And for some agricultural history: carrots!! Carrots were not always orange. They used to be yellow, white and purple. There are two subgroups of carrot: the Eastern/Asiatic group (var altorubens) and the western group (var sativus). The Eastern group is purple, pink or orange-yellow. It developed in the Himalayan-Hindu Kush Region and around Turkestan(1) The western group first developed at Turkey and Iran (1) The genetic structure of modern carrots imply that the Dutch "Long Orange" may be the original root type of modern carrots. This carrot is also seen in Dutch paintings at year +/- 1600-ish (2) The Holland lop is a relatively new breed, developed in 1952 (3). It is unlikely that Netherlands' pet rabbit would have lop ears this early.
