that’s the thing is that the lyctor cav surname naming convention came from cythrea taking loveday’s name because she had absolutely nothing left of them that she had not subsumed into her own being. John takes the name gaius because it’s not the earth that’s his cav, it’s the earth he has created in his own image, the one that required he destroy everything that previously existed.
He wasn’t following the convention, he doesn’t WANT to remember the billions of people he killed and subsumed. he was claiming the earth belonged to/WAS him, which is why he disliked when the lyctors did it because they were asserting not only their own identity outside of god/ the first, but that the people they consumed to get there were human and mattered.

personally, if i sacrificed myself for a girl who is both the love of my life and my worst enemy so she could live, and then i thought she had been so disgusted by my grand gesture that she ate my soul and then lobotomized herself to forget i did this, but i still had to lovingly take care of her body, and then i found out i was conceived as a weapon and my mom hated me and my dad was an evil all powerful emperor, and btw i was dead the whole time,
and then my dad, INSTEAD OF BRINGING ME BACK TO LIFE JUST TRAPPED ME IN MY CORPSE and made a hole in my chest so he could put teeth around my heart and make me a weapon, because i am always a weapon and that is all i am good for, killing and dying, and also he disrespected my butchness to make me some flowery long haired prince-maiden and re-named me without asking me, and then i was instructed to lay a trap for the love of my fucking life (who tossed me aside, remember?)

I just keep thinking about how Gideon pulled the ultimate orphan swerve- “My real parents will come for me someday, and then you’ll all be sorry!” And her real dad is God and he made her a prince and gave her any material desire and she came back to show them all, but in her heart of hearts, she knows it’s just as hollow as the satisfaction that didn’t come from killing Crux.
ianthe is ironically much more sympathetic than john because she is constantly performing and flaunting how unsympathetic she is. she is performatively cruel and openly petty and puts on a big show of being bored and dismissive of morality and kindness. whereas john is just as cruel and vindicitive of a guy but he is constantly backpedaling and sanitizing and making excuses at every angle until it suits him to stop. ianthe will tell people to their face that her love is selfish and transactional but john wants you to think he’s doing you a favour by killing you
