okay, but. here’s the deal. for ashiya douman, evil clown wizard extraordinaire, it wouldn’t be in character.
“but wait” you say. “doesn’t their final ascension art show them as nude, like come on, that’s a whole thing. how is that not in character for them to show up in their birthday suit” and this is where i say that assuming that one (1) single illustration of them in the nude means that they’re some ravenous sexual creature who throws off clothes any chance they get completely misses the context of douman and who they are. throughout the entire canonical storyline, douman does not get nude. not once. not ever. and neither are they overtly sexual with anyone! in fact, douman becoming summonable is the first time they suddenly act in an overtly coy and flirtatious manner and it is specifically directed 100% to the main character. they compliment others in their overly polite way, make references to others being beautiful, but the only one who gets the comments of things such as “I am fully aware that I already informed you repeatedly, but I must again tell you that my heart throbs violently.” is guda. no one else.
douman certainly is a sexual creature, but their sexuality is focused like a laser specifically on people they’re interested in. that infamous nude illustration? its supposed to be an isolated intimate (intentionally bordering on terrifying) moment that the artist in an interview stated is a “a side shown only to you”. and to further skewer the point, sei shounagon constantly tries to pull off douman’s clothes as a way to tease them with douman raising an entire fit over it (I beg you to stop. Please, stop attempting to remove my robes.) but when it comes to battle or addressing their master directly, they suddenly act coy, teasing guda with the possibility of it without actually going further (Oh dear! Master will scold me if I expose myself any further.)
male fanservice is somethin sorely needed. but ashiya douman isn’t the character who is going to turn up nude just because. they’re a deeply traditional character whose sexuality comes in the form of sensuality and obvious provocation in the form of teasing and coy words. the summer yukata with its final ascension exposing just a little more of their chest and the form of it emphasizing both their feminine and masculine beauty is honestly a great summary of who they are as a character, and to simply throw that away just because people see that douman has a great body and think that they should be showing it off for fanservice would be a disservice to who they are as a whole
