It’s the fact that so much of the story is about Dream trying to connect with humanity, when he’s just like, three neurodivergences in a trench coat. He’s got the human brain-weirds!
Like, “oh here’s this anthropomorphic realization of a universal constant struggling to understand the nuances of human communication even though he has crippling empathy!” And I’m like! Bitch that’s autism! I am waving to him like the guy in the ‘same hat!’ meme!
And I love that I get to discover for the first time with such joy what so many people have already known!
God ok... in the scene when Roderick dies, Dream immediately stands up and reaches out to Alex. He looks hopeful. Dream remembers when Alex said that if he could free him, he would, and well, the man who kept both of them under his thumb for the past ten years is now dead. There's nothing standing in his way.
And Alex is about to go through with it, before he gets talked out of it. He says he needs to think about it. I think... before that moment, Dream might've been willing to just go on his way and leave Alex alone. But that moment, when Alex officially becomes an active participant in his imprisonment, I think that moment is when Dream decides he can’t forgive him. That second betrayal is when he determines (correctly or not) that Alex is just as bad as his father.
What kills me about this scene is that Alex doesn't turn back until a guard asks "What would your father say?" Which I think is a huge part of why Dream reacts the way he does.
