just so you guys are all aware, the only reason gritty exists is allegedly because the NHL made a rule that every team HAD to have a mascot and were apparently assholes about it. so the fliers made him as a chaotic fuck you. hell the first tweet made on his official account was a “sleep with one eye open” threat towards another mascot for making fun of his design

the best part about Gritty was when he was unveiled, the entirety of Philadelphia reacted with “wtf is this shit” until the rest of the world reacted with “wtf is this shit,” whereupon we lashed back with “FUCK ALL Y'ALL HE IS THE BEST FUCKING MASCOT EVER AND WE LOVE HIM WITH EVERY FIBER OF OUR BEING” because Philadelphia.
I’ve seen this video so many times, and I just now processed that Gritty is playing Duck, Duck, Goose, and the third guy is literally wearing a shirt that says GOOSE on it. Amazing. No notes.
I find it suspicious that you never see posts along the lines of "cishet people should stop using the word 'queer', that's a word that only queer people get to use." Not because I think that it's necessarily true, but because that's the normal way social conversations around reclaimed slurs & pejoratives evolve. You rarely hear people on tumblr saying "black people/hispanic people/asian people aren't allowed to say [slur that has been used specifically against them]." Because most of us recognize that that's nonsense, and that you don't get to tell minorities which words they can and can't reclaim.
But tumblr didn't do that with the word 'queer'. It didn't go the usual route of discussion around who can and can't say what. Tumblr just jumped straight into trying to erase the word completely. And that is because the discourse around 'queer' isn't a conversation that evolved naturally within our community. It was purposefully (and successfully) created out of thin air from a sudden, relentless onset of terf propaganda. Terfs who hated having a trans-inclusive umbrella term for our community, who wanted nothing more than to disrupt unity. Well congratu-fucking-lations, it's been disrupted.
2 years is all it took. 2 years of relentless comments and inbox messages from people pretending to be concerned strangers, friendly anons who wanted you to know 'you should maybe not use that word 🙂.' 'a lot of people have trauma around it so maybe use a different word 🙂 a less inclusive word 🙂.' 'queer isn't an identity it's a slur 🙂.' and suddenly our most powerful trans-inclusive umbrella term is blacklisted.
2 years of this and suddenly you had half a generation of lgbtqa+ teens who had been told this over and over again, by friendly trustworthy strangers, to the point it passed the evidence threshold and just became a Belief. because young teens heard it so often from so many 'random’ people, and weren't aware of where it was actually coming from. hint: the discourse around queer has ALWAYS been about disrupting unity

With so many elections coming up worldwide it’s probably a good time to remind everyone that tumblr once got infested with agents trying to convince everyone not to vote, or not to vote left because the candidates weren’t morally pure enough.
Also a reminder that they were better at tumblr than most of us, comrade interloper was great at memeing. Like, the talent!
Anyway don’t fall for it. There is no morally pure option.
I was reading a book from 1945, where the writer describes being a 16-year old girl in 1930 Germany, contemplating what to vote if she were allowed but finding no morally pure option.
The Nazis, in 1933, only needed less than 44% of the vote to end democracy in Germany and start working towards a war that led to the most horrific genocide in memory.
It is normal, then, for young people everywhere, to look for a morally pure option. It’s not new, it’s simply the unwillingness to contribute towards evil and that is good and noble and beautiful.
But it can be weaponised.
If you do not vote for the greatest possible good…
That can be taken advantage of by the greatest possible evil. Because it gives them space.
Because those 44% was not, and I’m certain, 44% of the entire population elligible for voting.
It was 44% of the people willing to vote at all.
Some, I’m certain, didn’t vote for moral reasons. Would that they had.
Hitler might have never become head of the German government.
Vote for the greatest good on offer, to help drown out the greatest evil.
“There is no morally pure option” — i respectfully but emphatically disagree.
The morally pure option is to do whatever you can to prevent the morally abominable from achieving power.
If you prevent the raging bigot from being elected by voting instead for the candidate who’s policies aren’t perfect, but who is not actively trying to destroy entire sections of society, well, that’s the morally pure option.
There are no morally pure candidates, sure. Theres not a single morally pure human being in the whole entire world. But the morally pure option is to vote for the least bad candidate, so that you prevent the election of literal evil.
I mean there have probably been a lot of other good ones but I don’t catch them all.
If you consider yourself radical, please take a moment to think about why you see yourself that way. Is it because you do everything possible to change the world and real, working class people’s material conditions for the better? Or is it because you like the aesthetic of radicalism? If you are not willing to vote for a morally “impure” candidate, you are not working to improve material conditions, you are radical on an aesthetic level only. Also no, I am not talking about the presidency or other high levels of government that do not impact your personal life. I am talking about city council, county commission, state representatives, and anything else that will impact your community.
I’ll just add that, on my recent post about Student Loan Forgiveness, I got a a good dozen empty bot blogs adding very inflammatory replies and reblogs, and another dozen or so “there’s just no hope” ones. They’re out there right now and they’re working hard.
(All these people were reported, blocked, and had their replies deleted. Nothing I can do about the reblogs though, unfortunately.)

Update again. The Russian server has dropped Kiwi Farms too, and the owner of the site, has basically admitted defeat, as he really is out of options for hosting now.

The admin for the site, Josh Moon, is very clearly one and uses all the dog whistles under his account “Null”.
Reversing course under growing public pressure, major tech security company Cloudflare announced Saturday that it will stop protecting the Kiwi Farms website, best known as a place for stalkers to organize hacks, online campaigns and real-world harassment.
Cloudflare Chief Executive Matthew Prince, who this past week published a lengthy blog post justifying the company’s services defending websites such as Kiwi Farms, told The Washington Post he changed his mind not because of the pressure but a surge in credible violent threats stemming from the site.
“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince said. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.”
Prince said contributors to the forum were posting home addresses of those seen as enemies and calling for them to be shot.
After Cloudflare’s move, visitors to Kiwi Farms were greeted by this message: “Due to an imminent and emergency threat to human life, the content of this site is blocked from being accessed through Cloudflare’s infrastructure.”
In a post on Telegram, Kiwi Farms’ founder, Josh Moon, said Cloudflare made its decision “without any discussion” and said he had not been contacted by law enforcement about threats on the site. “It’s early morning hours here,” the post said. “My thoughts will be articulated better in the morning.”
Kiwi Farms launched in 2013 and quickly grew into a popular internet forum for online harassment campaigns. At least three suicides have been tied to harassment stemming from the Kiwi Farms community, and many on the forum consider their goal to drive their targets to suicide. Members of the LGBTQ community and women are frequent targets.
Cloudflare has faced broad backlash in the past week as a campaign for it to drop the service gained steam and widened to pressure paying customers to drop Cloudflare if it held firm. The company says it provides some services, mostly for free, that protect nearly a fifth of all internet traffic.

If you haven’t heard of it, Kiwi Farms is a forum for users so vile even 4chan won’t host them. Their forum is dedicated to organizing targeted harassment campaigns against Trans folks, such as harassment, cyber-stalking, doxing, swatting attempts, and suicide-baiting. So far, three deaths have been connected to Kiwi Farms.
