reminds me of when some old church in Sweden was cleaning out their storage and they forgot they had left like 80 medieval corpses in some ikea bags during renovations so somebody opened a closet door and it’s just
Apparently one of thoes giant lilypads at kew is an undiscovered species but nobody noticed
side note, the guy in the photo and the guy who led the team that grew/described this absolute Unit is named Carlos Magdelena, hes a horticulturalist at the KEW who specializes in lily pads and is also known for being the guy who figured out how to grow the smallest lily pad species on earth, Nymphaea thermarum, from seed. it’s a species that’s now extinct in the wild and was brought to the KEW to keep it from all-out extinction, which it had an INCREDIBLY close brush with like, multiple times (it was native only to a single tiny hot spring in Rwanda that got drained from agricultural use).
here’s a picture of him holding it on top of the largest water lily in the world at the time of this photo, Victoria amazonica, which we now know is actually the second largest next to this new one, which is a close relative!
he also wrote a book of some of his stories of saving plants from extinction at the KEW called ‘the plant messiah’, which includes the story of N. thermarum. really cool non-academic read about rare plants and conservation, i need to reread it sometime!

general relativity for babies
babies? Hell, I’m an adult this is the clearest and most understandable explaination I’ve ever seen. This book is for anyone
This is the best example of “If you can’t explain it like to a small child, you don’t actually know the topic that well yourself either”.
Can I purchase this book? It’s too cute and too clever to not have it.
when they're remodeling houses on those HGTV shows and they rip out the most amazing seafoam green or baby blue or blush pink 70s tile....why do you hate style and fun
this. we NEED this. now more than ever
You are watching the wrong shows. Bargain Block and at least two other shows try to save and reuse this tile in their updated designs, or pay homage to it by re-glazing or using a similar tile if it's too damaged. The designer on Bargain Block will even paint the tile in some cases!
Fuck this one hits home.

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
⁂
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
Tumblr making ads rebloggable and likeable, and generally as interactive as a normal post is so funny to me, because it shows that staff lack the basic understanding of how bots—especially porn bots—utilize this platform to legitimize their shitty websites for SEO through interconnected links.
But, please, tell me again how the 18+ content ban fixed everything.
An update:
So us users can report sensitive content that violates the new rules. Content that is reported and found to violate the rules is removed. BUT THE POST IS NO DELETED. So that teaser video of the porn with a link below? The video is gone, but THE LINK TO THE SHITTY SITE REMAINS. That photo of a girl showing her naughty bits with a link to a malware site promising nudes? The photo is gone, but THE POST WITH THE LINK REMAINS.
That post that MAY contain sensitive content? They HIDE it. They DON'T DELETE IT. This is good for wrongfully flagged posts, but the algorithm is getting better at flagging correct content. After a human reviews it, it should be deleted if it's sensitive.
BLOGS THAT ONLY POST SENSITIVE CONTENT AND REBLOG ADS SHOULD BE DELETED.
CLEAN UP YOUR PLATFORM WITH IDEAS THAT MAKE SENSE, TUMBLR!!
I don't know who needs to hear this, but if the phrase "self care" doesn't resonate with you, try calling it "system maintenance" and see if that clicks.
stop feeling hopeless, start getting ready
If you are in a red state, your state either has an abortion ban in place or is rated by the Guttmacher Institute as likely to enact a ban. Your focus should be on protecting yourself and others who need abortions.
- stop using electronic period tracking apps or software
- educate yourself and others about pregnancy prevention and join groups that are making preventative birth control more accessible
- learn the nearest and most accessible routes to states where you and your loved ones can access abortion
- contribute to mutual aid funds to help transport people over state lines if they are in need of abortion
- consider joining The Satanic Temple so you can claim protections under the Religious Abortion Ritual if you are prosecuted for obtaining an abortion
- keep a stock of by-mail abortion pills for yourself and/or others who may need them (you may need to travel out of state to obtain them)
- form community provider networks and see if you or someone you know can be trained to use manual vacuum aspiration kits or a Del-Em
- all of the above should be done in complete secrecy using verbal communication, end-to-end encrypted apps such as Signal, or a VPN
If you are in a yellow state, you currently have constitutional abortion protections but they are in jeopardy. Get active in local political groups NOW to fight back against constitutional amendments to ban abortion. Your focus should be purely on political action.
If you are in Michigan, you currently have a ban in place which is being challenged, and your governor is working to add abortion protections into the Michigan state constitution. Your focus should be on supporting the work that is currently under way.
If you are in a green state, your state has constitutional protections for abortion that are unlikely to be challenged. Your focus should be on helping others to enter your state for abortion care.
- connect with abortion access groups such as Aid Access, Abortion on Demand, the National Network of Abortion Funds, or Just The Pill
- volunteer to help people enter your state for abortion care, either with transportation help or letting someone crash on your couch
- if you live in a green state with no current or predicted primary routes from other states for abortion access, you can focus your efforts on supporting political action in other areas
If you are in a purple state, your state currently has no constitutional protections for abortion but is unlikely to implement a ban. You have two focuses: pushing for constitutional protections AND helping others to enter your state for abortion care (see green state list).
thank you

People taking testosterone:
Hi! Wanted to share an important experience I had recently that I think you should know about, especially if you’re a fellow petite trans guy or similar!
I just got an awesome gynecologist who works with all sorts of people, including trans guys and such. She made me feel very safe, comfortable, and heard! One of the things she asked me during my visit was if I had anyone in my family who has/had Osteoporosis - a condition that makes your bones weak and brittle.
I had no idea why that would even matter, but both of my mom’s parents did, and I found out later that my mom has Osteopenia (sort of a halfway point between healthy bones and Osteoporosis). My doctor nodded and then explained that since 1) Osteoporosis runs in my family, 2) I am a trans guy taking weekly testosterone, and 3) I am petite at 5′0″ and 100-110 lbs, I should get a bone density scan done. Huh??? Why???
Did you know that estrogen actually protects your bones by suppressing reabsorption of the bone itself?? It works with the osteoblasts needed to create new bone! She explained that those of us with smaller bodies naturally have less hormones, and thus less estrogen to begin with, and when you start taking testosterone for a long time, it stops the estrogen, which stops protecting your bones. Damn!!!!
Now, because studies on trans bodies, especially over long periods of time, are in a growing field, we become part of the data. There’s not a lot to read on the subject yet, just like the similarities between being on testosterone and going through menopause.
My doctor looked at me in all my confusion and said,
“I bring all this up because I have a couple of trans male patients who have developed Osteoporosis by the time they’re 30.”
Let that sink in. (I’m almost 26.)
The scan took all of 5 minutes, completely harmless, got to keep all my clothes on. A few days later and I get a result that my pelvic bones are fine, but that my spine has “MINOR Osteopenia” and that I should do the following things to prevent worsening:
- Take Vitamin D3
- Take Calcium (preferably with food, but supplements are okay too)
- Do weight-bearing exercises (“In regard to weightbearing exercises, we think the best is walking and/or running, hiking, and yoga. Swimming or biking is not recommended as a weightbearing exercise.”)
While this looks like a simple “eat better, get more sunshine, exercise more!” bit, (which I guess it sort of is??) it’s also… a little scary? Research on trans bodies has never before led me to this possible conclusion, and I wanted to make sure other people knew about this possibility as well, so they can ask their doctors questions to stay healthy!!
If for no other reason than spite, trans bodies have to keep living!!! STRONG BONES, LACTOSE INTOLERANCE BE DAMNED!!
you will also need vitamin k for calcium absorption which you can handily get by eating like a cup / 150g of cucumber. if you’re lactose intolerant you can get calcium fortified soya products & it’s also present in kale, okra and cucumber again but not in large amounts
