It's funny that subreddits like am I the asshole have this association with opening the eyes of beleaguered mom-wives and helping brainwashed victims see the light when it's mostly just made up stories asking if it's okay to hate the acceptable targets of society, eg trans women, fat people, autistics, mental illness beyond functional depression/anxiety, personality disorders in particular, abuse victims who aren't lovably fragile, the infertile, the physically disabled, the poor, and so on. The answer will be yes.
Subs like aita thrive on conflict, clearcut morality, cultural landmines, and soapboxing. It's a high traffic, popular group that regularly breaches containment onto other platforms, even news sites - this makes it an ideal place to push an agenda. Make a throwaway because you're "scared your friends will find this," strike the right balance of innocent lamb bullied into thinking they did something wrong, make a caricature of a villain who's cruelty is driven by their marginalized status, and you've got yourself the most popular post of the day!
It's not an outright rightwing sub where you can just say "I hate X people." It IS a place where you can get a lot of e-validation and sympathy by asking if you're a bad person for being upset when X person assaulted you. Of course it's wrong if anyone assaults you! But now you, the undiscerning refer, are thinking about this poor baby who, for some reason, has been lead to believe it's okay if X people assault you! I mean, I'm all for X rights but gosh doesn't this make you think 🤔
This issue isn't immediately obvious if you only know them the few screenshots that make it over here, but if you stick around, you note recurring themes. OPs who've been all but forgotten in favor of their coddled autistic sibling, who uses their favored position to abuse and torment. Jealous fat women throwing temper tantrums when skinny women breathe near them. Abandoning your mentally ill abuser and inciting 200 redditors to inform you that they're mentally ill and they would never, trust me that person's simply an ass, no excuses, period, they do NOT speak for us.
