Sometimes I feel like there’s a hole inside of me, an emptiness that at times seems to burn. I think if you lifted my heart to your ear, you could probably hear the ocean. The moon tonight, there’s a circle around it. Sign of trouble not far behind. I have this dream of being whole. Of not going to sleep each night, wanting. But still sometimes, when the wind is warm or the crickets sing… I dream of a love that even time will lie down and be still for. I just want someone to love me. I want to be seen. I don’t know. Maybe I had my happiness. I don’t want to believe it but, there is no man, Gilly. Only that moon. Practical Magic (1998) dir. Griffin Dunne

Wow this really got shared around & i’m telling any of y’all who haven’t seen a league of their own yet: these aren’t just background characters. They aren’t butches you see hanging around as queer rep set dressing. These women, especially Lupe (left) and Jo (center) are MAJOR characters on the show with major arcs and the three of them (including Jess on the right) are shown adored for their butchness, admired, lusted after. And they are proud, they are confident, they are portrayed with a whole palette of emotions. They can get fired up on the field but are so gentle and loving too.
It’s so beautiful to see. They’re so beautiful to witness. It’s not primarily a show about baseball. It’s primarily a show about us.
“I’ll tell you something, I wrote this particular scene at 2 o’clock in the morning in my kitchen and I wrote ‘age of the geek, brother’ and I started crying at my counter. It was one of those moments where I’m like, am I really writing this scene?” - John Rogers, The Long Goodbye Job DVD Commentary
Lots of people think the opposite of patriarchal messaging is "actually, men are bad and women are good"
When in reality, the opposite of patriarchal messaging is "there is no immutable difference between a man and a woman and no trait belongs only to one group or the other. Goodness or badness is entirely individual and not tied to gender in any meaningful way"
might i add-- everyone is capable of doing good or bad things, but neither goodness nor badness are intrinsic qualities
^^^
This is an excellent addition.
Patriarchy is not about the individual but about structures of power. Individual women can uphold those structures just as much as men can. Individual men can be harmed by those structures of power just as much as women can.
Patriarchy is as much about social class as it is about gender.
listen i know sense8 ended a while ago but just imagine for a moment that you are rajan rasal. you have sent your wife away to paris, knowing that this may irreparably harm your relationship, because there are credible threats against you for cooperating in a corruption investigation. some time passes. you go to france to see your wife when you can, to hopefully work things out. you've been getting some weird communication from a medical organization looking for her, but she's a biochemist so that isn't that weird, right? you show up at the apartment you bought for her. first thing you see is another man walking down the hall in nothing but a towel. is she cheating on you? then you see a woman chopping something in the kitchen. is she super cheating on you + whoashesbisexualididntknowthat.jpg? next you see a large group of people with some intense computer set up and weird conspiracy board. a man comes up to you and addresses you by name and with a very friendly tone but he's speaking swahili (you don't speak swahili. does your wife speak swahili?) you mention the medical organization that contacted you about and one of the strangers pulls out a gun. you are given a microscope. your wife tells you that people are trying to kill her but they are different people than the ones trying to kill you. you are escaping across the rooftop when a couple of the group run back inside and the man your wife had been holding hostage escapes. you go back inside shortly thereafter to find a bunch of unconscious police. the rest of the group prepares to leave. no one has explained anything to you. this all happens in about ten minutes.

So much new blood at these days, pretty soon the people who never knew Shay are gonna outnumber those of us who did. And they should know whose shadow they’re walking in.

Still can’t believe that this same man had to sit next to someone who could only say “My favorite thing about the movie is that it feels like a movie”…
“Sorry this chapter is late!! I spent the last few days trying to find a laptop charger in the zombie horde wastelands, you know how it is. Anyway, as always, betaed by sasukesass52, who spent all her designated wifi time in the bunker screaming at me on discord, so I know all of you will love this chapter and the next. Enjoy~”
I finally watched Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears and it’s terrible.
There are some fun beats like her dropping the note to move the tea trolley but on the whole it’s both too slow and too dull.
The thing that made the series work was the ensemble and leaving most of them in Australia and introducing new characters who are only lightly sketched just doesn’t work.
I love a bit of Rupert Penry Jones but his character was so underwritten that I didn’t care about the ending.
And the orientalism wasn’t undercut enough despite them trying to show how the British fucked up Palestine
