It's a rock. No indigenous life.

@therealkn / therealkn.tumblr.com

Name's David. I mostly just reblog random things I find and like (usually both). Also thinking I'm back.(Avatar by hikariyuushi)

I’m still here.

I’m gonna be honest. I haven’t had much reason to use tumblr anymore. I don’t have anything against the site or its users, I just don’t feel that same interest in this site anymore.

Don’t worry, I’m not deleting this blog. It’ll still be here, but I will be rarely active on it. I’m much more active on Twitter, so... here’s my Twitter.

If anyone wants to keep in touch with me elsewhere, I have a Discord. Message me if you want to add me there.

It’s funny. My blog uses a line from Aliens - “It’s a rock. No indigenous life.” - just to reference a movie I love. Now it will kind of fit that line. Funny in a messed-up way, yes?

guys its a wonderful life was literally such an anticapitalist masterpiece that the FBI claimed it was communist propaganda and under investigation they found the movie “deliberately maligned the upper class, attempting to show the people who had money were mean and despicable characters.“

in one scene the main character george bailey is vouching for someone trying to buy a house outside the slums & the antagonist mr potter is like “u need to stop filling their heads with impossible ideas, the working class needs to be thrifty” (all while hoarding an insane amount of wealth) and george slams him w this

he really said the rich view the working class as cattle and that bitch was right!!!!! say It louder!!!!!

So everyone who read or watched Fight Club and thought Tyler Durden was a cool dude.

(NOTE: He is not. Do not be like Tyler Durden. Do not idolize him or think he is cool at all. If you do think he’s cool, please seek help immediately. This is not a joke.)

a fools guide to not wanting to die anymore

by me, a fool who doesnt wanna die anymore

  1. never make a suicide joke again. yes this includes “i wanna die” as a figure of speech. swear off of it. actually make an effort to change how you think about things.
  2. find something to compliment someone for at least 4 times a day. notice the little things about the world that make you happy, and use that to make other people happy.
  3. talk to people. initiate conversation as often as you possibly can. keep your mind busy and you wont have to worry anymore
  4. picture the bad intrusive thoughts in youe head as an edgy 13 year old and tell them to go be emo somewhere else
  5. if someone makes you feel bad most of the time, stop talking to them. making yourself hang out with people who drain you is self harm. stop it.

… 8|

That’s some pretty good advice. I don’t know what’s left of my humor after ‘guess I’ll just die’ jokes but it’s worth a shot.

Personally i went from “guess I’ll die” jokes to “IF I HAVE TO BE HERE FOR 5 MORE MINUTES I PROMISE YOU I WILL BUY JUST, AN ARRAY OF CLOTHES.” and other wild hyperbolic stuff. Just replace the death part with something ridiculous and off topic. Its very entertaining

This also works with calling myself things like stupid, worthless, trash, etc. Even if you do this jokingly to yourself, your brain still believes it, and keeps up the cycle. Seriously, I found that when I stopped saying these things about myself, even jokingly, it made a massive difference.

Here’s a tip I picked up from a friend that’s helped me a lot — replace self deprecating jokes with ironically self aggrandizing jokes

Like every time I trip and fall, instead of saying “l’m just a disaster human” I say “I’m the epitome of grace and beauty”

Or like, when I draw a picture I’m not 100% happy with, instead of saying “my art is trash” I say something like “you know I think it’s time we replaced the Mona Lisa”

When you do that you get to make a joke, but you’re ALSO getting practice building yourself up, y’know?

And eventually it becomes a reflex and you get so used to it that you can say nice stuff about yourself even when you AREN’T joking

This is so important

That self-aggrandizing technique is no joke.

I replaced “I’m stupid” with “I’m a God damn genius.” “Move over newton” “another masterpiece”

I replaced “gross/ disgusting” with “sexy/attractive” “the hight of elegance”

I replaced “I suck/ that sucked/ this is bad” with “fantastic”, “a lovely time”, “ swell/jolly good”

Replace every negative with a positive. Say it so sarcastically. Make it complicated make it entertaining have fun with it.

It will stop your self deprecating and build confidence. And people are more easygoing around you.

Original Power Rangers Samurai Proposal

Today from the archives comes my unused early rough plan for how to adapt the Samurai Sentai Shinkenger season of the Japanese Sentai series for US television as Power Rangers Samurai.  Created independently and prior to the official production of the show its fate until now has been just to gather virtual dust in a virtual file.  It is presented here for educational purposes and a glimpse into a world of “what if?”

While Shinkenger had many elements that appeal universally it was also a distinctly Japanese story involving elements from Japanese history and culture which might limit its appeal to western audiences without some skillful adaptation and smoothing over.  In the summer of 2010, the original producers were back in control of the Power Rangers franchise and looking to adapt Shinkenger for American and international audiences.  Luckily for them they knew a writer they could call who spoke Japanese, had a degree in East Asian Languages & Cultures, grew up watching the show as a fan, and had even worked on the show as its head writer.  So after getting the call, I shaved my beard and left my mountain refuge for civilization again to find a computer or TV to binge through the 50 or so episodes of Shinkenger in a couple days and come up with a rough plan on how this could be adapted for the US before meeting with the producers.

This sounds way cooler and more interesting than the Samurai series we got. I get that the show was kind of a rush job, and that Jonathan Tzachor apparently just wanted to do a more direct adaptation of Shinkenger and that his adamant fixation on keeping as close to the original Sentai series as possible caused problems both for this season and Megaforce (ESPECIALLY Megaforce), but even then, it would have been really damn cool to see this get adapted, if at least as a comic book, kind of like how they did a comic based on the original script for Star Wars.

Just a heads up, the video in question is 2.5 hours long but totally worth it.

HOWEVER if you want a tl;dr

  • Simba is named Simba because it’s Swahili for lion. Kimba is named Kimba because they thought “Simba” would be too hard to trademark and would be too generic.
  • Kimba the White Lion is a manga that was adapted into multiple seasons/versions + several movies. As both TLK and Kimba take place in Africa, there’s a limited “palette” of animals that either artist could pull from when making a movie about African animals. What this means is that sometimes the same animal is used in an episode of Kimba, but that doesn’t mean much due to the amount of Kimba there is + the “palette.”
  • For example, in both Kimba and TLK there’s a warthog. In TLK, it’s Pumba, in Kimba it’s a character that only shows up in a couple of episodes, is a child (?), is a noted coward, and has a masochism kink. No joke; an actual clip of the show has him see a monkey mom spanking her monkey baby, and asking to also be spanked.
  • HOWEVER if you just saw a picture of the two warthogs side by side with the note “and both series have a warthog!!” without context to the amount of weight given to the characters in each story, you could see why they’d be thought of as “similar”.
  • A lot of the comparisons are just like… Tropes. Like “Simba has a love interest who is also a lion. This is a rip off of Kimba” level of tropes. (Spoilers: characters having love interests is actually super common.)
  • Kimba on cliffs/fighting on cliffs/pride rock looking things is super common, and the video even has a multicut of several times this happens.
  • Kimba just carries around the corps of his dead dad, and sometimes wears him. This is not something that occurs in TLK.
  • Kimba contains humans, TLK does not.
  • Kimba…. contains very racist depictions of humans. It’s really really bad.
  • Kimba also has a really blatant pro-colonization stance? Kimba really wants to make the animals “civilized” (which includes everyone being vegetarian, I guess.)
  • “Africa is changing. The continent is coming of age. The people must say goodbye to devil’s masks and voodoo drums. That was all part of the past on the dark continent.“ <- Actual Kimba quote
  • Also a Kimba quote:
  • “Kimba, your fur is white because you come from a long line of great leaders.”
  • “I hope I can be like my ancestors as well as look like them.”
  • To be clear, I’m not saying TLK is perfect - see, the number of white voice actors for example, but like… It’s definitely a #yikes, and something to keep in mind when you see comparisons.
  • The alive “father” figure that you see in some of the clips is not the supposed Mufasa parallel, but rather from a sequel series where Kimba is grown up; more analogous to Simba in the sequel.
  • He is also an abusive father.
  • A lot of the more blatant comparisons between the two, when it comes to side-by-side comparisons, actual come from the movie Jungle Emperor Leo which came out in 1997, three years after TLK.
  • At the end, the creator of the video “compares” Kimba The White Lion to a 1940s comic called Simba: King of Beasts that “proves” using out of context imagery that Kimba is a rip off of KoB
  • Obviously, the actual video goes into a lot more detail; again, it’s 2.5 hours long, but if you’re not up for watching it, here’s a tl;dr?

additional tl;dr look, I’m not saying Disney is a good company, just that “TLK ripped of Kimba” is incorrect.

ok but if bruce wayne somehow came upon zuko fresh out of banishment he would lose his mind.

black hair? check. bad parent(s)? check. trauma? double check.

bruce: how’d you get your scar?

zuko: my dad got mad at me for saying that killing people is wrong so he lit my face on fire and banished me.

bruce, vibrating with excitement, already pulling adoption papers from his utilility: that’s terrible. how do you feel about capes.

Zuko: Do you mind if I wear this blue demon mask?

Bruce: *sniff, tear in his eye* Not at all.

*Zuko fighting the Joker*

J: "wan na kno w h ow i go t thes e sc ar s"

Z: *rips off mask* i don't give a fuck

I’m still stuck at the “batman has adoption papers in his utility belt”.

“Quick, it’s time to use the Bat-adoption papers!”

Bat-option papers

Okay, but you’re missing the best part of this.

Alfred and Iroh complimenting each other on tea while they discuss their overly dramatic children.

iroh: once, i told zuko that he needs to work on his inter turmoil. he screamed at me that he had no such inner turmoil, and then proceeded to go to a cliff during a thunderstorm to scream at God to strike him with lightning

alfred: master bruce and i have that interaction at least three times per week.

@absentlyabbie

I see your "Alfred and Iroh as tea bros" and raise you "Alfred and Iroh as tea rivals"

Consider

Iroh: you too must learn patience. Boiling the water ruins the delicate flavor of the white jade
Alfred: oh I'm dreadfully sorry - for some reason I expected this tea to have TEA in it

(later)

Alfred: *aggressively laying out full tea service with milk, lemon, sugar, and, just to drive his point in, jam*
Iroh: *dying inside*

excellent addition

hey bruce spent a lot of his bat-study abroad in the far east and has kind of a weeb weapon collection so proposal, what if Bruce appreciates Iroh’s tea

while Zuko is enthusiastic about cream and sugar

further fueling their dad-figures’ passive-aggressive rivalry?

You had me at Zuko vs. Joker, I was crying by the Eastern vs. Western tea service

Wait a minute. Batman and Zuko have the same arch-nemesis.

Mark Hamill

Why do I keep losing things? Aka Nothing good has ever come from trying to "just not forget"

Honestly - ALL OF THIS

I'm going to start focusing on sounds and saying steps aloud and see if it helps! Thank you as always for your lovely comics! I appreciate them all!!

A few Solstice photos for Tumblr from last night. I went for a walk at about 10:45pm and took a few pictures from the hills. The sunset ended around 11:10pm. It felt old on the hills, which are, I read once, the oldest exposed rocks in the world, apart from the Himalayas.
