the answer to elitism is not anti-intellectualism. it is to stop defining art and literature the way white colonial supremacy does. like. ?

It's also to stop writing everything at a literacy level that most people don't have. Also Elitism and anti intellectualism are problems outside of humanities, you find them in every scientific fields, so communicating information in a clear and simple way is crucial.

0/10 missed the point of the op and brought up a non sequitur that is frankly patronising to ‘most people’

to the person above op, let's try to go over these concepts again. pretty much every field and every different human activity will spawn language that signifies an in-group & out-group.

the average baseball commentator and spectator share specific lingo about the game. knitters at large are not being exclusionary gatekeepers when you don't know what a "dropped stitch" is.

especially wrt to science it is important for people in the field to say exactly what they mean. to do so requires specific context & jargon.

the average scientist in a lab is not writing papers for the average person, it's for their colleagues in the field. some of those colleague work as public educators who spread this information to non-experts at different levels of competence. an undergraduate engineering student won't receive the exact information in the exact same language that second-grade students will, on the exact same topic. and guess what? that's just appropriate to either group's level of competence with the material!

the same applies to the humanities! you will not teach eight-grade students about hermeneutics, you will go over the structure & elements of a short story. why? not because hermeneutics is a frivolous field of intellectual elites showing off to each other, but because at their level of competence, eight-grade students don't need to interpret at the level of those scholars.

is it now so hard to see that you can build your way up towards different levels of expertise? is it stupid to ignore the fact that now more than ever you can work up to this through the vast amount of free resources on the internet? you tell me

it's not the job of writers & artists performing at a high level to write "at a literacy level most people don't have" because they are writing for the people who are their intellectual colleagues. and with some effort you too can reach that level. it's fine if you don't want to, but it doesn't mean that their work is snooty or frivolous, just because you cannot appreciate it as a layman. it's fine if you don't want to put in the effort! but there's no need to cry elitism when you are frankly choosing intellectual laziness in the face of higher competency than yours

my friend who works in theatre just pointed out to me that WICKED is still showing tonight and the first line of that musical is "GOOD NEWS! SHE'S DEAD!" i really don't know how they're gonna work around that one

Hahaha. I don't understand what you're saying. Come on, let's go implement the Must Haves for this next development sprint

You guys are being funny today, haha. Let's have lunch and we can go over the software architecture one more time.

Did you figure out the nullreference on that runtime error yet? We need that fixed before we can integrate the other components.

MAYBE PUT SOME BREAKPOINTS AND SEE HOW THE VALUE CHANGES, IT MIGHT BE THE MULTITHREADING MESSING WITH THE SHARED VARIABLES

I know they’re giving you zoomers tablets at school but how are y’all writing and saving papers if no one is saving files til college? I do know schools make you do papers still. I am old but like… you still have to write out a paper right?

@dancinbutterfly my mom teaches 7th grade and everything is done thru Google classroom or Canva. Neither one require the students to save files and everything can be "saved" once the students hit submit. It's kind of wild.

Additionally so many of her kids aren't tech savvy because everything they've ever seen online has ONLY been in an app.

So no one ever loses things? Cuz I use stuff in apps and shit gets lost all the time.

So I used to have a Russian friend who had a pretty thick accent and like a lot of Russians tended to eschew articles. She would say things like “Get in car.” And stuff.

Well one day this asshole who had been kind of tagging along with us asks her why she talks like that because it makes her sound dumb and I still remember her response word for word.

“Me? Dumb? Maybe in America you have to say get in THE car because you are so stupid that people might just get in random car, but in Russia we don’t need to say that. We just fucking know because we are not stupid.”

One time I was proof reading a paper for a Russian student. As I was correcting her paper with her, the many mistakes in her grammar started weighing on her. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, almost sobbing,

“In Russian I am so intelligent and clear. In English I am like [an] idiot”

Respect to anyone trying to master a foreign language. I get so sad thinking about that student.

Full offense but people who make fun of someone else’s accent or belittle their limited vocabulary when they’re speaking a language not native to them are fucking disgusting and are just begging to be punched.

They’re speaking your language because you don’t know theirs. That’s not something they should be made fun of, it’s something that should be commended because learning a language is hard fucking work.

I hate people who do this so much.

I’ve been the person trying to sound intelligent in the other language. It’s even harder than that.

Anonymous asked:

What does "dead dove don't eat" mean? I'd Google it but I'm afraid of getting graphic images of deceased birds in the results.

It’s a meme from an old episode of Arrested Development. You’ve seen it here on tumblr, but not always with the original context.

The character sees a paper bag in the fridge labelled “Dead Dove Do Not Eat.” He takes the bag out of the fridge, opens it up, makes a disgusted face, and then the famous “I don’t know what I expected.”

There really was a dead dove in the bag.

When you see a fic tagged with “dead dove do not eat” it basically means, “this fic is clearly labelled (tagged) indicating content that some people will not want to read. If you read it anyway, it’s your own fault. I warned you.”

It can also be interpreted as “See those tags and warnings? I’m not joking around. Pay attention to them.”

Avatar

The way I understand it then, it’s basically just a more amusing way of saying “don’t like don’t read”?

Avatar

I would say it’s best understood as an intensifier  to Don’t Like Don’t Read.

Just for example, say a series has some implied cannibalism in it.

A given fic for this series might tag with “cannibalism warning” just because it’s in the canon and the fic acknowledges or discusses  it. Some people might be okay with discussing it in the abstract, even if they don’t want to see it represented explicitly.  Others might be uncomfortable with just the concept, and the author might add “don’t like don’t read” to remind those people that they may not want to engage with the fic at all.

But if you see both “cannibalism” and “dead dove do not eat” the author is telling you that in the course of this fic, a character is going to straight up chow down on some dead bodies, onscreen.

Avatar

To refine on that “intensifier” concept slightly, I interpret “dead dove: do not eat” as an intensity modifier. The presence of a tag itself doesn’t necessarily tell me exactly how that content is going to be handled (which is not to say it’s not useful, just that it’s incomplete information). “Dead dove: do not eat” suggests to me that it’s going to on the darker, more serious end of the spectrum, and I shouldn’t read it if I’m not prepared for what may be a psychologically intense or harrowing treatment of the tagged material.

Avatar

You know what! This conversation has gotten me thinking about the concept of “intensity modifiers” all this morning, and I think it’s actually a fascinating subject we should talk more about!

Because I started off by thinking “DDDNE serves as an indication of subject intensity, which is an important purpose and it’s a shame that we don’t have other things like that” but then I realized, we do! They’re just slightly less formalized than other kinds of tagging systems modern fandom tends to work with.

Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of intensity scales in common use in modern fandom.

The first is the violence/sex intensity scale, which tends overall to be conflated with or used as a shorthand for the intensity/maturity rating of the fic itself. And people have talked in detail about the difference between an M and an E rating, in terms of how explicitly the sex act or violence act is described.

But sex and violence are not the only topics that warrant an intensity scale. There are plenty of topics that people (myself included) are okay with when talking about in an abstract or general way, but if the narrative starts to dig down into the real nitty gritty of the topic I might only want to read it if I’m in the right headspace, or not at all.

And though there isn’t an official G to E scale, fandom has implicitly recognized this need and filled it with canonical tags – such as Implied/Referenced X, Canon-Typical X, or Dead Dove Do Not Eat.

1. Implied/Referenced X tells the reader that topic X is going to be discussed, but not shown explicitly on-screen. Unless the whole broad topic is a trigger for a reader, it’s probably okay for them to read.

2. Next step up from that is Canon-Typical X, which can generally be understood as the base or standard level of intensity for topic X in fandom Y. Exactly what level of intensity that is varies from fandom to fandom – ‘canon-typical violence’ for The Avengers is probably going to be a different level of intensity than ‘canon-typical violence’ for The Witcher, just to name two offhand. But it is generally understood that if you’re reading fic for fandom Y in the first place, the level of X present in the work is probably not going to be too much for you.

3. And then at the far end of the intensity modifier scale is Dead Dove Do Not Eat, where a topic is explored in such  detail and intensity that even fans of Fandom Y will have to decide whether they’re okay to read this today, or maybe at all.

see this is the kind of quality content that keeps me coming around here on tumbler dot com.

Love me some good fandom midrash

This sounds like a shitpost but people should be allowed to be horny. As in, sexuality is just part of life for most people and there’s no reason for consensual sexual behavior to be punished. A celebrity getting “caught” at a sex club shouldn’t be a scandal. No one should be fired for having a fetlife profile outside of work. Nudes getting leaked shouldn’t be career-ending. Denying and hiding (consensual) sexual interests doesn’t make anyone more professional, it just makes everyone more repressed. And sterilizing ourselves to be better work drones isn’t productive, it’s just creepy. I’d rather my surgeon get absolutely railed on camera and come to work in a good mood, frankly.

Johnson’s comments are the most batshit crazy yet.  Could he be suffering from brain damage?  Seriously just read this statement he made on Sept. 11th:

“ On Sunday Johnson suggested to Levin that liberals, Democrats, and anyone on “the left” as he put it, do not have an inherent right to participate in American life on an equal footing as Republicans.”

RON JOHNSON MUST BE DEFEATED & NEVER HOLD GOVERNMENT OFFICE EVER AGAIN.

As of Monday FiveThirtyEight puts the Johnson vote ahead of Barnes by 0.2 percentage points.

That’s nothing. If you are in Wisconsin or know people in Wisconsin, get out and vote. That’s only a few thousand votes.

I tell you this as a Georgia voter. Senate seats can flip and it just takes a few more people to give a shit. I promise.

Thinking about Payu riding Rain, calling him a good boy, scolding him when he comes too fast and saying they’ll just have to go another round—or as many as it takes—until Rain learns to control himself 😵‍💫

Hang on. Rain is the top? 😂 LOVE when a bl subverts my casting expectations. A+ no notes

Victor: Did you know Batman had contingency plans for every hero in the world?

Dick: …Yeah, I helped with some and have my own.

Teen Titans: WHAT!?

-

Roy: I can’t believe both Bruce and Dick have contingency plans for us heroes, talk about mistrust, right Jay.

Jason: …

Outlaws: YOU DICK!

-

Bart: I just heard Batman, Nightwing and Red Hood has contingency plans for all of us. Tim you gotta tell them that’s not right.

Tim: But I have the same plans and some extra if the first don’t work.

Young Justice: WHAT!?

-

Birds of Prey: I’m glad you’re not part of Batman’s inner circle Oracle, turns out they have contingency plans for all of us. How can we trust someone who doesn’t trust us.

Oracle: But you trust me.

BoP: ARE YOU KIDDING US!?

-

Jon: So you have plans I guess?

Damian: To take you all down? Of course, doesn’t everybody?

Krypto: Woof?

Selina’s cats: Mreow?

Ace: *looks at them* *licks his crotch*

Gar: (breathless at the tea ☕️) Y’all got issues.

The Bible is wrong about a lot of things, but I do think a lot of people on this website should "put away their childish things" (cartoons, video games).

Bad take. The Bible literally says
