me watching The Witcher: Xena vibes! High fantasy nonsense! Wizards! Weird timelines. More wizards! Unexpectedly compelling commentary on what it means to be a “monster.” Even MORE Wizards! BARDS! This is what I signed up for.
critics watching The Witcher: This claims to be Fantasy, yet it is not Game of Thrones? Suspicious. Also I will demand that it 100% make sense, because that has always been a hallmark of the fantasy genre.
Sea Fever! My favorite poem in the world, especially as the season ends each year and I get nostalgic. I hope I’ve done it justice.

“Many movies about artificial intelligence are so divorced from scientific reality that one suspects they are just allegories of completely different concerns. For example, the 2015 movie Ex Machina seems to be about an AI expert who falls in love with a female robot, only to be duped and manipulated by her. But in reality, this is not a movie about the human fear of intelligent robots; this is a movie about the male fear of intelligent women, and in particular the fear that female liberation might lead to female domination. Whenever you see a movie about an AI in which the AI is female and the scientist is male, it’s probably a movie about feminism rather than cybernetics. For why on earth would an AI have a sexual or gender identity?”

yeah “AI” movies, and their predecessor robot stories, have literally only ever been allegories
“JUST MARRIED,” Fernando, seated, and his husband, both members of Los Angeles’ Blue Max Motorcycle Club, get pulled over as they leave their wedding ceremony, December 1969. Photo c/o @onearchives. In the mid-twentieth century, the Blue Max Motorcycle Club, along with many other gay motorcycle clubs, provided an alternative to gay bars, which were constantly at risk of police raids and harassment. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #lgbtpride #queerhistorymatters #haveprideinhistory (at Los Angeles, California)
fun fact: motorcycle clubs in the U.S. were founded and run largely by gay men who missed the homosocial camaraderie of being in the U.S. military during WWII. the lifestyle and aesthetics of those motorcycle clubs gave rise to many of the stereotypical/classic gay “looks” (leather, chaps, etc) and indeed to the gay leather scene itself (both the gay male leather/biker scene and the lesbian/dykes on bikes leather/biker scene)

Can we find a sun god or diety from every timezone and make a map of them all?
We probably can, but the question is should we?
How else will ship captains know who to pray to when they circumnavigate the globe?
…Give me until the end of the weekend.
I actually had some unexpected free time today so I was able to create this a lot faster than I expected.
It isn’t perfect, but following the initial post I assigned each timezone one sun deity, so travelers know who they might pray to while exploring the world.
This was a lot of fun to create and to research mythologies from across the world, and I think I learned a couple of things doing so!
Well, there you have it folks. Safe travels.

working full time is terrible why do we just accept that having 8 days off a month is normal and okay........ being alive could be cool but we waste it at our JOBS.... sorry i’m just heated about capitalism again i’ll be fine
8 days....never thought about it like that 😓
This seems really whiny to me. Like, I agree with you, work sucks, but our ancestors didn’t get to browse tumblr at their desks or have the option to gleefully spend their ENTIRE WEEKENDS horizontal on the couch stuffing their faces/watching tv/playing video games/wacking off. They didn’t have weekends. They just slaved away as fucking peasants from dawn to dusk until they died in childbirth or got the consumption.
I am perfectly happy working 8 hrs a day because I don’t have to:
grow my own food
find my own clean water
heat my house
shit in the woods
Hi, I study social and cultural anthropology. Humans working 40+ hours a week is 100% an industrial revolution thing and was not normal in the early stages of our existence. In fact, hunter and gatherer societies that still exist to this day spend about 15-20 hours a week TOPS working. The rest is dedicated to sitting around and telling stories and jokes, dancing, singing, eating, sleeping, fucking and so forth. Read a damn book.

Am I the only person who thought this was really fucking funny
A lot of the really funny moments in Lord of the Rings come from Tolkien playing with language like this, where we have relatively formal, archaic, “high” language responded to with informal, modern, “low” language.
another hilarious example:
my absolute favorite example of tolkien switching registers in this way is
I CAN HEAR YOU, SAMWISE GAMGEE
It’s a rhetoric device called “bathos”, and it’s considered an effective way of bringing lofty rhetoric back down to earth.
