[OOC] Muse, a definition
Ok… I have to, well I don’t want to say rant but just have to comment on this. Ever since I started this blog I’ve been following other FFXIV Blogs and I’ll see these “Send me something back I’ll tell you something about my muse”. This… confused the HELL out of me. Why? Because my muse is a dark tormentor who doesn’t care about handholding or being nice. My muse torments me day and night, sometimes badgering me to write non-stop and othertimes deserts me completely. My muse is my -inspiration-, my drive to create.
My muse is NOT my CHARACTER.
Until I joined the FFXIV RP community I had -never- heard this referenced like this. My writing and fanfic communities follow the classical definition that is in the dictionary. Our muses are things outside us who give us the inspiration to create our characters, our stories, our art. Read the story of Calliope in the Sandman: Dream Country.
Now please don’t take this as a rant that demands everyone to change because they are “doing it wrong”. English is a living language that is constantly changing. It’s just.. confusing to me. And not just me. @erahsae-ffxiv was just as confused as I was. It wasn’t until I saw someone answer a question and I realized they were answering from the POV of their character that it finally clicked. Part of me just can’t accept it though so don’t expect me to use the two interchangeably. For many, many, MANY a year I’ve already established my bitch of a muse. So if stuff like that crosses my dash rather than reblogging it I might re-hash it with the word “muse” changed to “OC”.
Anyone else out there in the same boat?
Posting this on my OOC blog because this is really an OOC thing.
So I was browsing through Tumblr today and ran into the whole ‘muse’ thing again, reminding me of this rant I wrote a while back. Even now, two years later it still just really irks me.
Why you ask?
For a couple reasons to tell the truth.
First the the actual definitions of the word.
- verb (used with object), mused, musing.
3.to meditate on.
4.to comment thoughtfully or ruminate upon.
- noun
1.Classical Mythology.any of a number of sister goddesses, originally given as Aoede(song), Melete (meditation), and Mneme (memory), but latterly and more commonly as the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne who presided over various arts: Calliope (epic poetry),Clio (history), Erato (lyric poetry), Euterpe (music), Melpomene(tragedy), Polyhymnia (religious music), Terpsichore (dance),Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy); identified by the Romans with the Camenae. any goddess presiding over a particular art.
2.(sometimes lowercase) the goddess or the power regarded as inspiring a poet, artist, thinker, or the like.
3.(lowercase) the genius or powers characteristic of a poet.
Second is that there is a subtle psychological difference going on here that quite possibly may be overlooked. How to put this…. well first I’m not a professional psychologist or anything so this is just my personal opinion about how the English language interprets these words and how I’ve observed other players in my close to 15 years of RPing in MMOs (closer to 25 for actual RPing).
For me, the creative process goes sorta like this:
Inspiration/Idea -> Player/Writer -> Character/Story
My inspirations or actual ‘Muse” is something outside of my creations. It is what drives me to create and weave the stories i wish to tell. However if rather than getting that outside inspiration I’m solely driven by my own creations we have a closed loop.
Player/Writer
/ \
Character/Story
This closed loop is… well in this case, from my point of view, bad. When your stories have no outside influences you run into problems like stagnation. We grow through exposure. Any good author/artist will tell you that exposure to other writing/art helped them grow in ways they never would have otherwise. If the story or character you have seems to go nowhere or feel boring, repetitive, etc, then I suggest you look outside your creative process for inspiration.
It’s easiest to see the issues if you replace the writing/role playing with painting. An artist looks at a model or landscape. They then turn to their canvas to fill it with their interpretation of that object or scene. If you solely only look at what’s on that canvas in an effor to continue to fill it you likely will end up with a mess rather than a work of art. Even abstract expressionism takes feelings and emotions from the artist or situation, not the canvas they are working on. That canvas was blank to start with.
Just because we are dealing with words doesn’t change the creative process. It’s the same principle and we have even more of a blank canvas to work with than painters. All we have are our experiences to draw on.
I see it frequently where some get so absorbed in their character yet quickly their passion for it fades and they often make a new one, the cycle continues. Not knowing their situation makes me wonder if this might be the case. Of looking solely at that character for inspiration, as a muse, and not looking outside that character to expose them to new things and help them grow.
In any case, I know that using ‘muse’ to refer to one’s character is an established thing and that likely won’t change. For most it’s just a term, a label, and nothing else. I’ll never use it though. The next time you refer to your character, just think about what I’ve said here. If you don’t like using it (I’ve talked to a few before about this) then don’t. Why be pressured into using a term you don’t like?
So if you ever hear me talk about my Muse, I’m not talking about any of my characters. I’m talking about that spark of creative inspiration that loves to torment me. My friends and I have been talking about our creative muses probably for close to 3 decades so if you talk about your muse to me I’m likely to not understand that you are referring to your character so please be patient while I figure it out.
