Secret Santa

“It’s your turn, Cas,” Dean says, doing his best to keep his grin hidden.

Castiel smiles and eagerly begins to sift through the pile of wrapped Secret Santa presents, searching for his own.  He finds it after a few moments, a little box, no bigger than his palm, wrapped in red and white paper. He glances at his friends who are all staring at him, Charlie, with her elf ears on, Sam with a pair of moose antlers, Jess and Bela, both in ugly Christmas sweaters, Ash, finishing up another beer, Kevin, sitting cross-legged on the chair across from him, and Dean, his boyfriend, smiling at him.  

His fingers tremble as he rips the paper, his heart skipping a beat when he realizes what he’s holding: it’s a ring box.  With a shaking hand, he opens the box and stares at what’s inside, a plain gold band, nestled on a soft, gray cushion.  When he looks up, Dean is in front of him on one knee, while everyone else waits with baited breath.  

“Castiel Novak, when I picked your name from the Secret Santa hat, I knew exactly what I wanted to get you,” Dean says.

“Dean…I…” Castiel’s voice trails off and he looks at Dean helplessly.  

“Cas, will you marry me?” Dean asks softly.

One thing I like about Pixar films is how the happy ending isn’t always what you think it’ll be. The toys don’t go with Andy to college, Gusteau’s restaurant gets closed down, Mike and Sully get kicked out of university, Carl never gets Ellie to Paradise Falls. But they find out that what they wanted isn’t necessarily what they needed, and I really like the fact that kids get to learn that life doesn’t always turn out the way they dreamed and that’s okay.

“It’s just a period. Stop being dramatic.”
