Some of my scene sketches from Mystery Skulls Animated - The Future! I love when I get to do unique drawings for specific shots and these were both super fun and emotionally painful to draw haha. If you haven’t already, please go and enjoy our newest music video on youtube!
“Finders Weepers”, the first episode I boarded for Nickelodeon’s new show “The Casagrandes”, will be premiering tomorrow (episode written by Alejandro Bien-Willner and directed by @pugavida). It will air alongside the episode “Arr in the Family” at 11:30am PT. It’s still surreal to know that something I boarded will be airing on TV, but I’m very grateful to be working with such an awesome crew!
Has a lot of fun doodling these silly things on last night’s MSA stream with @mysterybensmysteryblog, @artsyfeathersartsyblog, and @heilos!
Hey all, just as a heads up about the MSA shirts- please keep in mind that these were PRE-ORDER shirts so we are still in the process of making roughly around 3k(!!!) shirts from scratch. We hope for your patience as we get things made, sent, and them delivered your way!
MSA: Hellbent Intro Boards (Early Version)
For those who are interested, this was my first pass for the intro sequence for Hellbent. It had a few cool dynamic shots that I wish I could have kept in the final video, but wasn’t able to fit it in.
The final version of the intro can be found HERE.
MSA: Hellbent Intro Boards (Final Version)
Adding a little intro section for the beginning of Hellbent was something we decided to implement very early on in preproduction. Due to the song itself being so short, we knew that it was nearly impossible to include everything we wanted to have happen within just the confines of the song, so we needed some extra time in the beginning to set things up before everything went to... well, you know haha.
The intro was a collaborative effort largely between me and @koalacola. I did a first pass (Link), while he did a separate first pass. Then, picking and expanding upon elements from both our passes, I put together and timed out the final version that ended up in the video.
Because this section is not primarily driven by music and there is no dialogue, sound was a huge factor of this intro that I felt we had to get right (since we’re trying to make the atmosphere somewhat scary for poor Arthur). I thus made a temp sound track to get a good feel of what we’re going for (please forgive the more silly sound effects in this animatic). I was absolutely smitten when I heard Strelok’s final pass for the sound design for this section, and I can’t thank him enough for fully realizing the eerie atmosphere I was hoping we could achieve.
One more piece of trivia: This video was the first time that we had people other than Ben do a majority of the storyboard and animatic. For Ghost and Freaking Out, Ben had pretty much storyboarded and timed out everything. For this project, I was given the opportunity to do the exciting yet daunting task of helping board out the next Mystery Skulls installment largely from scratch. Ben provided the outline as well as some specific things he wanted to see in the story, but everything else was fair game (under his supervision of course haha).
Thanks for reading through my rambles on this intro. It’s one of my personal favorite pieces of MSA material I’ve had the honor working on, and I hope you’ve all enjoyed it as much as I had working on it.
Were there any extraneous scenes that you considered putting in the new Hellbent video but ultimately cut? If they're not spoiler-y, care to tell us a couple?
Unfortunately Muppet vivi didn’t make the final cut, but I want you all to know that I tried.

Haha that’s the thing about storyboarding. Sometimes you gotta cut some stuff out, no matter how Muppet-y it is (and maybe I might post some of it here sometime in the near future…?)
In just a little under 3 days, we’ve already reached the 1,000,000 mark!
There’s very little for me to say other than thank you to all of you. It’s been a blast to see everyone react so overwhelmingly positive to all the work we’ve put into one video for the past two years.
Thank you to all the fan artists, fan theorists, cosplayers, .gif makers, commenters, viewers and everyone in between.
On behalf of me and the team, we hope to deliver more quality content to all of you before too long and sincerely thank all of you very much for being on this journey with us.
Thank you everyone! :D
Mystery Skulls Animated - Hellbent
Hellbent is finally here! I had a ton of fun doing boards for this video, and I hope you all enjoy it! :)
Ghost: Hellbent progress update
Heya everyone, we are still plugging away on the Hellbent video. While we’ve made some good progress this month, we unfortunately won’t be able to finish it for October. We don’t have a set date in mind at the moment, but we like to think we can get it out this year.
A majority of the raw animation is completed by now. We are about halfway through background art. Afterward will be effects, fixes, and final compositing.
We apologize for not being able to make it in time of our preferred release date, but we want to make sure the video is as polished as we can make it. We will keep everyone posted when we have a release date set in stone.
Beyond that, we do have some extra things in the works.
This here is a schematic for an official Mystery plush. We’ve gotten a prototype made and are continuing to make adjustments. We aren’t quite sure how we’re going to fund the production, but we’ll let everyone know when we have things more solidified.
Again, we apologize we weren’t able to get stuff out to ya’ll faster, but thank you for sticking with us and we hope to have content for everyone before too long.
I’ve helped storyboard for Hellbent and the footage that the team has been producing is amazing. Also I’m super excited for the plush haha.
Shiromori is best
She is pretty awesome haha. Ben did an awesome job with her design.
Shiromori is on the same kinda level for me as Ruby from steven universe in which I just look at her and think about how fun she must've been to animate
I would say her face was the most fun thing to animate/draw since she has a lot of room to react to various things. The rest of her body was pretty tricky for me to be honest haha
What do you think was the most anime moment in a Either of the mystery skulls animations
For me it’s probably the part where Lewis punches Shiromori in Freaking Out. (though that might be because I was looking at various anime punches on Youtube as reference for the rough animation haha)
Sorry if that question bother you, but, how's anthropology's going ?
It’s been a long time since I first put out those super rough boards haha... As of now it’s currently on the shelf due to life and other projects I’ve been involved with over the past couple of years, but Anthropology is definitely something I intend to finish soon. 50 seconds of character animation is all done and colored! I just need to find the time to sit down and get the rest done.
To everyone who has sent me questions and messages over the past few months: I deeply apologize for the long silence. I’ll be responding to them as soon as I can.
So… I was recently introduced to the old Rolling Girl meme…
and the lyrics kinda reminded me of Vivi…
Awesome stuffins! =D
Smile you three because the world already loves you!
Please reblog!
Super adorable! ^_^
