Catching Trains: A Submas Story

The world is not always changed by those who set out to make a name, to move mountains. Sometimes the world is touched by the ones simply fulfilling their perceived duties, taking care of the people around them in a way only they know how. It is changed by caring for one and other, by seeing journeys through to the end together, by helping others become their best selves.

Sometimes the world is changed through the kindness of a conductor ensuring safe passage for all under his care.

OR

This is the story of how one man's return home turned the world on its head and brought the past back to life.

Updates Weekly on Saturday or Sunday.

Can be tracked or find small fun brainstorming on Tumblr via the shortened ‘Catching Trains Fic’ tag. Be warned, it's a slow build!

i finally got around to getting the firefox youtube dislikes extension and i think this enhances my experience immensely

i did not expect this to get notes. anyways heres the links to Return YouTube Dislike: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/return-youtube-dislikes/ and https://returnyoutubedislike.com/

and also heres the link to YouTube Enhancer (has really cool features like filters and the rewatch statistics bar): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/enhancer-for-youtube/

you may have to play around with the settings to get a result that you want, but go nuts, have fun, go watch your favorite youtube videos

Hmmm. I’m gonna switch to firefox i think

SponsorBlock is also absolutely magical, it will automatically skip everything from sponsored ad reads to subscription reminders to the non-music parts of music videos.

I really love youtube redux! its compatible with return youtube dislike and turns a lot of youtubes appearance and behavior back to older versions!

whenever i think about playing stardew valley i realize i don't really want to play stardew valley, what i WANT to play is harvest moon another wonderful life lesbian edition but that doesn't exist

ahem

Pokemon headcanon that once Absol are studied and people realize they prevent disasters instead of causing them, particularly dangerous workplaces get themselves a workplace Absol and it also decreases accidents.

Construction sites and fishing ships and factories will have one that pretty much just lazes about until it just gets up howling one day and knocks a dude down. They almost never figure out what would have happened but they're always like "yes absol thank you absol I am so grateful to be on the floor right now. Can I offer you a treat in this trying time"

i love cishet dudes who are super casual lgbt allies. like my roommate tries super hard to prove she’s a good ally and still fucks up my pronouns but then her cousin waltzes in like “hey so she said that you were a girl but youre a dude now. that’s pretty tight bro.” and then did not fuck up my pronouns once despite bein shitfaced

told him i was bi and he was like “dude… ive got a friend who’s a Homosexual and his last bf was toxic as fuhk. i can send him your way. i think he needs to get laid”

like i truly appreciate the spirit behind it

watching a video about this cargo ship that blew up in texas in the 40’s and it’s like . i know that with a lot of incidents especially older ones like this the reason that the safety standards were so shitty was because they literally did not know that these kinds of disasters COULD happen (and in many cases these disasters are what MADE the safety standards better) but sometimes you just learn about this shit and you think. how could all these people be so stupid

- cargo of the ship consisted of twine (flammable) peanuts (flammable, oily) and cotton (FLAMMABLE) from houston and POST WAR AMMUNITION (OH MY GOD) FROM CUBA

- additional cargo they were picking up in texas city was LOOSE BAGS OF AMMONIUM NITRATE that the dock workers described as being ANOMALOUSLY WARM UPON BEING LOADED INTO THE SHIP ??????

- small fire breaks out in cargo hold, instead of putting it out with water that could damage the cargo the captain decides to close all the hatches to try to make the cargo hold airtight and smother the fire (stupid but you can kind of understand how they got there)

- the heat of the trapped smoke in the cargo hold instead causes the aforementioned LOOSE BAGS OF AMMONIUM NITRATE to undergo a chemical reaction and turn into nitrous oxide, massively increasing the pressure inside of the airtight hold

- one of the hatch covers fails

- mfw all the pressure in the cargo hold is released at once causing an explosion that fucking levels everything in the port within 2000 feet

- mfw the shockwave shatters windows up to a hundred miles away

- mfw on-fire twine and peanuts and fucking grenades are raining down over texas city

- mfw some of the pieces of the ship got launched into the sky faster than the speed of sound

- mfw they found the ship’s anchor inside of a ten foot wide crater over a mile and a half away

- mfw this was one of the largest and most devastating non-nuclear explosions in world history

- mfw this could have been avoided if they’d just taken the L and put the fire out with water

also worth a mention: the SECOND boat that exploded in a very similar manner the next day which was an even more violent explosion, but less devastating because most of the port was. you know. already leveled and evacuated

someone running rescue and recovery after the FIRST boat exploded noticed that the second boat's cargo was on fire and reported it....and this just went. ignored. for several hours. until someone was like "oh shit better get this under control" and tried to move the boat to no avail and they just gave up and evacuated

next day it started raining glowing-hot metal boat chunks all over the city. AGAIN.

Today's problematic ships are the Grandcamp (first explosion) and High Flyer (second explosion).

Imagine you're a random Texan in this city and you're some distance away from all this and you're out gardening all morning and so you've got absolutely no context whatsoever and you suddenly hear this massive bang and then not too long later it starts raining burning peanuts and you're like

WHAT.

bits of burning twine start floating down from the sky to join them

and then a grenade.

and you're just

WHAT.

next day there's another bang and pieces of glowing metal start falling and you're just, okay, War of the Worlds is clearly no longer fiction, but . . . why peanuts?

another car opinion is that they shouldn't have touch screens

if you need to do something with your car (ex: adjust the AC) you should be able to do it based off of touch and minimal sight; without knobs and buttons for tactile orientation youre ... staring at an ipad while driving? awesome trend we've started

what the fuck happened

This was peak driver ergonomics. 3 Knobs for HVAC. How hot, How Hard, and where do you want it? RAdio is just below windshield level. Headlight switch is big and easily reached by feel alone. Buttons are large, and each one textured differently. You could operate everything without taking your eyes off the road.

Touch buttons on anything are a plague on humanity. There's no advantage, it's just tech bros fellating themselves. It just makes it way easier to press a button by accident.

I love memetic communication when it gets to the point of being incomprehensible because can you imagine showing someone this picture

And asking them what Greek god it represents

I’ve never really had the opportunity to watch the process of a meme being born, growing up, converging with other memes, acquiring random facts during puberty like a really bad breakout, and slowly becoming an ubermeme on my tumblr roll and I’d like to thank everyone on this hellsite for the fact I perfectly understood this and worse, am not even horrified by that deeply unsettling fact.

Some people go to Hell and spend all their time trying to get out to somewhere sane.

We settle in and decorate.

[Image description: Text that reads “But to dig deeper, Olson and her team focused on more than 300 children who had undergone a social transition.

About two-thirds were transgender boys, meaning boys who had been assigned a female gender at birth; about one-third were transgender girls.

Solely on the social transition front, Olson noted that over five years only about 7% of the children transitioned back at least once.

By the end of the study period, 94% of the kids continued to identify as the gender they had embraced when first socially transitioning. (That figure includes the just over 1% who had at one point re-transitioned back to their birth gender, before then returning back again to the gender to which they had initially transitioned.)

Of the 6% who did not stick with their initial transition, a little more than 3% described themselves as non-binary by the end of the study period, while just under 3% said they identified with their birth gender. (Identifying with one’s birth gender was notably more common among kids who had socially transitioned before the age of 6.) “Interestingly, we are (italics) not (end italics) finding that the youth who re-transitioned in our study are experiencing that as traumatic,” Olson noted. “We’ve been finding that when youth are in supportive environments — supportive in the sense of being OK with the exploration of gender — both the initial transition and a later re-transition are fine.”

Indeed, “socially transitioning youth are [simply] making the same ‘decisions’ that cisgender children are making, in that they are seeking clothes, hairstyles, names, accessories, activities and playmates that reflect their gender identity and the resources in their community,” said Matt Goldenberg, a psychologist in adolescent medicine with the Seattle Children’s Gender Clinic.” End description]

Yesterday a fellow vendor shared with me the secret of Who Has All The Money in the spirituality scene, and it's the New Age Yoga Bitches.

Guess that solves the mystery of why metaphysical shops always stock things wildly appropriated from Buddhism and Hinduism.

Avatar

However, I can't say I've noticed this as much with metaphysical shops started by millennials.

Avatar

I wonder if this has to do with the internet existing.

Being a white person raised in liberal white neighborhoods, I didn't know what BIPOC were saying about anything, let alone appropriation, until social media was invented.

If I were to open up a metaphysical store and didn't have access to that conversation, I'd end up stocking appropriated New Age things just like everyone else, being none the wiser.

...This is why Rune Yoga exists, isn't it.

That was explained beautifully

Welcome to JTV Pokecenter! Please ensure your pokemon are in a carrier, on a leash, or in their pokeballs at all times. Thank you!

Your friendly neighbourhood veterinary clinic is probably the closest thing in real life to a pokemon center, eh? So here are some pics of a few of my patients re-imagined as pokemon. I’ve been meaning to do a mashup like this for a while, but now seems a particularly relevant time.

(And if you ever visit our little clinic with your real life critters, I’ll check out your pokemon as well for free! ;) )

It took me two weeks to do this because I've been busy with commissions. I will probably continue to make Tarot cards with the other characters, but these were the first!
