Name's Justin.

In case anyone is wondering, I’m still here. Just haven’t been on much. Mental health really gets you at times.

Life in a drop of pond water

The worm-like critters are single-celled ciliates called Spirostomums, distinguishable by the clear contractile vacuole at their posterior end. It can sometimes take up nearly half of the cell body.

Watching them move around is pretty mesmerizing, with their twitchy movements resembling a robot of some kind. They seem to follow a movement pattern of

1. Swim in straight line

2. Bump into thing

3. Back up a bit and move a bit to the side

4. Still bumping up into thing? Repeat step 3

There’s various other microbes as well, such as rod-shaped bacteria, paramecium, and some decomposing Spirogyra. Can you see the helical chloroplasts in the algae?
