The CBC recently aired an undercover investigation into veterinary medicine.
I have been working in veterinary medicine for 7 years now, though I am not a vet. I spent five years at one clinic, about 8 months at another and I’ve been at my current place for about a year and a half. I’ve worked as...
This is a very long post about pet healthcare, but definitely worth the read.
Our new baby! He's staying with the in-laws until we move into our new apartment this August, and still needs a name. Isn't he super cute?
I saw a alert on the parrot forum and wanted to share, remember that when your cooking to not take any risk.
This just came from a member on another of my bird groups….. A lady at our club meeting yesterday brought in a box of the new Reynolds cooking bags made of aluminum and plastic made for the oven…They say you can use them up to 450…She used 2 bags at 375 for 40 minutes and after coming back 30 minutes later found her Amazon closest to the kitchen pumping for air and eyes were burnt from the fumes…Metallic fumes filled the air…There is no doubt this bird would have been dead in another 10 minutes…Other birds suffered eye irritations. She called the company and reported it and we will run this in our. Please post this where you think you may save birds lives…other pets and humans who want to save their lungs.

Did you know that the Aviator harness from parrot university offers free worldwide shipping? The harness also comes with a DVD that will explain how to introduce and harness train your companion parrot.
Aviators are the best, and safest, harness out there for parrots. Did you know many birds who fly away are clipped birds!? Clipping gives a false sense of security and I recommend this harness to anyone who wishes to bring their birds out and about with them.
Yesterday I took Rosie on a short hike with me, I’m so happy she can enjoy the outdoors with me :)
This is the kind of harness that Jeffrey has! It's lightweight and impossible to escape from, easy to put on (only two straps, one point of adjustment), and safe to wear with food in the crop (with many harnesses, the bird has to fast before wearing it).
Please always have a harness on your bird if you're taking it outside without a cage, no matter if it's clipped, inside a 4' fence, low wind, only for a second, etc. I see pictures on Reddit all the time of people with their birds outside with no harness and some excuse for why it's ok, and it makes me wince! When birds get startled, they fly first, think later. Even clipped birds can get enough lift to get themselves into trouble, and it only takes a second!
The weather was finally nice enough for an excursion!
Jeffrey was a little upset about the harness since she hadn't worn it much over the winter, but seemed to adjust pretty quickly. Now if only she'd learn how to fly in a circle instead of a line...
A still photo cannot adequately convey the misery these birds display in the shower.
They have hard lives.
Everyone is molting
- Get glass of lemonade
- Wait 2.5 seconds
- Glass is full of budgie feathers

Twinzy is a “half sider” budgerigar, also known as a parakeet. Probably one the of the best ever photographed. Twinzy has the characteristics of a blue bird on one side and a green bird on the other, even his tail feathers are split down the middle! He is on display at Rudy’s Pet Supply in Oklahoma City. Rudy’s is a full line pet store that specializes in birds. We are so very happy to have him as one of our in store pets. Please feel free to come visit him any time during normal business hours.
Is this a real mutation?
It's not a mutation, it's actually chimerism. It's extremely rare, because it requires that a single egg contains two non-identical twin embryos which then fuse together and make one organism. Crazy stuff!
The weirdest case I've ever seen was one who was actually a featherduster on his left half and normal on his right half-- he was able to survive for years because the featherduster was limited to only one side!
Everybody’s molting! D:
Not pictured: the cranky-butt molting cockatiel.
hey! i wanted to know how to tell the difference between a female parakeet and a male parakeet! can you help me??
You can tell by looking at their cere, the fleshy part of their nose. Males will have bright pink, purple, or solid blue ceres depending on their maturity. Females will have dull tan, brown, white, or patchy blue ceres with white around the nostrils. Hope that helps!
It's unseasonably warm today, so we put the boys in their travel cage and spent some time in the sun.
It’s been exactly one year today that we brought Dimitri home. His nose still isn’t blue, though, heh.
?????
So uhmm…. is it normal for your bird to just get horny out of nowhere on your shoulder??? This has never happened up until like the past couple weeks. He (which is actually a she) is two years old just about. Haha every time I’m just like OK IF YOU RUB YOUR BUTT ON MY FACE I WILL END YOU.
Sorry, I tried to answer, accidentally hit enter and RUINED EVERYTHING. So I'll reblog instead.
My Jeffrey (who is also actually a she) used to do this all the time too. It means she views you as her mate. Make sure you don't touch her back or vent area or you will encourage it, and that may lead to chronic laying.
You can discourage it by rearranging her cage and making sure she gets 12-14 hours of darkness every day. Cut back or eliminate any treats like seeds, chips, cereal, pasta, etc-- high fat/processed sugar content makes them go into breeding mode.
Wet budgies are so funny.
In which Isaac tries to take a bath in his broccoli.
The budgies surprised us by diving into some lettuce today. Isaac keeps picking it up, carrying it to the edge, and deliberately dropping it off the cage though-- I think we named him well.
