The second you spoke to Ethan you could tell something was off. He was shaking, kept biting his nails and wouldn’t look you straight in the eye.
You two had been dating for almost 2 years so you could always tell when there was something wrong with him. And today you could tell it was something very bad.
“What is it, E?” You asked softly as you poured both of you a drink.
“What do you mean?’ He took a sharp intake of breath "I’m fine”
It was so blatantly obvious he was lying straight to your face. Part of you wanted to believe maybe he was hiding a surprise from you, a present or maybe a vacation. But deep down you knew, you could just tell that it definitely wouldn’t be something good.
“Then why are you shaking?” You gestured to the glass you’d just handed to him that was practically vibrating in his huge shaking hand.
“Drank too much coffee,” He said quickly and shoved the glass on the side.
You cocked an eyebrow knowing again, he was lying.
“For god sake, Ethan!” You snapped, you never used his full name so immediately he knew he was in shit "I know you’re lying so just fess up right now"
He sighed deeply, trying to keep himself calm.
He shifted in his seat and finally looked up at you, still not making proper eye contact but he could feel your eyes boring into him which made him feel rather uncomfortable.
“Um, I-” He began to talk and that’s when you noticed it.
A deep purple hickey just under his jawline.
You felt like your heart had just cracked straight in half like someone had just punched you in gut.
“Oh my.. god” You breathed out slowly hardly believing what you were seeing.
He knitted his eyebrows together in worry and confusion.
He finally looked you in the eye as he tried to work out what had shocked you that’s when he realised where you were looking.
“Shit” He muttered and bought his hand up to the hickey.
You reached over and tugged his hand away.
“Tell me it’s not real, tell me this is a prank please Ethan. This can’t be real.” You pleaded are you rubbed at this hickey to see if it would come over.
Tears began to fog your vision as you rubbed frantically at his neck becoming more and more distressed.
He moved your hand away and gently pushed you back into your seat.
“It’s real,” He said quietly, hanging his head in shame.
You stared at him, jaw hanging open, not being able to comprehend the words falling out his mouth.
“I made a mistake” He sighed and rubbed his face “I don't know how it happened, I wasn’t thinking straight if I could go back and change it I would. That’s, not me you know that y/n. I love you I’d never hurt you on purpose it was a mistake. Please forgive me”
You remained silent despite the thousands of thoughts rushing through your brain.
He stared back at you silently begging you to react to what he’d just said, praying you wouldn’t be too upset, hoping everything would be ok.
The room fell silent for several tense seconds. Both of your heads for spinning.
“Yell, scream, cry, please, just say something, anything,” Ethan begged, he was holding back tears.
When you didn’t reply he spoke again “Are you going to talk to me?”.
Fear swept over him and his heart began to beat rapidly. He realised that he could lose you, that everything could be over for you two, all because he made a dumb mistake. He entirely slapped himself in the face.
“I hate you,” You said, it was the only thing you could muster up, the pain in your heart was so strong; you could feel it shattering into tiny pieces.
“W-what?” He stuttered, so taken back by your words.
“How could you?! How could you put me through this?! Did you ever fucking love me or was it all fake because I’ve heard if you genuinely love someone you won’t even be slightly interested in anyone else. So that says a lot about how you really feel.” You replied, so many emotions were bubbling up inside you; you couldn’t decide if you were more upset or angry.
You stood up quickly and rushed over to the bedroom.
“Where are you going?” He said as he followed after you.
You grabbed your bag off the floor and began shoving all your things inside it.
Ethan grabbed your arm and stopped your actions, you tried to fight against him but he was so much stronger than you so your efforts were pointless.
“Listen, stop, we need to talk you can’t just walk out.” He tried to sound authoritative but it came out more like a plea.
“Watch me Ethan!” You almost yelled as the anger got the best of you.
“Don’t yell at me” He said harshly, almost making you feel like a child as he toward over you spitting out commands.
You glanced over at the bed covered by a crumpled duvet and the anger rose again.
“What it in the bed we shared last night?! Did you fuck her right here, where I lay just hours before?!” You growled and felt the tears begin to come back.
“Y/n please let me explain, it was a mistake it meant literally nothing. Like I’ve said I’m not like that!” He replied “I’m so sorry”
“You say you’re not like that but you’ve done exactly that, the thing that has hurt me the most!” Your voice began to crack as tears streamed down your face “You’re exactly like that Ethan.”
He had no response he just stood there regretting everything, he’d hurt and possibly lost the person that meant the most to him; you.
You continued collecting your possessions as your cheeks became more tear-stained.
“No no stop” He insisted as he grabbed both your arms and shoved you back into the wall behind you and pulled your chin up gently forcing you to look at him.
You sighed and raised your eyebrows but didn’t bother trying to fight against him as you knew you’d lose.
“Look I don’t want you to leave like this,” He said as he used his thumb to softly wipe the tears off your face and the other hand gently ran through your hair and pushed it behind your ear. His warm touch made you weak, almost made you want to forgive him but you fought against that feeling.
“Why do you care? The sooner I leave the sooner you can call your side chick right?” You hissed.
“Stop it” He demanded, “I’m so fucking sorry why can’t you just calm down so we can talk like adults?”
“I need to calm down?! I’m not the one who just hit a wall"You responded as the argument got heated again.
“For god sake” He groaned as he let one of his arms slip down the wall. “I just don’t want to lose you, you don’t understand; I don’t know what I’d do without you.
“Well, maybe you should have thought about that before you cheated on me” You threw your arms up in anger and accidentally hit a picture frame.
You caught it as it flew off the drawer. As you flipped it over you realised it was a picture of you and Ethan. This broke your heart even more if that as possible, you both looked so happy there. Part of you wished you could just go back to that moment.
“I miss the way things used to be.“ He whispered as he looked down at the photo.
“Well, you fucked that up didn’t you” You replied, “So you won’t need that anymore.”
You’re not exactly sure why you did it but you threw the photo at the ground with all your strength and watched it shatter, it was like a visual of what Ethan had just done to your heart.
“What the fuck" He muttered.
“I don’t know if it’s clear to you or not but I’m done, E,“ You said and the way you called him his nickname instead of his name bought tears to his eyes.
“No, you’re not fucking giving up on us” He almost raised his voice.
“I don’t have to you already did that for me.’ You said and couldn’t help but glance over his shoulder to the messy bed behind him.
“ love you more than life, you’re my world. I-“
"Shut up just shut up!” You yelled.
“How many times do I have to say don’t fucking yell at me" This time actually raised his voice making you jump again.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore Ethan cause you’re not my boyfriend anymore. I’m breaking up with you why can’t you get that in your head" You shouted back.
He stared at you in shock as your words finally sunk in, that was it he’d actually lost you.
You shoved past him and picked up your bag.
As you headed out he spoke again, “Please don’t go, I love you” he whimpered.
You sighed and looked down, you wanted to turn around and throw yourself into his arms. But you couldn’t.
“I loved you too, E”
He broke down into a puddle of tears as he heard the door click shut behind you.

2) Flower shop AU
i) You buy a weird amount of flowers and I’m concerned as to why
ii) I’m allergic to flowers but I work in a flower shop – you’re a customer who’s very confused as to why I’d do that
iii) (this is also a good way to incorporate flower meanings eg, buying certain colours/types for person to represent feelings etc.)
3) Library AU
i) You’re overdue on this book and I want it so I’m tracking u the fuck down
ii) I work in the library and I’m a little concerned for your health bc you never stop studying
iii) The library’s pretty empty save for you and me and OH that couple making out loudly in the shelves somewhere
4) Awful first time meeting
i) I accidentally punched you in the face when I was too overexcited about something
ii) I thought you were my friend who’s just done something awful to me (read: cut my hair while I slept, dyed all of my clothes pink, etc. etc.) because you look similar from behind so I stormed up to you and shoved you from behind while calling you an asshole

i) The first words your true love(s) will say to you are tattooed on you and why the fuck are their first words something really ridiculous like ‘I’ll pay you a tenner to punch me in the face’ or ‘quick what’s your favourite animal’ or ‘fucking shit hell holy fuck wow oh my god jesus h Christ fuck me’ etc. or even worse a really ridiculous song lyric like the opening lines of uptown funk or a high school musical song or smthing did you have to serenade me the first time you saw me asshole?
ii) You get an ‘impression’ of your soulmate when you turn 18 or something but all I got was a strong smell of bananas or an overwhelming feeling that Thatcher was a good prime minister or an image in my mind of a fucking unicorn
iii) The more ridiculous the better actually
iv) Something like whenever your soulmate sings a duet you can’t help but join in and my fucking soulmate is in a goddamn band but I can’t sing for shit
v) Or maybe something like soulmates always sneeze at the same time and I cant be sure but me and this kid in my French class just sneezed at the same time are we soulmates or was it a coincidence (proceed w character trying to make themselves sneeze around said person to see what’s what)

iv) It started to snow and I’m the only one of our friends who would go outside with you – I soon found out why none of the others would go out in the snow with you (this works best if they’re new friends who don’t know each other all that well) when you shoved a handful of snow down my back and declared snow war
v) It’s nowhere near Christmas it’s literally still November would you calm down about Christmas wait no why are you getting the tree out no stop please stop (if you do this pre-relationship you can have the grouchy one secretly finding the other’s excitement endearing and falling in love with them actually that works for established relationship too)
vi) Current partner got a new job in America (or other country far away) and we’re getting by on skype calls and emails but it’s not easy and then I met someone new (can be poly or can be finding the OTP person)
vii) You want us both to get in shape and I hate working out/running but your ass looks really good in shorts oh the things I do for my friends and their nice asses
