It’s a neutral ship for me– can read if it’s in a fic, not exactly something I’ll go and look for. They both have very intense feelings towards Bruce so they’ve got that in common… but at the end of the day those emotions are towards Bruce, not each other. I’ve never really gone for the “oh, we both like/hate character A so we should get together” ships so I’m a bit biased here! On paper, things look decent: there’s that good boy/bad boy thing, ship hotness (20-30 y/o handsome men with Jay being physically brawnier than pretty boy Dick), and their personalities are surface-level compatible. Dick’s flighty, free-loving nature is often paired with Jason’s domestic, headstrong personality in fics.

Personally, I’m just not excited about it! I’ve always thought Dick’s a “good” kid only because he finally grew out of his rebellion and made up with Bruce. Jay’s still stuck in the rebellious phase, which makes sense since he’s 5-6 years younger than Dick. So they’re not opposites so much as at different points in their life, and part of why Dick is hopeful is because he’s been where Jason is. It’s an understanding I’ve always seen as more of a platonic/familial vs shipping thing? Canon wise, Jay’s more often seen with Timmy or with the whole fam rather than with Dick alone, especially post-death (there were some cute moments where they teamed up during Jay’s Robin days.) I need my ships to be personal, not one-person-removed! Bruce’s shadow is everywhere when it comes to how they see each other and it’s hard to gauge their actual feelings with the Bat flying around.

I do think there’s room to play around here, especially with Jay’s Robin days spent admiring/envying Discowing. There’s just less to work with than it would seem. It’s a good challenge for sure, and I’ve definitely read a few Jaydick fics that really impressed me with how convincing their relationship was! At the very least, JayDick is hot to look at. I’m not blind, Jay’s very handsome! Dick’s very handsome! Handsome gay men are handsome!!! Hope this makes sense!

It’s So Complicated. I’m adding on to what I covered in my Jaydick answer: basically, that self-made families don’t have to follow societal expectations, that relationships change over time, and the importance of freedom in exploring difficult or awkward topics in fiction. This got so long I had to put it under a cut, omg.

Not sure, must see how S3 turns out! For now, it’s def my fave ship to come out of Young Justice S2. It’s not that Cassie/Timmy is 100% out of nowhere but we spent so little time on either of them that their get-together later was like “…who? …so???” S2 had a huge problem with this in general. Waaay too many characters and way too little time. If you’re not up to speed on the comics, the disorientation is even worse.

Both Jaime and Bart got a lot of screen time so I think it makes sense for their ship to have more traction. They’ve got good bonding scenes, excellent I-came-back-from-the-future-for-YOU vibes, and genuine concern for each other ala Bart literally being in the operating room when trying to remove Khaji Da and Jaime’s not shying away as usual despite Khaji Da’s increasing MUST MURDER HIM rants. They’re a classic opposite-attracts combo. Jaime’s patient and flexible enough to go with Bart’s jokes, but also responsible enough to know when to reel Bart in. Bart reminds Jaime how a superpowered kid can still have fun, enjoy their powers, and actively be a part of the YJ team instead of standing on the sidelines as a weirdo forever. The other members seem to treat Jaime like he’s crazy and never seem to bother actually asking what he’s doing (which seems to be fine for Jaime, who’s always struggling to control Khaji Da anyway). Bart, even knowing the traitor thing, actually… treats Jaime like a normal teenager? And Jaime lets him?? Maybe because Bart’s fast enough to run out of the way if the plasma cannon ever comes out???

So even if you don’t ship it, I think they have a fun, solid friendship. Mixing in comics canon makes for even more interesting interactions (and possibly explains why Jaime is so patient with Bart– he’s actually pretty close in age to Jaime’s bratty sister, Milagro.) They’re a ship that doesn’t exist anywhere else in DC verse but is definitely a combo that was my highlight of YJ S2.

Lex’s character shifts so much across canons (and in some he’s truly a Huge Jerk) which is why my preferred Clex is definitely the Smallville version.

Early Smallville Clex holds such a soft spot in my heart. Just… the show’s portrayal of their practically magnetic attraction to each other and then their downward spiral into Breakup Hell is so tragic. It gives Lex a better motivation than “Oh, I’m just a greedy businessman and I hate aliens because I’m racist” and it really helps round out Clark’s perfect do-no-wrong character (by pointing out his many character flaws lol). It makes their fighting personal. So many misunderstandings and Clark being a Dumb Dense Teenager and an ACTUAL REASON Lex hasn’t really died yet because come on, he can fight but it’s not his specialty. His meteor mutation being accelerated healing is brilliantly subtle.

It also says a lot that even in current canon, the two have been shown to work together pretty well. Lex’s obsession with Kryptonians plus his genius means he’s uniquely qualified in helping Superman reach his full potential (shown in Nightwing: New Order and some other canons.) Part of the tragedy is that, if Clark had trusted Lex a bit more, Lex would have been an invaluable ally. I’m glad Injustice actually explores this a bit with Clark and Lex still being friends and Lex becoming his right hand man. Even if he betrays Clark for going off the deep end, this is a Lex who was instrumental in Clark’s ability to take over the world.

So yeah, I’m a sucker for the once friends, now enemies trope (re: Charles/Erik, the best frenemy ship comics has created). Add Conner into the mix, combine a few Smallville canons with the Young Justice Cartoon and some 90s comics… and you have a great fic-writing storm. Clark might be the hopeful beacon of the Trinity but he still becomes irrationally pessimistic when it comes to Lex redeeming himself; and Lex is a brilliant entrepreneur whose business sense doesn’t stop him from wasting millions of dollars building machines to shoot Superman out of the sky. Years later and the fight is still Personal. So much angst and confusion, I love it.

I can talk forever but Clex + Conner is something I did explore in my Timkon comic, RSVP.  Hope this convoluted mess puts into words my thoughts!

I’m not sure! The minimum order for book printing is 25 books. So far there’s only been a few people asking me this so I’m not sure if I can afford it if the remaining 20+ books don’t sell?

It isn’t my thing! For some reason I can neutral-read Robin ships right next to each other in order (JayDick, JayTim, TimDami) but skipping a Robin just activates some squick feeling in me (DickDami, DickTim, JayDami)??? Not 100% sure why it is but it happens! Filters are a girl’s best friend, yah.

There is some interesting potential with Jason’s and Dami’s simultaneous time spent in the League of Shadows (when Dami was a baby!) They’re both ex-villainous boys who’ve been brainwashed by Talia fucking Al Ghul and even now still struggle with following the Bat’s no-killing code. There have been times when the other Bats aren’t sure if they should treat them as heroes or villains. They have a lot in common! Personally, I’ve always viewed this as a good Jason and Damian brotherly bonding moment to act as a foil to Dick and Damian’s bonding. Jason’s the cool brother and Dick’s the mom brother. Grayson might be Damian’s favorite but Jason gets it.

(It also doesn’t help that I don’t hardcore ship Dami with anyone right now… no matter how old he gets he’s still a 10-year-old brat in my head and keeps having typical 10-year-old crushes in my headcanons;;; I can’t even write adult!Damijon porn because they’re STILL KIDS IN MY HEAD AGGH)

Another neutral ship for me– not something I look for but a ship I find in a lot of the fics I read. The only Jaydick headcanon I’ve played with is unrequited Robin!Jay crushing hard on Discowing and feeling sad that Dick won’t acknowledge him (because he’s focusing all his attention and anger on Bruce instead.) Because I like my boys to SUFFER.

Obviously inner batfam ships get some people upset. My attitude’s always been to filter out any that I don’t really want to read (because everyone has their squicks and their own headcanons) but just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean no one else should. The beauty of fiction is that you can write characters however you want, write relationships however you want, explore topics that are uncomfortable but in a safe environment with characters who are, you know. Fictional.

And the Batfam just lends itself to ambiguity anyway. It’s the whole point of the Batman Brand re: is Batman a hero or a thug out of control? Part of being a self-made family means no one has to abide by “normal” familial rules. There’s a LOT of gray area here, especially in the early batfam days when everyone’s roles were a lot less defined. People and relationships are complicated and expecting everyone to follow “appropriate” rules for what a family should be just isn’t realistic. Even more so when Dick and Jay didn’t even grow up together (a real psychological thing that causes sibling feelings btw) and all that linked them for a long time was a piece of paper. And even then Bruce hadn’t adopted Dick yet, so even with that piece of paper Jay still wasn’t his brother. Do you see what I mean??

I also think it’s important to understand that relationships change over time. Sure, Dick’s settled into a clear Older Brother role now (after years of Jason dying, mentoring Timmy, Bruce Dying, Damian arriving, etc.) but that doesn’t mean he has to be a big brother from the get go. It’s the same way with Bruce and Dick’s relationship. There are clear moments in their history where things could have shifted one way or the other re: Dick’s adult adoption.

Basically, I can read and enjoy situations with the Robins as brothers and treating each other that way. But I can also equally accept JayDick happening with Dick’s not-yet-established-brother role during Jay’s Robin run. It’s like viewing the two as part of a multiverse– one verse in which they settled down as brothers, another verse in which Jay’s UST jumpstarted their ship. They exist side by side as parallel universes! If vampire!Bat can exist alongside comic!Bat, these can too!

Awkward relationships happen in real life. Shojo manga has taught me that adopted/step relationships are even more awkward and pretending it isn’t helps no one. And if that’s something that really squicks you out, that’s perfectly fine! I have squicks too. Thankfully, AO3 has exclude tags now so it’s easier than ever to really filter things out. I hope this longass rant on batfam dynamics makes some sort of sense.

I AM ON A SHIP ANSWERING ROLL TODAY

Dick is the fandom bicycle for a reason lol he’s a hot young 20-30 something with his fingers in a lot of pies. He’s my fave so I don’t mind fic/art of him being shipped with everyone under the sun. Birdflash is an okay best-friends-to-lovers ship that seems to focus on “Dick’s a sweetie who deserves a sweet and goofy bf like Wally.” Not my preferred type only because I’m evil and I prefer ships that show off how dysfunctionally functional Dick is. He’s not as bad as Bruce but still doesn’t care about what “normal” should look like. I think with Wally, that might be a problem? Like, an entire worldview-doesn’t-jibe problem??

My exposure to Wally is mostly through the cartoons (Young Justice and JLU) so take my interpretation with a grain of salt. I’ve always gotten the vibe that Wally really, really craves/needs normal. He wants a girlfriend like any normal sixteen year old. He wants a normal family like Barry’s instead of the abusive one he’s stuck with. He wants to find Linda again and go back to his normal life with his kids because he worked hard to get them to that point, dammit. And Dick, being a Bat, is Very Not Normal. Which is fine as friends, but might not work as domestic bfs.

(Plus, the Flash family generally acts as the reasonable ‘okay, that was insane, you’re all insane, I want to go home to my wife and dog now’ voice of the Justice League. Maybe because I find their marriages with their wives cute? Because I like their kids? WHO KNOWS.)

But that’s just my interpretation! Birdflash’s got some good canon backing from their Teen Titans and Titans run (knew each since they were teenagers, clearly close friends who like to banter, call each other out like good bros do.) Wally reminds Dick that it’s okay to act his age for once and Dick is good at supporting Wally through the morally gray decisions that come with the job. Like, Gotham eats Central City/Keystone City villains for breakfast. It’s a cute, wholesome ship I don’t mind finding in the middle of a fic. Hope that answers the question;;

Superbat is ok! Won’t go out of my way to look for it but don’t mind if it’s in a fic or art I like. All the Trinity ships are pretty solid (superbat, wonderbat, superwonder) and have lots of canon backing in diff dc media. I can see the appeal of the sunny supers + grouchy bats and they do have a mom/dad thing going on with the justice league (with Diana playing the cool aunt).

The biggest hurdle for me is their locations. Each are so strongly tied to their cities that the moving in part of the ship becomes very awkward. Bruce is definitely not leaving Gotham, and while Clark could probably fly from Gotham to Metropolis every day and night, it seems like a huge hassle. Also, Clark doesn’t seem to like Gotham’s gritty smoggy air very much (he’s a country boy, ok? Their city switch arc really cemented how out of place they feel in each other’s cities.) It’s a problem I run into with TimKon too, but Tim is enough of a middle child that he can do whatever he wants and Conner is the estranged son who grew up in Hawaii and doesn’t really care about where he is. They’re secondary family members, not the head of their households! I guess superbat can carry out their fling on the neutral ground of the watchtower? A romantic work relationship but not a domestic one? It’s an interesting problem to explore, and I’ve read some fics that do address this issue!

Personally, I like them best as friendly coworkers aboard the watchtower who bitch to each other about their kids. Probably why I liked their super sons arc so much! Bruce is a dysfunctional workaholic while Clark is a more traditionally optimistic hero, and the two have work styles (strict vs. empathetic) that complement each other well when wrangling the justice league. Diana is the balance between them— she’s the practical backbone behind superbat’s opposing idealisms. Especially when they fight (like in those canons where Bruce seems very luthorish with his anti meta and anti alien thing) but ppl do love a good enemies-> lovers arc I suppose ;)
