent in the fact that no one will tell her anything, "for her own good," so that even in waking she has little to no power to influence the events surrounding her.
The parallels to the "forced feminization" of Jonathan during his time in captivity with the count are numerous. But, at least for Jonathan, most of the barriers were linguistic, and his autonomy as a man travelling abroad meant he at least seemed to make the choices that nearly killed him. People tried to save him, but, he chose to ignore them, at least in part because of language barriers.
For Lucy, those barriers are so much more abstract. She is an unmarried young woman, so details of her medical care would normally go to her parents, for lack of a husband. But, her mother cannot receive them. So her doctors are left among themselves.
It never even occurs to them to explain the barest outline of treatment to her.
Imagine for a moment that Van Helsing tells fanciful young Lucy a story about Old Roman Medicine while hanging up garlic flowers. A bedtime story about garlic warding off evil spirits, and then kindly "modernizing" it to explain that actually garlic really keeps away "dangerous toxins and vapours."
Or that Jack tells the maids when he's talking to them about sitting up for Lucy, "Oh, be sure not to damage the flowers, they're part of her treatment. Latest medical science from the continent."
Or one of them leaving a note for Mrs Westenra that the flowers are by doctor's prescription.
But, whether awake or asleep, Lucy is treated as an object of care rather than a subject in her own right. And that is killing her.

Ah. Cool.
I’ve spoken to British defectors who paint a bleak picture of life in the beleaguered kingdom, citizens lead meaningless existences highlighted by mandatory bowing sessions to honor the nation’s tyrannical royal family. I plan to fly over the country dropping flashdrives full of jpegs of fast food menus to show those poor beleaguered serfs what they’re missing in the free world.
I once saw a video where a guy supposedly visited a fast food place in the united kingdom, but they were probably actors. It was just a show put up by the royalist authorities to mislead foreigners. Even the meals sounded fake and made up. “Smack barm pey wet”, c’mon now.
Wow that’s good to know

#my wife is on the SOR for being gay #no joke #she hit on a girl in a straight bar once #in 1997 #and while the girl was into it #the off duty cop sitting nearby was not #and so he arrested her for ‘soliciting homosexual activity’ #which in our state was still a felony #in 1997 (and would remain so until Lawrence v Texas in 2003) #and since ‘soliciting homosexual activity’ was a felony and a sex crime #she got put on The List #she is still on there to this day #because it costs MONEY to ask a judge to take you off #and she has tried four times#since 2003 #to get taken off the SOR #but every time the judge has said something like ‘no you pled guilty to the crime i can’t possibly take you off the sex offender registry’ #with no acknowledgement of what the actual crime was #(the crime of being a butch lesbian hitting on a cute girl who was into it) #(in 1997)

Younger queer people need to realize that the SOR being used against queer people simply for being queer isn’t some ancient history thing. It still impacts queer people today. And it can quite easily be used that way again.
So there are tiny slugs in my fish tank, and my fiancee and I watched as our betta fish Duck Newton moved from slug to slug. I don’t know whether he was confused or what, but he wasn’t touching them, just moving between them.
Dante and Virgil by William-Adolphe Bouguereau
@cosmic-navel-gazin reblogged this post this morning, and I’ve been thinking about its composition ever since. Namely how, if you had absolutely no context, you would assume that Dante and Vergil are the two illuminated figures in the center. You know, the focal point of the painting? And that was a choice, a deliberate and very interesting choice, especially in modern context if instead of Divine Comedy-related brain damage, you have Devil May Cry-related brain damage.
When in actuality, armed with context, you know that Dante and Vergil are the two motherfuckers standing in the background like

Stand Up & Fight Back
We recently had a similar situation in my area…some ignorant ‘Christian Mom’ and her posse went to a local school board meeting and did the exact same thing, but she included any member or supporter of the LGBTQ+ community in her defamatory rant. Thankfully, the board members took the time to carefully evaluate her comments and asked the right questions:
- How did you find out about these books?
- Have you read these books?
- Why should we remove these books from the school library?
The answers are always ‘online’, ‘no’, and, if it’s more than just a blank stare, a word salad of bad and grooming etc.
The board pointed out that parents had the ability to restrict what books their children were allowed to read within the school library system, and that was that. No banning allowed.
But they keep trying, and the next step is to get someone with similar ‘values’ on the school board. And THAT is why it’s so important to pay attention to your local elections and VOTE.
These fucks are the weeds and you, friends, need to make sure you they have no place to grow.
THANKS for the addition to this post @maeve-curry-writes.
