Downgrading my blogging standards since 2010

If you went by what you see on TV you’d think the nation was gripped in a collective outpouring of grief and.. it isn’t! No spontaneous flower tributes, no black armbands. People are just getting on with their lives. The only public displays are by brands and businesses.

Look at the number of flowers in town today under the queen statue. They’ve optimistically set the barriers far back anticipating thousands. There’s about 15. There was no one there paying their respects either. Literally no one. The biggest queue was at a burger van nearby.

as a comparison, this was Kensington Palace after Diana died:

Reblog to make Lizs ghost furious

Pretty much everyone said this would happen. One ticked off parent can throw a tantrum and get any girl investigated because their kid didn’t win. Gross.

I know everyone has different opinions on the monarchy, but it’s really disappointing to see so many people acting in bad taste. Can all of the people who are NOT celebrating queen elizabeths death please START.

I think he’s serious.

i say we lean into this. republicans only operate on knee jerk culture war reaction logic these days, so if we convince them highways and free parking spaces are communist and soy and woke we can trick them into abolishing car culture to own the libs

Guys it's kind of classless to be celebrating the fall of the Eye of Sauron like this :/ he's the only ruler most of Mordor has EVER known and was a cultural institution there for years :/ you can't blame him for all of the actions of Morgoth :/

Try to have some respect the queen just DIED. It's not like she was evil or anything

And why should I do that for the head of a family that oversaw the British Empire's legendarily brutal concentration camps in colonialist Kenya during the 1952-1960 Mau Mau rebellion, has personally and repeatedly shielded credibly accused rapist Prince Andrew and tried to get the scandal to go away, personally paid Andrew's financial settlement while the family treated Meghan Markle terribly and gave her none of the same protection, exerted a huge amount of control over UK public finances without any transparency or disclosure (while also receiving huge amounts of that money), got to personally edit laws according to her likes and dislikes, enjoyed sweeping legal immunities that are described as a "threat to UK democracy," is the most visible figurehead of British colonialism even as her descendants put on a horribly tone-deaf Caribbean tour (twice in one year!) that was basically about unreconstructed imperial imagery of the kind that is poisoning Britain, while the entire country buys into the fantasy that she is an impartial, uninvolved, kindly and benevolent grandmotherly figure....?

Nah.

“You shouldn’t celebrate the Queen’s death, she has a family-”

How many families did her direct colonialism destroy? How many children lost their grandparents and their parents and their families and their culture and their country because of her rule? How many people suffered and died endlessly because of her greed and the greed of her family? How many cultures did she destroy? How many lives did she ruin?

Her death may mark the beginning of the end of the British Empire, it may mark freedom for so many sovereign nations who are forced to serve under Britain’s rule.

Yes it will be complicated and yes things may get worse before they get better, but this may mark freedom for many colonized nations, this may finally be their chance to leave Britain’s rule, and that is something worth celebrating.
