Chestnut Fest 2022 Week 2: 50 Cents In Store Credit

Here we go, Week 2! This week’s theme was “Gamers”, so I opted for a little bit of a slice-of-life-y story with some new characters! Bonus points for anyone who notices the naming convention and what their names are derived from. And yes, Dragon Quest is the only franchise mentioned by name, for obvious reasons. :) Let’s get right into it! Links: AO3 FF.net

WEEK 2 IN THE BOOKS!

Apparently I have become semi-known as “the Krillin guy”. i am ok with that

Apparently the Super manga revisionists are at work again. They really want to reinforce the one panel during the Moro arc that has Piccolo state that Vegeta has never misread an opponent.

In fact, I see people saying that Vegeta actually overestimated his own strength and never misread an opponent. Freeza, Cell, and Majin Boo? Vegeta had a perfect grasp on their power and simply overestimated his own strength and ability.

How do they not see the problem with this?

...yeah that makes sense.

It's still jarring how Krillin's height keeps alternating, even in the original manga. Sometimes, he's a couple of inches shorter than Vegeta and other times he only comes up to Goku's waist. It's weird.

Well canonically speaking, their heights are set at an 11cm difference. Krillin is 11cm shorter than Vegeta, and Vegeta is also 11cm shorter than Goku. But a lot of the height fluctuation, in Toriyama's manga, at least, stemmed from his changing art style. When DB first started, it was very heavily rooted in Toriyama's comedic gag manga style, which includes humorous height discrepancies. If a character is meant to be seen as "short", they will be shrunken down almost to the size of a small child. As his art style evolved, that changed and happened less frequently, taking on a more traditional tone, but still crept back in on occasion. It's really down to his roots, mostly.. As for the anime, they do it a lot of times just for the hey of it. I mean shoot, when Vegeta first appeared there was a noticeable height difference between him and Goku. Now he's often drawn as almost the same height. Freeza's depicted as taller than he arguably should be as well. A lot of times it'll vary depending on the team animating and/or their director.

Would you say Bulma flirtet with krillin a little bit in the movie? Teasing him and then being concerned about him

Ok... I will concede that, especially in the Japanese version, I can see why people might think it. She's giggly and soft-spoken when she teases him, there's genuine concern in her voice when he's gonna jump in the fight, but you can make a strong case for Bulma just being comfortable about doing that since they've known each other since they were kids too. And given Bulma has a naturally more flirty personality, maybe it comes off that way more than intended? Maybe the director or the actress made that call? I can't really say. I tease about it on occasion but I wouldn't really put too much stock into it myself. But if people wanna use it as ship fuel or what have you, they can, I suppose.

Hey, I was wondering if you had screenshots of 18 and gamma fighting over krillin in the background of dragon ball super hero. That was one of the most entertaining parts of the movie for me.

About the best I can do for you until we get an official release.

I keep hearing people try to justify Goku's supposed "bad parenting" with this ridiculous argument that "He's a Saiyan, we can't compare him to our standards". For one, his race literally has nothing to do with his capacity as a family man. He was not raised on Vegeta. Their lack of emotional intimacy towards their mates and offspring is a LEARNED behavior, not instinctual. We've seen throughout Z/Super that he's an attentive father/husband. I never hear this "argument" applied to Vegeta.

Oh no, I see that all the time for Vegeta, tbh. It's what they use to excuse his earlier behavior toward Trunks and Bulma, that Saiyans just totally never cared for their children or mates at all, Saiyans staying together after mating isn't their custom, etc. despite there never really being evidence or statements to the contrary. That's also why they feel they can put Goku on blast because Goku allegedly DID have a parenting role model (nevermind Gohan died when he was very young and Roshi's not exactly a good example of a dad) and thus he doesn't have Vegeta's excuse, "especially since Vegeta grew beyond it to become an objectively better parent". The flipside of using this "excuse" for Goku, however, is that they do it to leave him open to the same criticism. "If Vegeta can do it, why can't Goku? Because of his obsession!" The irony is that Vegeta is also obsessed and Bulma REGULARLY complains about him taking off for weeks at a time or longer to train, but THAT is somehow never held against "Perfect Dad & Husbando Vegeta".

Anonymous asked:

So, the random jabs at Krillin (like the "all the strongest warriors... and Krillin" line) aren't in the Japanese version of the movie, I'm guessing? That felt very Funimation

Nah, that's in the Japanese version too.

It's just Bulma teasing him is all, not some definitive statement on his "usefulness" or what have you.

Anonymous asked:

What are your opinions about Cell Max? Do you believe he should've had a personality similar to his template's or do you think he served well enough on his own as a rampaging, near-mindless monster?

I think that just having him randomly be the same Cell despite changes and alterations would have been rather weird and kind of boring. We've already had that Cell, he's come and gone. And seeing a "new" Cell just randomly think and behave the same as the old Cell wouldn't make too much sense. He was made for a different purpose, his design, form, etc. were different, his genetic makeup is even a bit different now. Seeing the gang get to take on what was essentially a Kaiju is something we really haven't seen since Goku's first Oozaru rampage in the first DB arc (or arguably Gohan in Tree of Might, or the brief Goku rampage in GT, I suppose) so it was actually a concept that was pretty fresh for the series as a whole, as well as a nice Ultraman callback, considering how the Gammas were so clearly heavily influenced by that series. (and other classic tokusatsu series as well!)

I enjoyed Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero but if there's one part that bugged the hell out of me, it was when Vegeta was explaining to Goku the importance of mental training, and Whis appeared out of nowhere to sort of confirm (read: stroke Vegeta's ego) and admonish Goku for just "building muscle". Like, WTF??? Did we forget the entire conversation Goku had on Kami's Lookout during the Cell Saga??? Leave the Vegeta-wank in the manga.

Well that's where small changes in the dub may have made things look a tad worse than it was. In the Japanese version, Goku actually does agree with Whis' point that mental training is important, and Vegeta is chided for also taking as long as he did in both versions. But in the JP dub, Goku is both visibly and AUDIBLY frustrated and both not being able to spar with Broly because he still lacks self-control, and with Vegeta being unwilling to spar as well. That frustration is part of why he pressed Vegeta, and the heavy sigh and agreement later seems to hammer home that it's more Goku being a bit pouty that no one can or will spar with him than anything else. FWIW, Goku also picks up on this technique and adapts to it rather quickly once he actually gets in combat, so there's that to consider as well.

I like that Videl is working at a Dojo teaching Material Art's, she was always a doer, so glad she isn't a stay at home Mom. Videl for the early 90s was pretty progressive and refreshing in Shonen.

I always saw her as a cop tbh.

OG Dragon Ball started to air 25 year ago in my Countrie, i feel so freaking old now💀💀 i was 7 and there was a magazine series and u could got little action figures of Tien, Goku, Oolong, Yamcha/u, King Piccolo the RR Army that was the first time i got my brother buying Merch for the show. I took my Son to watch the Movie, he is now the age as i was watching Dragon Ball, he really liked that Piccolo has a phone, he likes that gohan is studying bugs, he really liked Geros Son and that Vegta won.

I kinda figured (and really hoped) that once Pan was no longer an infant she'd get back out there and teach. Especially given she's Mr. Satan's daughter and was "trained" by him, The line for classes taught by her would be a mile long. lol Was glad to see that happened. Though granted, I'd originally envisioned her being the one to teach Pan.

I always saw Piccolo and Gohan as brothers, the Dad Meme got huge because the US has the weird dead beat dad culture and 4chan/reddit meme community, and try to Americanize everything from foreign media. The Dub and Team 4 Star didn't help either.

Oh, I do wish it was limited to the U.S. One thing I did notice is that it became increasingly popular around the late-2000s/early 2010s to sort of try to stack and compare characters and how "good" they are by comparing how much trauma they supposedly received (unless you think they were meant to be comic relief characters I guess, then that trauma was "comedy, actually") and it became this sort of race between Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Gohan at that point to decide who'd been through more, and since the Gohan camp really wanted some extra points on the trauma scale, they decided to toss in "deadbeat dad Goku" and "abusive mom Chi-Chi". No joke. It was especially popular in YouTube comment sections and on forums back then. Wondering how much of THAT has contributed to this as well.

Chestnut Fest 2022: For A Friend

Hello again, friends! It’s that magical time of year again, and much like Shenron, I have been summoned from my slumber to grant your wishes for new story content once again.

The theme for this story? Comfort Food. Wasn’t sure how I could translate that into a written work, but I think I found a way. This entry is set before Krillin and 18 are a couple, while their friendship is still budding. It’s more platonic than shippy, but I think it’s important to explore the planting of the seeds too! So without further ado, here we go! LINKS: FF.net AO3

I MADE IT IN RIGHT UNDER THE DEADLINE!

Dragon Box Vol. 7 book has some interesting pages I had to scan lol

‘Reverse Gold-digger’ hah

‘Vegeta is still the same obstinate, hard-bitten man as ever.  A classy Bulma still retains a shadow of her looks from her younger days’ who wrote this stuff lol

Who decided to rank each couple on flirt/romance/etc. this is so silly!

@dragon-ball-meta what do you think?

On the one hand, props to them for finally recognizing Krillin has style too. On the other. the arbitrary ratings for all of them are a bit... eh. lol EDIT: Wait why does this say Pan has Videl’s eyes?

Regarding Krillin’s PTSD

Yes, I’m still on this, because people keep insisting that he doesn’t have it, and if he’d had it, it would have shown up “long before Super”. I disagree that it never really showed until then but regardless, that’s not always the case, as is evidenced by Mayo Clinic’s definition of what PTSD is.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/post-traumatic-stress-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20355967

Frankly, this is quite evident in him and his characterization, but just to drive it home, let’s take a look at some of the symptoms here and compare it to his behavior in the series, hmm?

This one’s pretty obvious, imo. We’ve seen Krillin have flashbacks. We’ve seen him remember things unbidden. We’ve also seen him physically and emotionally react to triggers of these memories, such as when he froze up and his mind blanked out upon seeing Freeza and his army again, or when he freaked out and tried to hide seeing old enemies in the forest of terror again despite being far stronger now than many of them should have been. Visceral, visible reactions.

Now, let’s move on a bit:

This one we also see in the same scene above, as well as throughout the series. Krillin’s initial avoidance of Cell Max, for example, or when he froze up initially during the battle with Freeza’s army. But even back in the original Dragon Ball, when he encountered two of the monks who used to bully him back at Orin Temple, he instantly wanted to leave. He became quiet, more reserved and timid, and wanted to quit and get out of there. Instantly. This is a thing he’s struggled with, to varying degrees, his whole life, and later trauma has only served to amplify it. It’s something he’ll likely have to face for a long time to come as well.

This set he has two aspects in particular: Negative thoughts about himself and lack of interest in activities he once enjoyed. Krillin loved being a martial artist and prided himself in honing his skills. As time went on, however, we see that interest start to fade, starting in the Buu arc and coming to a head in Super. He simply loses his drive for it. Slowly fizzles out in him. As for negative thoughts about himself... well, he is an abuse survivor. He’s had those drilled into his head since he was a child. This is a trend that continues on into adulthood, down to him feeling he’s not strong or skilled enough to even beat opponents he realistically would have no trouble beating. It’s also quite possible these may come into play in explaining 18′s growing frustrations with Krillin’s state of mind and behavior later.

The final category here is actually quite interesting, as I feel that it very much applies. Krillin is very easily startled and frightened, and overwhelming guilt and shame are things he’s felt since at least the Saiyan arc, and we see that continued into Super. But I also can’t help but wonder if him becoming careless in his job, taking more risks and not paying attention would be classed as just as trouble concentrating, or possibly even self-destructive behavior, at least at a subconscious level? I mean, he was behaving more recklessly, kept his defenses down and let himself actually get shot as a result. But I’m not a psychologist so that’s not really my purview. We do know however that he experiences several of these symptoms as well. In short, I think there really is, medically speaking, a lot more evidence that Krillin is indeed living with PTSD than there is against the idea. Just felt I needed to get this out there.
